Some radiocarbon dates for ancient Egypt have been significantly offset from the established historical chronology (see Bonani et al., 2001). In this paper, short-lived plant species collected in Egypt between 1700 and 1900 AD were used to investigate the possibility that the radiocarbon record had been influenced by reservoir effects. AMS radiocarbon measurements were made on 66 known-age samples, resulting in an average offset from expected values of 19 years. The implications of this minor discrepancy ...

Egypt has some of the oldest written records and extended lists of named rulers. But radiocarbon dates have only fulfilled expectations 66 per cent of the time. So why haven&t the two types of dating made a better match? The authors provide a dozen excellent reasons, which will sound the alarm among researchers well beyond Dynastic Egypt.

Objectives/Hypothesis The treatment for most advanced head and neck cancers (stage III and IV) usually includes radiation, and the most common side effect of this treatment modality is a permanent decrease in salivary production. Xerostomia is a devastating complication that significantly affects patients' quality of life by interfering with functions of taste, mastication, deglutition, and speech production. Debbie A. Lawlor, Robert W. Brock, Kenneth A. Harris, Richard F. Potter,

Purpose: Hepatic dysfunction may contribute to death from multiple organ dysfunction after abdominal aortic surgery. Several factors are likely responsible, and the purpose of this study was to determine whether the cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin 1 (IL-1) are involved in initiating this remote hepatic injury. Methods: In a normotensive rat model of 4-hour bilateral hindlimb ischemia/reperfusion (I/R), we measured systemic TNF-α and IL-1 levels throughout the I/R period. Rats ...
