This study was designed to examine working memory following fluid-percussion traumatic brain injury (TBI) using the Morris water maze (MWM). Rats were injured (n = 9) at a moderate level of central fluid percussion injury (2.1 atm) or were prepared for injury but did not receive a fluid pulse (sham injury) (n = 10). On days 11–15 postinjury, working memory was assessed using the MWM. Each animal received 8 pairs of trials per day. For each pair of trials, animals were randomly assigned to one of four possible ...

An emerging literature exists in support of deficits in cholinergic neurotransmission days to weeks following experimental traumatic brain injury (TBI). In addition, novel cholinomimetic therapeutics have been demonstrated to improve cognitive outcome following TBI in rats. We examined the effects of repeated postinjury administration of a cholinesterase inhibitor, tetrahydroaminoacridine (THA), on cognitive performance following experimental TBI. Rats were either injured at a moderate level of central ...

Measurements of the optical properties of solid polystyrene in the wavelength range 1100-2300 Å are reported. The real and imaginary parts of the complex index of refraction were determined from transmission measurements on a series of thin films. The absorption spectrum shows a strong peak at 1925 Å plus minor features around 1350 and 2170 Å as well as evidence for a second major peak below 1100 Å. The measured values of the optical constants were used to calculate the complex dielectric constant ...

The state of modification of the adenosine residue (A37), found adjacent to the anticodon in tRNAs that recognize codons beginning with U, varies in Salmonella bacteria grown under different physiological conditions. In aerobically grown bacteria, these tRNAs contain ms2io6A and in bacteria grown anaerobically they contain its precursor, ms2i6A. The hydroxylation of the isopentenyl (i6-) side chain of ms2i6A does not occur in the absence of oxygen. When the bacteria are grown under iron or cysteine ...

This paper examines the relationships between British MPs and local officials and councillors for evidence of accommodation or resistance to the representational activities and styles of MPs. It is based on structured interviews in eight constituencies, including interviews with the MPs, local councillors, CEOs, and other officials. The activities of MPs in their constituencies can be categorized into four nonexclusive groupings: casework, projects, gaining visibility, and party maintenance. Each ...

Abstract Retaining human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–infected patients in medical care at regular intervals has been shown to be linked to positive health outcomes. This article examines the available literature and research on retention and engagement in care of HIV-infected patients. We identify the extent of the problem of keeping patients engaged in care, as well as analyze which groups of patients are likely to be lost to follow-up. A review of different ways to measure patient retention is ...

The chemistry of underground storage tanks containing high-level waste at the Hanford Site in Washington State is an area of continued research interest. Thermodynamic models have predicted the formation of analcime and clinoptilolite in Hanford tanks, rather than cancrinite; however, these predictions were based on carbonate−cancrinite. We report the first observation of a nitrate−cancrinite [possibly Na8(K,Cs)(AlSiO4)6(NO3)2·nH2O] extracted from a Hanford tank 241-AP-101 sample that was evaporated ...

Our article addresses the Kyoto Protocol in light of Prof. Yandle's "bootleggers and Baptists" theory of regulation, a subset of the economic theory of regulation. The theory's name is meant to evoke 19th century laws banning alcohol sales on Sundays. Baptists supported Sunday closing laws for moral and religious reasons, while bootleggers were eager to stifle their legal competition. Thus, politicians were able to pose as acting in the interests of public morality, even while taking contributions ...

Uranyl nitrate is a key species in the nuclear fuel cycle. However, this species is known to exist in different states of hydration, including the hexahydrate ([UO2(NO3)2(H2O)6] often called UNH), the trihydrate [UO2(NO3)2(H2O)3 or UNT], and in very dry environments the dihydrate form [UO2(NO3)2(H2O)2]. Their relative stabilities depend on both water vapor pressure and temperature. In the 1950s and 1960s, the different phases were studied by infrared transmission spectroscopy but were limited both by ...

Induction of anaesthesia occasionally has been associated with undesirable behaviour in dogs. High quality of induction of anaesthesia with propofol has been well described while in contrast variable induction and recovery quality has been associated with diazepam-ketamine. In this study, anaesthetic induction and recovery characteristics of diazepam-ketamine combination with propofol alone were compared in dogs undergoing elective orchidectomy. Thirty-six healthy adult male dogs were used. After ...
