Patients and families living with metabolic disorders face challenging dietary and drug treatment regimens. On the hypothesis that poor palatability, volume and frequency of drug/formula administration contribute to treatment non-adherence and hyperammonemic episodes, a survey was conducted of patient, caregiver (CG) and physician perspectives on treatments used in urea cycle disorders (UCD).A paper and online survey assessed experience with UCD medications, medical foods and dietary supplements.25 ...

The recent development of lightweight GPS collars has enabled medium-to-small sized animals to be tracked via GPS telemetry. Evaluation of the performance and accuracy of GPS collars is largely confined to devices designed for large animals for deployment in natural environments. This study aimed to assess the performance of lightweight GPS collars within a suburban environment, which may be different from natural environments in a way that is relevant to satellite signal acquisition. We assessed ...

Invasive species are often favoured in fragmented, highly-modified, human-dominated landscapes such as urban areas. Because successful invasive urban adapters can occupy habitat that is quite different from that in their original range, effective management programmes for invasive species in urban areas require an understanding of distribution, habitat and resource requirements at a local scale that is tailored to the fine-scale heterogeneity typical of urban landscapes. Abstract The conservation (protected area) status of New Zealand's indigenous grasslands has been updated to December 2007, from the previous analysis of September 2002, to contribute to a global assessment and conservation initiative for the world's temperate grasslands. Only in the South Island rangeland geographic area has there been a substantial increase in the formally protected area of indigenous grasslands. To evaluate the effects of streptozocin on maternal pancreatic β-cell function, we administered the agent to 14 pregnant ewes at 85 to 90 days' gestation on two occasions, 4 days apart. Intravenous glucose tolerance tests were performed before the initial administration, before the second dose, and 4 weeks after the final dose of streptozocin. There was a significant elevation in maternal fasting blood glucose (82 ± 8.1 mg/dl before streptozocin and 102.6 ± 6.8 mg/dl after streptozocin, p < 0.05). Five ...

Equus caballus papillomavirus type-2 (EcPV-2) has been proposed as a causal factor in equine genital squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This study had 2 objectives: first, calculate the frequency of papillomavirus (PV) and EcPV-2 infection in papillomas, carcinomas in situ (CIS), and SCCs in Western Canadian horses; and second, determine if EcPV-2 status of equine SCCs is associated with overall survival (OS). EcPV-2 status of 115 archived tissue samples, spanning 6 years, was determined using broad spectrum ( ...

Various instruments have been developed to measure aligning prism, the prism that eliminates a fixation disparity (associated heterophoria). This includes the established Mallett near vision unit and recently developed Thomson Vision Toolbox on the iPad. With no previous research investigating the agreement between these instruments, practitioners may question if they can be used interchangeably. 80 participants underwent near vision testing with the Mallett unit and iPad fixation disparity test. ...
