The prairie region of Canada and the United States is characterized by millions of small depressions of glacial origin called prairie potholes. The transfer of surface runoff in this landscape is mainly through a "fill and spill" mechanism among neighboring potholes. While non-contributing areas, that is small internally drained basins, are common on this landscape, during wet periods these areas can become hydrologically connected to larger regional drainage systems. Accurate prediction of prairie ...

Studies using stable isotopically labeled glucose and palmitate as precursors of pulmonary surfactant synthesis have demonstrated slow surfactant turnover in premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). However, only limited data about surfactant turnover are available for term infants. Because acetate is a direct precursor of de novo synthesized surfactant fatty acid, we measured [1-13C1]acetate incorporation into surfactant of term infants without respiratory dysfunction (control group), ...

We describe a new transcutaneous electrical resistance method for measuring surgical wound healing which permits repeated measurements in vivo throughout the healing period. A saline-filled silver electrode was used to monitor the increasing ohmic resistance which accompanied the healing. Two validation studies were carried out. In the first study, histology on 16 rats showed that an intact stratum corneum was responsible for the high electrical resistance of skin, since lesions of the corneum markedly ...

As shown by Gañán-Calvo (1998 Phys. Rev. Lett. 80 285–8), a free liquid jet can be compressed in diameter through gas dynamic forces exerted by a coaxially co-flowing gas, obviating the need for a solid nozzle to form a microscopic liquid jet and thereby alleviating the clogging problems that plague conventional droplet sources of small diameter. We describe in this paper a novel form of droplet beam source based on this principle. The source is miniature, robust, dependable, easily fabricated, essentially ...

Broadening our knowledge of olfactory communication in strictly monogamous systems can inform our understanding of how chemosignals may facilitate social and reproductive behavior between the sexes. Compared to other social and mating systems, relatively little is known about olfactory communication in strictly monogamous non-human primates. Furthermore, platyrrhines are not well represented in chemical analyses of glandular secretions. We conducted semi-quantitative headspace gas chromatography ...

Abstract: It is becoming increasingly evident that aberrantly expressed microRNAs (miRNAs) are responsible for a number of disease processes, including cancer initiation and progression. miRNAs have been implicated as key players in numerous neoplasms, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Functionally, deregulation of miRNAs that act either as tumour suppressors or oncogenes results in numerous cancer-associated phenomena, including changes in proliferation, migration, and cell survival. Furthermore, ...

Tara Spence, Jeff Bruce, Kenneth W. Yip, Fei‐Fei Liu,
Head and neck cancers (HNCs) are a highly heterogeneous group of tumours that are associated with diverse clinical outcomes. Recent evidence has demonstrated that human papillomavirus (HPV) is involved in up to 25% of HNCs; particularly in the oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC) subtype where it can account for up to 60% of such cases. HPVs are double-stranded DNA viruses that infect epithelial cells; numerous HPV subtypes, including 16, 18, 31, 33, and 35, drive epithelial cell transformation and tumourigenesis. ...
