The Sentinel-3 Mission Performance Centre (S3MPC) is tasked by the European Space Agency (ESA) to monitor the health of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites and ensure a high data quality to the users. This paper deals exclusively with the effort devoted to the altimeter and microwave radiometer, both components of the Surface Topography Mission (STM). The altimeters on Sentinel-3A and -3B are the first to operate in delay-Doppler or SAR mode over all Earth surfaces, which enables better spatial resolution ...

Copernicus is the European Union's Earth Observation and Monitoring programme, delivering free access to operational and historical environmental data to support applications in a wide range of societal benefit areas. To allow meaningful long-term environmental monitoring and robust decision-making, it is essential to ensure that satellite-retrieved products are of high quality and consistency. This paper describes the outputs of an international workshop on the radiometric calibration validation ...

As part of the Sentinel-2 mission, a Radiometric Uncertainty Tool (RUT) has been recently released to the community. This tool estimates the Sentinel-2 radiometric uncertainty associated with each pixel in the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance factor images provided by the European Space Agency (ESA). The use of such information enables users to assess the "fitness for purpose" of the data to their specific application. The work described here summarises the efforts and results of integrating the ...

Multiple endogenous mechanisms that regulate immune and inflammatory processes contribute to the maintenance of peripheral tolerance and prevent chronic inflammation in mammals. Yet pathogens and tumours are able to exploit these homeostatic pathways to foster immunosuppressive microenvironments and evade immune surveillance. The release of adenosine in the extracellular space contributes to these phenomena by exerting a broad range of immunomodulatory effects. Here we document the influence of ...

Cladribine (2-chloro-2'-deoxyadenosine) is a purine nucleoside analogue (PNA) which causes targeted and sustained reduction of peripheral lymphocyte counts. Cladribine tablets produced significant treatment benefit for patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis in the phase 3 CLARITY study. In addition to the well-characterised cell-specific phosphorylation of PNAs responsible for lymphocyte reduction, the mode of action of cladribine may encompass distinct activities contributing to its ...

The Radiation Transfer Model Intercomparison (RAMI) initiative benchmarks canopy reflectance models under well‐controlled experimental conditions. Launched for the first time in 1999, this triennial community exercise encourages the systematic evaluation of canopy reflectance models on a voluntary basis. The first phase of RAMI focused on documenting the spread among radiative transfer (RT) simulations over a small set of primarily 1‐D canopies. The second phase expanded the scope to include structurally ...

The determination of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) from nadir scanning multi-spectral radiometers, like SeaWiFS, MERIS or MODIS, requires the separation of spectral atmospheric and surface properties. Since SeaWiFS and MERIS do not provide information at 2.1 μm, like MODIS, the estimation of the surface reflectance cannot be made by the cross correlation approach described by Kaufman et al., 1997. The BAER approach (Bremen AErosol Retrieval), von Hoyningen-Huene et al., 2003, uses a linear mixing ...

Abstract The secretion of IL-2 is a critical and early landmark in the activation program of CD4+ T cells in vitro, but the lack of sensitive assays has limited its application for studying T cell activation in vivo. Using a mouse cytokine capture assay we were able to detect the rapid secretion of IL-2 after an in vivo stimulus by 1–2 h in naive T cells and as early as 30 min in memory T cells. Maximal secretion was achieved within 1–2 h for memory cells or 6–8 h for naive T cells. Surprisingly ...

Abstract Reports on the status of DNA methylation of the IFN-γ gene during T cell development in human and mouse have presented somewhat contradictory results. In this study we demonstrate in the mouse that methylation of the IFN-γ promoter inhibits its transcriptional activity, and define a small hypomethylated region in T cells that correlates with transcription. The IFN-γ promoter was also hypomethylated in NK cells, but not in B cells or nonhemopoietic tissues. Surprisingly, unlike the promoters ...

The anti-atherosclerotic properties of F 12511, a novel acyl-coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) inhibitor, were studied in rabbits that were fed a cholesterol-free casein-rich diet and developed endogenous hypercholesterolemia and fibrofatty preatheroma lesions. After 6 weeks of casein feeding, an endothelial abrasion was performed in the abdominal aorta; at week 8, a control group was maintained on this diet while F 12511 (8 mg/kg/d) was administered as a diet admixture for the subsequent ...
