Recent studies have found bacterial DNA in the blood of healthy individuals. To date, most studies on the blood microbiome have focused on human health, but this topic is an expanding research area in animal health as well. This study aims to characterize the blood microbiome of both healthy dogs and those with chronic gastro-enteropathies. For this study, blood and fecal samples were collected from 18 healthy and 19 sick subjects, DNA was extracted through commercial kits, and the V3-V4 regions ...

The temporal response properties of the human visual system to low and high spatial frequency gratings was investigated by two contrast detection threshold techniques. With the first technique the contrast threshold for detecting vertical sinusoidal gratings at spatial frequencies of 0.5, 2.8 and 16.0 c/deg was determined at exposure durations ranging from 20 to 400 msec. It was found that the critical duration, at and below which reciprocity between contrast and a nonunity power of duration holds, ...

The objective of this study was to determine the long-term clinical and radiologic outcomes of patients with osteonecrosis treated by a combination of intertrochanteric osteotomy and pedicled iliac bone block transfer. Between 1978 and 1986, 41 patients (52 hips) with a mean age of 33 years were operated on for Ficat Stages II and III disease. Thirty-three patients (44 hips) were assessed clinically and radiologically at a mean followup of 13.5 years (range, 5–20 years). Fifteen hips (15 of 44; 34%; ...

Background. The mechanism of avascular osteonecrosis (AVN) is controversial. Besides an increased bone marrow pressure with reduced blood supply, an enhanced coagulation has been considered. We hypothesize that a genetic variant of the plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) determines the risk of AVN in glucocorticoid-treated patients. Methods. Genotyping for the 4G/5G PAI-1 polymorphism was performed in 228 glucocorticoid-treated renal transplant patients. AVN of the hip was present in 26 patients. ...

Iron overload (IO) is a life-threatening complication of chronic hemolytic disorders such as β-thalassemia. IO results in severe cellular oxidative damage, leading to organ failure. Peroxiredoxin-2 (Prx2), a typical 2-cysteine-(Cys)-peroxiredoxin, is an important component of the cytoprotective system, but its response to IO is still to be fully defined. We studied the effects of IO on Prx2-knockout mice (Prx2-/-). The absence of Prx2 enhanced toxicity due to IO on erythropoiesis. We found that IO failed ...
