Summary The present work aimed to evaluate the immunogenicity of Leishmania amazonensis iron superoxide dismutase ( SOD )‐encoding DNA experimental vaccine and the protective properties of this DNA vaccine during infection. The SOD gene was subcloned into the pVAX 1 plasmid, and it was used to immunize BALB /c mice. Twenty‐one days after the last immunization, mice were sacrificed (immunogenicity studies) or subcutaneously challenged with L. amazonensis (studies of protection), and alterations in cellular ...

Methods for the determination of As and Pb in wines by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) are proposed. For As, 8 ml of wine were diluted with 1 ml of nitric acid in a PTFE bomb, followed by heating to 150 °C for 90 min. The transparent solution obtained was diluted to 10 ml with de-ionized water. The integrated absorbances of the solutions were measured by ETAAS using 5 µg of Pd, as a chemical modifier. For Pb, the integrated absorbances were measured after diluting the wine sample, ...

Abstract Detection of traces from pharmaceutical drugs such as antibiotics in drinking water and foodstuff is essential for guaranteeing human health in some environments, and this has to be done with low cost technologies to be widely deployed in public services and industry. In this paper, we describe an ultralow cost (<US$ 0.005 per unit of sensing layer) electrochemical sensor to detect the antibiotic tetracycline, which is made of a homogeneous thin film of potato starch (PS) and carbon black ( ...

Abstract Cognitive impairment creates significant challenges for patients, their families and friends, and clinicians who provide their health care. Early recognition allows for diagnosis and appropriate treatment, education, psychosocial support, and engagement in shared decision-making regarding life planning, health care, involvement in research, and financial matters. An IAGG-GARN consensus panel examined the importance of early recognition of impaired cognitive health. Their major conclusion was that ...

In canine leishmaniosis caused by the protozoan Leishmania infantum, little is known about how co-infections with or co-seropositivities for other pathogens can influence aggravation of this disease. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the frequency of co-infections with or co-seropositivities for certain pathogens in dogs seropositive for L. infantum and their relationship with clinical signs, histological changes and L. infantum load. Sixty-six L. infantum-seropositive dogs ...

The advantage of playing at home has been observed in different individual, dual and team sports. A greater prevalence of victory or points gained was observed when teams played at home, compared to the teams playing as visitors (>50%). The aim of this study was twofold: (1) to examine the influence of game location in elite futsal; and (2) to analyze the home advantage effect in different game contexts according to quality of opposition (balanced and unbalanced games according to team ranking difference ...

A factorial experimental design was combined with response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize the catalyzed CO2 consumption by coke deposition and syngas production during the dry reforming of CH4. The CH4/CO2 feed ratio and the reaction temperature were chosen as the variables, and the selected responses were CH4 and CO2 conversion, the H2/CO ratio, and coke deposition. The optimal reaction conditions were found to be a CH4/CO2 feed ratio of approximately 3 at 700 °C, producing a large quantity ...

Nanocrystalline nickel disulfide, NiS2, was mechanochemically prepared using ball milling procedures in inert atmosphere, starting from 34:66 Ni:S powder mixtures. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) patterns showed that 6 h of milling are enough to allow the formation of the NiS2 phase, which is accompanied by a small fraction of the hexagonal NiS phase. Rietveld analysis indicates that the average crystallite size is about 22 nm for NiS2 and 12 nm for NiS after 9 h milling. Transmission Electron Microscopy ( ...

The envisaged ubiquitous sensing and biosensing for varied applications has motivated materials development toward low cost, biocompatible platforms. In this paper, we demonstrate that carbon nanodiamonds (NDs) can be combined with potato starch (PS) and be deposited on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) in the form of a homogeneous, rough film, with electroanalytical performance tuned by varying the relative ND-PS concentration. As a proof of concept, the ND/PS film served as matrix to immobilize tyrosinase ( ...

Abstract This work reports a detailed study of the double‐resonance (DR) Raman bands of single‐layer MoS 2 as a function of temperature, using many different laser energies in the region of the excitonic transitions and at different temperatures between 80 and 300 K. Our measurements show that the DR bands are strongly affected by temperature and the results are explained in terms of the temperature dependence of both the phonon wavenumber and the excitonic energy. In order to distinguish these two ...

We present a lattice QCD determination of light quark masses with three sea-quark flavours ($N_f = 2+1$). Bare quark masses are known from PCAC relations in the framework of CLS lattice computations with a non-perturbatively improved Wilson-Clover action and a tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action. They are fully non-perturbatively improved, including the recently computed Symanzik counter-term $b_{\rm A} - b_{\rm P}$. The mass renormalisation at hadronic scales and the renormalisation group running ...

Repurposing of drugs to treat tuberculosis (TB) has been considered an alternative to overcome the global TB epidemic, especially to combat drug-resistant forms of the disease. Mefloquine has been reported as a potent drug to kill drug-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In this study, we evaluated the antifibrotic activity of SNAC in an animal model of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) induced in Sprague-Dawley rats fed with a choline-deficient, high trans fat diet and exposed to diethylnitrosamine for 8 weeks.
