This work investigates the effect of methyl jasmonte (MeJa), mechanical wounding, and herbivory caused by larval feeding of a specialist insect (Agraulis vanillae vanillae) upon trypsin inhibitory activity in passion fruit leaves. Despite the fact that all treatments caused accumulation of trypsin inhibitors (TIs), higher levels were observed in MeJa treated leaves when plants were assayed 24 and 48 h after stimulus. Concerning both mechanically injured plants and attacked ones, a systemic induction ...

Abstract Raman spectra of polymer electrolytes based on poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (PEGdME) with LiClO 4 , PEGdME/LiClO 4 , and the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, PEGdME/[bmim]PF 6 , are compared. Raman spectroscopy suggests stronger interactions in PEGdME/LiClO 4 than PEGdME/[bmim]PF 6 , thus corroborating previous results obtained by molecular dynamics simulations. Quantum Chemistry methods have been used to calculate vibrational frequencies and the equilibrium ...

Stingless bees are abundant and diverse key actors in several plant-pollinator networks in the neotropics, but little is known about their natural history and ecology. This study aims to contribute to knowledge about the diversity and dispersion of stingless bees and discusses the importance of nesting substrates. It was carried out in the Araguari river valley in Minas Gerais, Brazil, where a nest site survey was conducted in an area of 100 ha during 11 alternate months from 2006 to 2008, for a ...

The maned sloth Bradypus torquatus (Pilosa, Bradypodidae) is endemic to a small area in the Atlantic Forest of coastal Brazil. It has been listed as a threatened species because of its restricted geographic range, habitat loss and fragmentation, and declining populations. The major objectives of this study were to estimate its potential geographic distribution, the climatic conditions across its distributional range, and to identify suitable areas and potential species strongholds. We developed a ...

In this work, we produced gelatin films containing different concentrations of galactomannan by casting solutions. The films were crosslinked by immersion in 30mM solution of 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC). The crosslinking of gelatin-containing films was confirmed by the reduction of free amine band intensity (3400-3200cm(-1)) in the GEL IR, as well as by the evaluation of its behavior when immersed in phosphate-buffer solution. The crosslinking of galactomannan ...

Sugarcane ethanol is produced at large scale generating wastes that could be used for microalgae biomass production in a biorefinery strategy. In this study, forty microalgae strains were screened for growth in sugarcane vinasse at different concentrations. Two microalgae strains, Micractinium sp. This article describes the primary health care offered to 8118 service users with diabetes in Brazil based on data from the PMAQ (Program to Improve Primary Care Access and Quality) first survey. Structure, access, service organization and management, and clinical care quality were analyzed. Prevalence of self-reported receipt of appropriate treatment was 14.3% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 13.4-15.2). Following adjustment, it was 26% higher (prevalence ratio [PR] = 1.26; 95% CI: 1.04-1.54) when primary ...

In 2015, a new epidemic emerged in northeastern of Brazil with increased incidence of a previously rare clinical outcome, microcephaly, in newborns from mothers who were infected during pregnancy. Little is known about the immunopathogenesis of ZIKV-associated microcephaly. Understanding the inflammatory profile and degree of inflammation of persons affected with such ...

Hematological parameters can provide key information to an animal health status. However, this information is usually hard to obtain. Here, we described the hematological parameters of Leptodactylus podicipinus in the Brazilian Pantanal. We measured red blood cell morphometrics, erythrogram, and leukogram. We also tested for phylogenetic signal in the erythrogram and leukogram of 48 frog species from 15 families, testing if body size explains their variation. Pathways to sustainable development are a key to providing innovation transitions and well-being. In this context, knowledge-intensive entrepreneurs play a pivotal role in shaping the markets for new products, services and business models. Prior literature has put emphasis on the contextual elements that shape entrepreneurial opportunities and business endeavors, i.e., entrepreneurial ecosystems. However, little is known about the extent to which these ecosystems are capable of nurturing the emergence ...

Blueberries are rich in polyphenols, anthocyanins and vitamins. Products such as fermented beverages are viable, as these fruits have a short shelf life and are difficult to preserve. During the fermentation process, many volatile and phenolic compounds are released, which will define the quality of the product, bringing detectable aromas and flavors. Some product evaluations can be performed through laboratory analyses, which are not always available, are often expensive and time-consuming. Other ...

The antibacterial effects of four endodontic sealers were evaluated on six anaerobic bacteria and two facultative anaerobes commonly isolated from infected root canals. Calcium hydroxide powder mixed with saline solution was also tested. The agar diffusion test was used, and the zones of inhibition around each sealer were recorded and compared. Fill Canal, a zinc oxide-eugenol-based sealer, showed large zones of inhibition against all bacteria tested. Sealer 26, an epoxy resin containing calcium ...

This paper presents a time domain coupled numerical model, integrating the buoy and the slender structures, for the dynamic analysis of catenary anchor leg mooring (CALM) systems under random environmental loading. The model is based on the finite element discretization of the slender structures and the buoy hydrodynamics can be represented by two approaches: one based on Morison's equation and another using the diffraction/radiation theory. The moored tanker dynamic behavior is represented in the ...

A rapid proinflammatory response after peripheral nerve injury is required for clearance of tissue debris (Wallerian degeneration) and effective regeneration. Unlike the CNS, this response is rapidly terminated in peripheral nerves starting between 2 and 3 weeks after crush injury. We examined the expression and role of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 in the resolution of inflammation and regeneration after sciatic nerve crush injury in mice. IL-10 mRNA increased over the first 7 d after injury, ...

Traumatic injury to the central nervous system (CNS) or the peripheral nervous system (PNS) triggers a cascade of events which culminate in a robust inflammatory reaction. The role played by inflammation in the course of degeneration and regeneration is not completely elucidated. While, in peripheral nerves, the inflammatory response is assumed to be essential for normal progression of Wallerian degeneration and regeneration, CNS trauma inflammation is often associated with poor recovery. In this ...

Mycobacterium leprae , the intracellular etiological agent of leprosy, infects Schwann promoting irreversible physical disabilities and deformities. These cells are responsible for myelination and maintenance of axonal energy metabolism through export of metabolites, such as lactate and pyruvate. In the present work, we observed that infected Schwann cells increase glucose uptake with a concomitant increase in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) activity, the key enzyme of the oxidative pentose pathway. Due to an increase in the incidence of leishmaniases worldwide, the development of new strategies such as prophylactic vaccines to prevent infection and decrease the disease have become a high priority. Therefore, the use of Leishmania peptides to design more specific vaccines against leishmaniases ...

Leprosy neuropathy is a chronic degenerative infectious disorder of the peripheral nerve caused by the intracellular obligate pathogen Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae). Among all nonneuronal cells that constitute the nerve, Schwann cells are remarkable in supporting M. leprae persistence intracellularly. Notably, the success of leprosy infection has been attributed to its ability in inducing the demyelination phenotype after contacting myelinated fibres. However, the exact role M. leprae plays during ...
