Background Liver damage associated with hepatitis C (HCV) may influence the likelihood of experiencing discontinuation due to toxicities or patient/physician choice (TOXPC) in patients taking combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). Little information to address this concern is available from clinical trials as patients with HCV are often excluded. Aims To compare incidence rates of discontinuation due to TOXPC associated with specific antiretrovial drugs in patients with or without HCV. Patients/ ...

The technology of glued laminated (glulam) timber has enabled the design of composite structures with large dimensions. The laminations are generally derived from the sawing of small trees and species of rapidly growing, which yields laminates with low mechanical properties. This study evaluates the benefits of the reinforcement of glulam beams, by employment of steel reinforcement ratios of 2% and 4%. In the beams with a ratio of reinforcement of 2%, in relation to the unreinforced glulam beams, ...

There are only 3 studies comparing the efficacy of 2 different types of lock used in totally implantable catheters regarding occlusion or reflux dysfunction. The present study contains the largest published casuistry (862 patients) and is the only one that analyzes 3 parameters: occlusion, reflux dysfunction, and flow dysfunction. This was a retrospective study of patients operated at a large oncology center and followed up in the outpatient clinic between 2007 and 2015. The patients were divided ...

Limb-sparing procedures are currently considered the standard treatment for lower limb soft tissue sarcoma (STS). Surgical excision combined with vascular resection may be necessary to provide an adequate safety margin and to improve the oncologic outcomes. In this scenario, vascular reconstruction is required to preserve limb function. We evaluated the long-term patency and survival outcomes of arterial and venous reconstruction after resecting lower limb STS in the largest single-center case series ...

Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is associated with increased mortality. However, it is controversial whether AKI affects prognosis per se, being linked to baseline chronic kidney disease (CKD) and bleeding complications. The aim of this study was to disentangle, applying mediation analysis, the association between AKI and clinical outcome, considering CKD and bleedings. Methods and Results Consecutive patients undergoing TAVR were prospectively ...

There has been an increase in the use of totally implantable devices. Catheter fractures are rare but known complications. This case report presents a rare migration site of the catheter fragment into the coronary sinus. The totally implantable catheter was introduced into the right internal jugular vein to deliver chemotherapy. Although it was an unusual site, the catheter fragment was removed without complications using loop-snare technique.

Fully implantable catheters are important for oncology treatments. They can be functionally categorized as valved or nonvalved. Theoretically, a valve prevents spontaneous blood reflux into the catheter, reducing the incidence of complications. We sought to compare the results from the implantation of valved and nonvalved fully implantable 8-French catheters inserted via ultrasound-guided puncture in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment.A retrospective analysis of 100 patients who underwent ...

We present a clustering-based interactive approach to multivariate data analysis, motivated by the specific needs of scintillation data. Ionospheric scintillation is a rapid variation in the amplitude and/or phase of radio signals traveling through the ionosphere. This spatial and time-varying phenomenon is of great interest since it affects the reception quality of satellite signals. Specialized receivers at strategic regions can track multiple variables related to this phenomenon, generating a ...

Physical frailty is often associated with cognitive impairment, possibly because of common underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms. To stimulate research in this field, the concept cognitive frailty was proposed, emphasizing the important role of brain aging. Cognitive frailty was defined as the presence of cognitive deficits in physically frail older persons without dementia. This subtype of frailty is deemed important, as it may represent a prodromal phase for neurodegenerative diseases and is ...

Abstract: Although it is known that the antioxidant properties of melatonin can be modulated by its effect on membrane fluidity, there are few studies on this subject reported in the literature and they are controversial. In this study, viscosimetry and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques were used to determine melatonin’s effect and location on egg phosphatidylcholine bilayers mobility. Melatonin decreases the dynamic viscosity of the lipid dispersion. 31 P‐NMR line width analysis indicated ...

Pulmonary arterial hypertension is known to be related to worse prognosis in patients with heart failure (HF). Quantification of pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) still requires invasive right heart catheterization. Recent studies have shown an accurate method for non-invasive estimation of PVR by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). Our aim was to evaluate the prognostic value of PVR calculated by CMR in patients with congestive HF.We calculated PVR by CMR in 132 patients [age 65.6 ± 13.1 years, left ...

Vascular invasion is no longer considered to be an absolute contraindication to tumor removal, and complex reconstructions are part of the daily activity of vascular surgeons in specialized cancer centers.
