The limited built-in configurability of Linux can lead to expensive code size overhead when it is used in the embedded market. To overcome this problem, we propose the application of link-time compaction and specialization techniques that exploit the a priori known, fixed runtime environment of many embedded systems. In experimental setups based on the ARM XScale and i386 platforms, the proposed techniques are able to reduce the kernel memory footprint with over 16%. We also show how relatively ...

Small program size is an important requirement for embedded systems with limited amounts of memory. We describe how link-time compaction through binary rewriting can achieve code size reductions of up to 62% for statically bound languages such as C, C++, and Fortran, without compromising on performance. We demonstrate how the limited amount of information about a program at link time can be exploited to overcome overhead resulting from separate compilation. This is done with scalable, cost-effective, ...

Two methods to automatically detect cloud‐free skies from the Earth's surface, which are based on algorithms using surface radiation measurements, are compared with Weather Service ground observations and each other. One algorithm uses total and diffuse shortwave downward radiation (referred to as the shortwave radiation algorithm (SWRA)), and the other uses longwave downward radiation in combination with surface temperature and humidity (referred to as the longwave radiation algorithm (LWRA)). The ...

Computers are increasingly being incorporated in devices with a limited amount of available memory. As a result research is increasingly focusing on the automated reduction of program size. Existing literature focuses on either data or code compaction or on highly language dependent techniques. This paper shows how combined code and data compaction can be achieved using a link-time code compaction system that reasons about the use of both code and data addresses. The analyses proposed rely only ...

Osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease were long viewed as independent of each other. However, numerous epidemiological studies, which are discussed in the first part of this review, have provided incontrovertible evidence of a link. Thus, the risk of coronary artery disease and stroke is higher in patients with a history of osteoporotic fracture or low bone mineral density than in non-osteoporotic patients. In the other direction, patients with cardiovascular disease are at higher risk for bone ...

The Trabecular Bone Score is a rather new index obtained at the lumbar spine at the same time as a real bone mineral density. It was developed to reflect bone microarchitecture. It was proposed to be easily used in everyday practice as a surrogate of bone strength. Our aim was to review 1. technical points such as correlations between Trabecular Bone Score and bone microarchitectural parameters, Trabecular Bone Score and bone strength, the effects of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry image spatial ...

Does medically assisted conception increase the risk of post-partum depressive symptoms? Our literature review and meta-analysis showed no increased risk of post-partum depressive symptoms in women after medically assisted conception. Women who conceive with medically assisted conception, which can be considered as a stressful life event, could face an increased risk of depressive symptoms. However, no previous meta-analysis has been performed on the association between medically assisted conception ...

Male osteoporosis is challenging to diagnose and to treat. Underestimation of the risk of male osteoporosis, the combined presence of several interwoven causative factors in many patients, and uncertainty regarding the absorptiometry cutoffs associated with fractures are major obstacles to the diagnosis of male osteoporosis and to the identification of men at risk for fractures. The lifetime risk of osteoporotic fracture is estimated at 15% among men older than 50 years. One-third of proximal femoral ...

Objective. – To look for serum factors detectable early after head injury and predictive of heterotopic bone formation. Patients and methods. – In this prospective study of a homogeneous population of 31 men with severe brain injury, blood samples were obtained 3 months after the accident, and levels of serum factors influenced by bone metabolism were compared between patients with and without heterotopic bone formation. As extensive fractures can influence serum factors, the patients without heterotopic ...

A new case of osteomesopyknosis, a rare autosomal dominant axial osteosclerosis is reported, with 4 affected members of the same family. Biochemical investigations, bone mineral content (BMC) measurement, 99mTc HMDP bone scan and microscopy of iliac crest bone and femoral head have been performed on 1 subject. A marked increase of BMC was found, without abnormality of biochemical data. Microscopy of bone showed an increase of trabecular thickness, and a low rate of bone turnover. No abnormality of ...

Fracture prevention is the goal of osteoporosis treatment. Bone mineral density (BMD) has been the main criterion for deciding whether to initiate treatment, which is usually recommended when the BMD is less than -2.5 SDs from the mean in young women. However, the need to base treatment decisions on the overall fracture risk, rather than on BMD values alone, is now increasingly recognized. Several factors predict the fracture risk independently from BMD. Combining these factors to BMD may improve ...

More and more devices contain computers with limited amounts of memory. As a result, code compaction techniques are gaining popularity, especially when they also improve performance and power consumption, or at least not degrade it. This paper quantifies the side-effects of code abstraction on performance using extensive measurements and simulations on the SPECint2000 benchmark suite and some additional C++ programs. We show how to use profile information in order to obtain almost all the code size ...

Interprocedural data flow analyses of executable programs suffer from the conservative assumptions that need to be made because no precise control flow graph is available and because registers are spilled onto the stack. This paper discusses the exploitation of calling-conventions in executable code data flow analyses to avoid the propagation of the conservative assumptions throughout a program. Based on this exploitation, the existing backward liveness analyses are improved, and a complementary ...

More and more computers are being incorporated in devices where the available amount of memory is limited. This contrasts with the increasing need for additional functionality and the need for rapid application development. While object-oriented programming languages, providing mechanisms such as inheritance and templates, allow fast development of complex applications, they have a detrimental effect on program size. This paper introduces new techniques to reuse the code of whole procedures at the ...

Reproductive life span and fertility have been shown to depend on successful early folliculogenesis, which involves cell-to-cell communication and the concerted regulation of gene expression at both the oocyte and granulosa cell levels. Recently, micro RNAs (miRNAs) were identified as fine-tuners of gene expression. Here, we report that miRNAs can readily be detected within membrane-enclosed vesicles of human follicular fluid. MiRNA expression profiling of the follicular fluid of younger (< 31 years) ...

A shrinking energy budget for mobile devices and increasingly complex communication standards make architecture development for software-defined radio very challenging. Coarse-grained array accelerators are strong candidates for achieving both high performance and low power. The C-programmable hybrid CGA-SIMD accelerator presented here targets emerging broadband cellular and wireless LAN standards, achieving up to 100-Mbps throughput with an average power consumption of 220 mW.
