Abundant and diverse dinoflagellate cyst assemblages from the Rhaetian of southern England are characterized by the occurrence of a new species of Rhaetogonyaulax, some undescribed taxa and numerous forms with Arctic and Australasian affinities. The dinoflagellate cyst assemblages permit a discussion of the palaeogeographic distribution of dinoflagellate cysts in the Late Triassic. The hypothesis on a Late Triassic migration event of organic walled microplankton from higher latitudes to the Boreal ...

Abstract The Upper Permian and Triassic sequences of the NW Caucasus present a good record of the Cimmerian events, rather undisturbed by the subsequent Alpine deformations. Original field work with new fossil identifications, microfacies analysis, and sandstone petrography were carried out. During the late Permian, active strike-slip basins were filled by continental clastics successions. Marine ingressions during the latest Permian, led to the formation of sponge reefs and skeletal carbonate ramps. ...

Abstract New and previously published dinoflagellate cyst data from the Pliensbachian and early Toarcian of northern and southern Europe have been compared in order to define successions of Boreal and Tethyan bioevents respectively. Significant stratigraphical differences between these two regions indicates that strong provincialism affected dinoflagellates in Europe during the Early Jurassic. This therefore precludes the erection of a pan‐European palynostratigraphy for the Pliensbachian to early ...

Early Toarcian organic-rich sediments, reflecting the Lower Jurassic oceanic anoxic event, were investigated in the Brown Moor Borehole, North Yorkshire (northern England). Integrated micropalaeontological (calcareous nannofossils and dinoflagellate cysts) and geochemical (rock-eval pyrolysis) analyses reveal a sequence of changes mainly driven by palaeoecological shifts. These changes mainly involve the composition, source and preservation rate of sedimentary organic matter as well as algal population ...

SUMMARY A palynological investigation of the Lower and lowermost Middle Jurassic (Sinemurian to Aalenian) strata of North Yorkshire has been undertaken which incorporates material from the BGS Brown Moor Borehole, near Acklam and the coastal outcrops between Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay. The resulting dataset is an additional contribution to the Jurassic dinoflagellate cyst biostratigraphy of northern England. Two distinctive variants of Liasidium variabile appear to have biostratigraphical significance ...

The integration of palynological and geochemical data from three lower Toarcian successions in central Italy reveals that the composition of organic-walled phytoplankton assemblages were strongly affected by palaeoecological conditions related to bituminous sedimentation which accompanied the global anoxic event. The marked compositional variations of dinoflagellate cysts and prasinophytes, together with geochemical variations, have been linked to changes in surface water habitats during the lower ...

Abstract. The integrated use of calcareous nannofossil and dinoflagellate cyst events in a study of the late Pliensbachian–early Toarcian interval in central Italy has yielded a high resolution biostratigraphy. The use of both the first and last occurrences of selected taxa belonging to the two phytoplankton groups allows the dating of the sediments with a very refined detail, even when lithologies are unfavourable to the preservation of one fossil group. The evolutionary history of calcareous nannofossils ...

Quantitative and qualitative analyses have been carried out on the lower Toarcian organic rich lithologies of the Umbria-Marche domain (Marne di Monte Serrone formation) with the aim to emphasize the potential of organic and geochemical parameters as palaeoenvironmental indices. The organic matter and phytoplankton data suggest that the palaeoenvironmental evolution of this area was controlled by a third order cyclicity, induced by climatic-eustatic fluctuations. During the early Toarcian sea level ...

Abstract Palynological studies of the Lower Toarcian Pozzale section of central Italy (Tethyan Realm, Mediterranean province) have revealed significant differences between palynomorph assemblages from the Boreal and Tethyan realms and marked similarities between the two bioprovinces of the Tethyan Realm (Mediterranean and Sub‐Mediterranean). The Pozzale dinoflagellate cyst assemblages differ from coeval north European assemblages because of the earlier first occurrence of dinoflagellate cysts belonging ...

Abstract The qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the Toarcian sporomorph assemblages from the Umbria‐Marche domain, are consistent with those of the palynological phase VI (late Pliensbachian, Toarcian, earliest Middle Jurassic) as defined by Visscher et al. (1980) in the Germanic realm. The presence of compositional similarities among palynological assemblages from widely separated areas emphasizes the potential of palynology in correlation problems. The Umbria‐Marche sporomorph assemblages ...

Abstract Two species of dinoflagellate cysts, Umbriadinium mediterraneense gen. et sp. nov. and Valvaeodinium hirsutum sp. nov. occur in the Lower Jurassic (lower Toarcian) of the Tethyan Realm. Umbriadinium mediterraneense exhibits a suessiacean paratabulation with eight to nine paraplate series and a disintegration type combination archeopyle. Valvaeodinium hirsutum is a species characterised by small size and ornamented by numerous non‐tabular spines arising from the autophragm. The two new species ...

The extant Antarctic dinoflagellate genus Polarella and the southern European Early Jurassic dinoflagellate cyst Umbriadinium are extremely similar in morphology, particularly in their size, ornamentation and tabulation. Polarella is therefore placed in the subfamily Umbriadinioideae on this morphological evidence. The two genera, however, are maintained as separate entities for several reasons including minor differences in tabulation. This means that the stratigraphical distribution of the subfamily ...

Abstract The acritarch Polygonium jurassicum sp. nov. is proposed for polygonomorph acritarchs with a surface ornament of hollow spines. It is the second species of Polygonium described from Jurassic sediments. Polygonium jurassicum sp. nov. is reported from lower Toarcian sediments from central Italy and northwest Greece; the stratigraphic range is compared with the ammonite and calcareous nannofossil zonations.
