Shared governance is considered an innovative management process model that includes shared decision-making between all members of the healthcare workforce and focuses on nurses’ control over their practice and accountability of care. One specific tool that measures shared governance perceptions of nurses is the RN-focused Index of Professional Governance (IPNG). The objective of this study was to assess reliability and add to the validity of the IPNG by further establishing the construct validity ...

Since 1993 sulphadoxine/pyrimethamine (SP) has been used as the first‐line drug for uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Malawi. To investigate the current efficacy of SP and other antimalarial drug resistance, we studied in vivo and in vitro responses to SP, chloroquine (CQ), mefloquine (MF), quinine (QN), and halofantrine (HF) in Salima, central Malawi. In a follow‐up of 14 days, nine (13.8%) of 65 children under five showed RII/RIII parasitological resistance, and in in vitro microtests 18 ( ...

Cervical cancer is a common and deadly disease, especially in developing countries. We developed and implemented an interactive, tablet-based educational intervention to improve cervical cancer knowledge among women in rural Malawi. Chichewa-speaking adult women in six rural villages participated. Each woman took a pretest, participated in the lesson, and then took a posttest. The lesson included information on cervical cancer symptoms, causes, risk factors, prevention, and treatment. Over the 6- ...

In view of the postfailure simulation, the material point method (MPM) has higher computational efficiency and better computational stability compared with the other numerical methods. This paper aims to understand the entire failure mechanism of the rotational slide using MPM. The Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model is implemented in the modified update stress last (MUSL) scheme. The proposed MPM code is validated by a sand collapse experiment. The simulation result is in good agreement with the experiment ...

Abstract Enhancing cropping intensity is the most effective and significant method to improve regional crop production and ensure food security. However, our understanding of the impacts of reduced cropping intensity on soil quality and ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) with soil depth remains incomplete in tropical regions. Here, we performed a 4‐year field experiment to estimate the impacts of cropping intensity (continuous cropping, winter fallow, and annual fallow) on soil quality and EMF depending ...

The National Development Plan 2030 (NDP) is arguably South Africa’s widest and most inclusive plan for economic and social development since 1994. It is evidence of the urgent need for development in South Africa, although its political will is yet to be determined. A test of the NDP’s strength is whether it can implement development beyond the document using existing state institutions and structures. This article argues that the NDP may be a prudent plan for South Africa to become a democratic ...

Democratic decentralisation was introduced in South Africa during the transition to democracy (1990-1994). It followed a long trajectory of centralisation and decentralisation processes that took place during apartheid. This paper argues that in order to more adequately understand the prospects for decentralisation to achieve its intended outcomes in South African local government, one has to understand some of the complexities and political dynamics present in this sphere of government. In so doing, ...

Hospitals today are facing adjustments to reimbursements from excessive readmission rates. One of the most common and expensive causes of readmissions is exacerbation of a heart failure condition. The objective of this paper was to determine if there was an association between the presence of anemia in patients with acute decompensated heart failure and their readmission rate. Using archival data of 4 hospitals in the Miami area, a sample of 847 inpatients with a diagnostic related group (DRG) of ...

With the goal of improving patient satisfaction in a Mother/Baby unit (MBU), a voluntary team of nurses called "Raising the Bar Team" (RTBT) was formed. After the team analyzed the last two quarters' Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction results of the unit, a review of the literature was conducted on handoff bedside shift reporting, and patients were involved in the process. According to the literature, bedside shift reporting results in patient involvement and empowerment allows patients to recognize ...

One of the major goals of Healthy People 2010 was to considerably decrease the preterm birth rate from 11.6% in 1998 to 7.6% by the year 2010. Nevertheless, the preterm birth rate went up to 12.5% in 2004, higher than the rate in 1998. As birth rates for premature infants increase, a large number of late preterm infants (LPI) are grouped together with term infants and are treated and managed the same ( 1 Engle W.A. Collaborative filtering is one of the most widely used recommendation technologies, but the data sparsity and cold start problem of collaborative filtering algorithms are difficult to solve effectively. In order to alleviate the problem of data sparsity in collaborative filtering algorithm, firstly, a weighted improved SimRank algorithm is proposed to compute the rating similarity between users in rating data set. The improved SimRank can find more nearest neighbors for target users according to ...

Abstract Rice ( Oryza sativa L.) feeds more than half of the global population and faces the critical issues related to food security and environmental sustainability. This study analyzed double rice production data from 2010 to 2020 to assess its spatiotemporal dynamic in food production and carbon (C) footprint in Hainan province, China. The results revealed a 29.5% reduction in rice planting area, leading to a significantly decreased rice self‐sufficiency rate from 38% to 33% from 2010 to 2020. ...
