An extreme learning machine (ELM)-based receiver for multi-user massive MIMO systems is introduced. The proposed ELM combining method, defined in the complex plane, is designed to directly perform MIMO combining processing to the received uplink signals, based on the adoption of the pilot symbols as training data. Numerical results show that by appropriately setting the number of hidden neurons, the ELM achieves higher spectral efficiency and smaller BER, with fewer floating-point operations than ...

Intensive silvopastoral systems (iSPS) are emerging as a tool for mitigation and adaptation of cattle ranching to climate change (CC). Under iSPS, 12 times more beef is produced than under extensive pastures and 4.5 more beef than under improved pastures without trees, but methane (CH4) emissions do not increase in the same proportion being 6.8 and 2.8 higher in the iSPS, respectively. In consequence, methane emissions per ton of beef produced are 1.8 times lower in the iSPS as compared with extensive ...

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among women worldwide. AKT1 encodes the kinase B alpha protein. The rs121434592, rs12881616, rs11555432, rs11555431, rs2494732, and rs3803304 single nucleotide polymorphisms have been identified in the AKT1 kinase gene. Activated AKT1 phosphorylates downstream substrates regulating cell growth, metabolism, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and drug responses. It is essential to know how breast cancer risk is associated with histopathological and ...

Triatoma dimidiata, one of the major vectors of Chagas disease in Central America, is found in both domestic and peri-domestic habitats. Questions concerning population boundaries, infestation rates, insecticide resistance, and geographic dispersal of triatomine bugs persist and may be resolved using genetic markers such as microsatellites. Microsatellites are short tandem repeats found dispersed throughout a genome and can be useful for genotypic identification. We developed a plasmid library from ...

Mature Rambouillet ewes (n = 37, 22°N) receiving 70% of energy and 80% of protein requirements were randomly assigned to either of two treatments: intramuscular injections of vitamin E (VitE; n = 20, 4 IU vitamin E kg−1 of live weight) ...

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are DNA fibers decorated with histones and antimicrobial proteins from cytoplasmic granules released into the extracellular space in a process denominated NETosis. The molecular pathways involved in NETosis have not been completely understood. Classical NETosis mechanisms involve the neutrophil elastase translocation to nucleus due to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by NADPH oxidase (NOX2) or the peptidyl arginine deiminase 4 (PAD4) activation in ...

Let $M$ be a weighted manifold with boundary $\partial M$, i.e., a Riemannian manifold where a density function is used to weight the Riemannian Hausdorff measures. In this paper we compute the first and the second variational formulas of the interior weighted area for deformations by hypersurfaces with boundary in $\partial M$. As a consequence, we obtain variational characterizations of critical points and second order minima of the weighted area with or without a volume constraint. Moreover, in the ...

We consider a smooth Euclidean solid cone endowed with a smooth homogeneous density function used to weight Euclidean volume and hypersurface area. By assuming convexity of the cone and a curvature-dimension condition, we prove that the unique compact, orientable, second order minima of the weighted area under variations preserving the weighted volume and with free boundary in the boundary of the cone are intersections with the cone of round spheres centered at the vertex.

Commercial mobile devices vary in brand, size, and functionalities, but they all allow people to interact with educational applications. In software engineering, application development techniques, approaches, methodologies, and processes (e.g., BBD, FDD, RAD, DDD) are often time consuming, costly, or aim at expert developers – which implies that users outside the software development field (e.g., teachers) need great practice to become experienced application developers. For constant mean curvature surfaces of class C 2 immersed inside Sasakian sub-Riemannian 3-manifolds we obtain a formula for the second derivative of the area which involves horizontal analytical terms, the Webster scalar curvature of the ambient manifold, and the extrinsic shape of the surface. Then we prove classification results for complete surfaces with empty singular set which are stable, i.e., second order minima of the area under a volume constraint, inside the 3-dimensional sub-Riemannian ...

We study the isoperimetric problem for Euclidean space endowed with a continuous density. In dimension one, we characterize isoperimetric regions for a unimodal density. In higher dimensions, we prove existence results and we derive stability conditions, which lead to the conjecture that for a radial log-convex density, balls about the origin are isoperimetric regions. Finally, we prove this conjecture and the uniqueness of minimizers for the density exp $$(|x|^2)$$ by using symmetrization techniques.

We prove that the isoperimetric profile of a convex domain Ω with compact closure in a Riemannian manifold (M n+1 , g) satisfies a second-order differential inequality that only depends on the dimension of the manifold and on a lower bound on the Ricci curvature of Q. Regularity properties of the profile and topological consequences on isoperimetric regions arise naturally from this differential point of view. Moreover, by integrating the differential inequality, we obtain sharp comparison theorems: ...

We study the problem of existence of regions separating a given amount of volume with the least possible perimeter inside a Euclidean cone. Our main result shows that nonexistence for a given volume implies that the isoperimetric profile of the cone coincides with the one of the half-space. This allows us to give some criteria ensuring existence of isoperimetric regions: for instance, local convexity of the cone at some boundary point. We also characterize which are the stable regions in a convex ...

We consider area-stationary surfaces, perhaps with a volume constraint, in the Heisenberg group H1 endowed with its Carnot–Carathéodory distance. By analyzing the first variation of area, we characterize C2 area-stationary surfaces as those with mean curvature zero (or constant if a volume-preserving condition is assumed) and such that the characteristic curves meet orthogonally the singular curves. Moreover, a Minkowski-type formula relating the area, the mean curvature, and the volume is obtained ...

NETosis is a neutrophil process involving sequential steps from pathogen detection to the release of DNA harboring antimicrobial proteins, including the central generation of NADPH oxidase dependent or independent ROS. Previously, we reported that NETosis triggered by Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites is independent of NADPH oxidase activity in neutrophils, but dependent on the viability of the parasites and no ROS source was identified. Here, we explored the possibility that E. histolytica trophozoites ...

Protozoan pathogens such as Plasmodium, Leishmania, Trypanosoma and Entamoeba are responsible for several of the most widespread and lethal human diseases. Their successful survival depends mainly on evading the host immune system by, for example, penetrating and multiplying within cells, varying their surface antigens, eliminating their protein coat, and modulating the host immune response. Immunosuppression is sometimes caused directly by parasite products and sometimes involves antigenic mimicry, ...
