An efficient and simple synthesis of 3-cyano-2-pyridone derivatives (6a–f) through 3,4-dihydropyridin-2-one oxidation process is described. A greener method to synthesize 3,4-dihydropyridin-2-one has also been developed by rearranging 4H-pyran (4a–f) derivatives in aqueous medium applying H2SO4 as the catalyst source and microwave irradiation. The vasorelaxant activity of 3-cyano-2-pyridone derivatives (6a–f) was proved on isolated thoracic aorta rat rings with and without endothelium (+E and −E, respectively) ...

The hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) optimization of oat husk was performed using a response surface methodology. Furthermore, anaerobic digestion (AD) of spent liquor and hydrochar addition were evaluated in the biomethane potential (BMP) test. Results found that temperature influences the most in the studied responses (i.e., mass yield (MY) and higher heating value (HHV)). Optimal hydrochar MY (53.8%) and HHV (21.5 MJ/kg) were obtained for 219.2 °C, 30 min, and 0.08 of biomass/water ratio. A successful ...

Abstract Systemic inflammatory diseases enhance circulating oxidative stress levels, which results in the oxidation of circulating high-density lipoprotein (oxHDL). Endothelial cell function can be negatively impacted by oxHDL, but the underlying mechanisms for this remain unclear. Some reports indicate that the lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1) is also a receptor for oxHDL. However, it is unknown if oxHDL induces increased LOX-1 expression at the plasma membrane, as an event ...

Background: The main purpose of this research was to determine the stability of three different sanitary shoes on nurses with eyes open and closed with respect to barefoot condition. In addition, the secondary aim was to determine the reliability of stability measurements under these different conditions. Methods: A crossover quasi-experimental study (NCT03764332) was performed. Twenty-six nurses who wore different sanitary shoes (Eva Plus Ultralight®, Gym Step® and Milan-SCL Liso®) were evaluated ...

Background: Variations in the foot structure related with the high or low arch are identified common lower limb conditions, and it is supposed to be the effect on the quality of life (QoL) associated to foot health in adults. Here we aimed to determine the relationships between relatively high and low feet arches and QoL. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out. Among 138 adults enrolled in the study, 66 had a high arch, 21 had a low arch, and 51 were within the normal range. Changes related ...

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to explore students' perceptions of the educational environment (EE) in a Spanish school of podiatry. Various aspects of EE were compared by academic year in the program. Methods This was a cross‐sectional study using a questionnaire to collect perceptions using data from a 2015 survey. Podiatric medical students from Extremadura University participated in this study. EE was assessed with the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) tool. The ...

Peroneus longus and brevis (PLB) disorders are commonly in people with lateral ligamentous instability, ankle pain, lateral hindfoot pain and structures of the proximal compartment of the lower legs and their muscle activity is believed to be influenced by different footwear types. The proposal of this research is to evaluate the effects of five types of footwear with respect to the barefoot condition and analyze the activity patterns of PLB muscles in healthy subjects during the gait cycle.Thirty ...

Background Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are among the most common agents of human febrile illness worldwide and the most important emerging pathogens, causing multiple notable epidemics of human disease over recent decades. Despite the public health relevance, little is know about the geographic distribution, relative impact, and risk factors for arbovirus infection in many regions of the world. Our objectives were to describe the arboviruses associated with acute undifferentiated febrile ...

A small focus of hemorrhagic fever (HF) cases occurred near Cochabamba, Bolivia, in December 2003 and January 2004. Specimens were available from only one fatal case, which had a clinical course that included fever, headache, arthralgia, myalgia, and vomiting with subsequent deterioration and multiple hemorrhagic signs. A non-cytopathic virus was isolated from two of the patient serum samples, and identified as an arenavirus by IFA staining with a rabbit polyvalent antiserum raised against South ...

The perception of dissatisfaction with rewards is associated with the growing number of faculty members who express their intention to leave the university (TI). Our study has two aims. First, to analyze the phenomenon of TI based on faculty members’ perception of both extrinsic as intrinsic rewards (EIR), considering the moderating effect of age, seniority, and education level. Secondly, to analyze whether the relationships among the EIR are stronger or weaker for specific faculty members, considering ...

We present a systematic study of laser cleaning of black paint deposited on both standard and frosted glasses. We performed laser cleaning of black paint layers of different thicknesses in both front- and backside laser irradiation geometries. Using laser ablation induced photoacoustics (LAIP), we determined the ablation threshold of the paint that turns out to be independent of the paint thickness and substrate's properties. To characterize the efficiency of the cleaning process as a function of ...

3D image scans are an assessment tool for neurological damage in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. This diagnosis process can be automatized to help medical staff through Decision Support Systems (DSSs), and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are good candidates, because they are effective when applied to spatial data. This paper proposes a 3D CNN ordinal model for assessing the level or neurological damage in PD patients. Given that CNNs need large datasets to achieve acceptable performance, a ...

Abstract Background Point prevalence surveys (PPSs) on antibiotic use are useful for understanding different aspects related to prescription patterns in hospitals. Methods An adaptation of the WHO methodology for a PPS on antibiotic use was applied. Hospital wards were divided into medical (MED), surgical (SUR), ICUs, gynaecology and obstetrics (GO), high-risk (HR) and mixed wards (MIX).

Heavy metal pollution has become an environmental and health problem worldwide. With the aim of finding novel strategies for metal bioremediation, endophytic fungi from the heavy metal hyperaccumulator plant Vachellia farnesiana were isolated and characterized. The plants were growing in mine tailings, rich in Zn, Pb, and Cu. Morphological and phylogenetic analyses indicated that the fungal strains belonged to Neocosmospora and Aspergillus genera. The Neocosmospora isolate belongs to the Fusarium ...
