✓ A case of brain-stem ganglioglioma is reported. A review of the literature revealed only 13 other reported cases. Brain-stem gangliogliomas usually become symptomatic in the first and second decades of life and involve the medulla and pons. Clinical improvement and prolonged survival have been reported after partial resection.

Castanea sativa Mill. and C. crenata Lieb. and Zucc. store 11S globulins as major seed proteins while Quercus ilex L. and Q. robur L., also members of the Fagaceae family, accumulate glutelins. The structure of the 11S Castanea globulins, which is similar to the accepted model for this class of proteins, has been studied by different two-dimensional electrophoretic methods. The oligomer has a Mr of 240 000–260 000, and the pairs of acidic-basic subunits, which form it, show great heterogeneity. ...

Basic endochitinases are abundant proteins in Castanea sativa Mill. cotyledons. Three basic chitinases were purified with molecular masses of 25, 26, and 32 kD (Ch1, Ch2, and Ch3) and with isoelectric points between 8 and 9.5. Antibodies raised against Ch1 cross-reacted with Ch2 and Ch3. However, Ch3 showed differences when compared with the other two enzymes, especially in its higher cysteine content. The size, amino acid composition, and N-terminal sequence of Ch1 indicate that it is a class II ...

Low molecular weight globulins, which are abundant proteins in the Pinus pinaster Ait. megagametophyte, were purified and characterized. They showed a dimeric structure formed of one large and one small subunit linked by disulfide bridges. They were characterized by a high Arg and Glx content and by a relatively high Cys content. A comparison of their characteristics with those of angiosperm 2S proteins suggests that there is homology between them.

Abstract Aim A multiple glacial refugia hypothesis for Mediterranean plant species was tested with the evergreen Quercus complex ( Quercus suber L., Quercus ilex L. and Quercus coccifera L.) from the Iberian Peninsula, using molecular and palaeobotanical data. Location The Iberian Peninsula, which is an ecologically and physiographically complex area located on the western edge of the Mediterranean Basin. Methods We sampled 1522 individuals from 164 populations of Q. suber , Q. ilex and Q. coccifera . ...

The importance of natural selection for shaping adaptive trait differentiation among natural populations of allogamous tree species has long been recognized. Determining the molecular basis of local adaptation remains largely unresolved, and the respective roles of selection and demography in shaping population structure are actively debated. Using a multilocus scan that aims to detect outliers from simulated neutral expectations, we analyzed patterns of nucleotide diversity and genetic differentiation ...

Nuclear (AFLPs and ITSs) and chloroplast DNA markers (cpDNA) were analysed in Quercus suber L., Q. ilex L. and Q. coccifera L. in order to detect vicariant patterns in the Western Mediterranean Basin populations. Clustering methods, i.e., parsimony, minimum spanning network, UPGMA and PCO, were used to obtain robust phylogenies. The Mantel test was used to check the geographic structure of the populations. Nuclear markers’ based phylogenies showed high bootstrap values at basal nodes of clusters indicative ...

Climate change is a major challenge particularly for forest tree species, which will have to face the severe alterations of environmental conditions with their current genetic pool. Thus, an understanding of their adaptive responses is of the utmost interest. In this work we have selected Pinus pinaster as a model species. This pine is one of the most important conifers (for which molecular tools and knowledge are far more scarce than for angiosperms) in the Mediterranean Basin, which is characterised ...

Because postlicensure surveillance determined that a previous rotavirus vaccine, RotaShield, caused intussusception in 1 of every 10,000 recipients, we assessed the association of the new monovalent rotavirus vaccine (RV1) with intussusception after routine immunization of infants in Mexico and Brazil. We used case-series and case-control methods to assess the association between RV1 and intussusception. Infants with intussusception were identified through active surveillance at 69 hospitals (16 in ...

ABSTRACT Oligosaccharide synthesis is an important cryoprotection strategy used by woody plants during winter dormancy. At the onset of autumn, starch stored in the stem and buds is broken down in response to the shorter days and lower temperatures resulting in the buildup of oligosaccharides. Given that the enzyme DSP4 is necessary for diurnal starch degradation in Arabidopsis leaves, this study was designed to address the role of DSP4 in this seasonal process in Castanea sativa Mill. The expression ...
