Staphylococcus aureus is the main human pathogen that colonizes individuals in general population. The objective of the study was evaluate the epidemiological and sensitivity profile of S. aureus lineage, isolated in health care workers (HCW) of a University Hospital in Pernambuco state, Brazil. Biological samples of hands and nasal cavities were sown in agar sheep blood. Colonies under suspicion of being S. aureus were identified using Gram staining, catalase test and coagulase, mannitol-salty agar ...

Cerebral toxoplasmosis is the most common cause of space occupying brain lesion in patients with HIV/AIDS in Brazil. In the post-HAART era, it is responsible for high rates of morbidity and mortality worldwide. This study consists of a case series of 56 patients diagnosed with cerebral toxoplasmosis whose clinical features, brain imaging and cerebrospinal fluid aspects were analyzed. Cerebral toxoplasmosis led to the diagnosis of infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in 27 (48.2%) of ...

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus spp. is an important healthcare-associated pathogen and the identification of methicillin-resistant strains in samples of colonization may provide data to assist in the antimicrobial therapy success. OBJECTIVES: To determine the occurrence of colonization by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus spp. (MRS), through the detection of the mecA gene and to evaluate different phenotypic methods for the presumptive detection of methicillin resistance in samples of the anterior ...

ABSTRACT It is well established that subclinical mastitis (SCM), characterized by somatic cell count (SCC) >200,000 cells/mL, has a negative effect on the productivity, reproductive performance, and survivability of cows from conventional dairy herds. However, in organic herds, where the use of antimicrobial drugs is restricted for the treatment and control of intramammary infections (IMI) in dairy cows, little is known about the effect of SCM on performance and survivability. The objective of this study was ...

ABSTRACT Foodborne, disease-causing microorganisms are increasingly resistant to commercial antibiotics. Thus, there is a need for the development of new agents capable of acting efficiently in the control of these pathogens. Terpenoids and phenylpropanoids stand out for having high biological activity and a broad spectrum of action. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the antibacterial potential of limonene, β-citronellol, carvone, carvacrol, eugenol and trans-cinnamaldehyde and to investigate ...

Abstract Sorghum [ Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is an ensilable tropical plant known as a good alternative to maize crops in regions with scarce rainfall. The objective of this trial was to obtain prediction models based on nutritional contents and end products of sorghum silage fermentation as related to the dry‐matter composition of fresh plants before ensiling. Eleven different sorghum cultivars (including silage, graniferous and sweet types) were used. Twenty‐five sorghum plots were harvested between ...

Aging is an important factor that contributes to the clinical outcome of burn patients. The aim of this study was to examine the characteristics of patients admitted to a Burn Unit with the diagnosis of burn injury and to determine the impact of age on mortality. We made a retrospective analysis of successive patients admitted in a major burn centre in Portugal since 1/1/2012 until 31/12/2016. They were divided into 2 groups: "elderly" (≥65 years) and "non-elderly" (<65 years). The variables analysed ...

Although dopaminergic systems are more commonly associated with the reinforcing effects of various stimuli, numerous reports have demonstrated a relationship between changes in dopaminergic transmission and aversive situations. In the present study, we examined the involvement of D1-like and D2-like receptors in the expression of conditioned freezing using the context as the conditioned stimulus. Intraperitoneal injections of the D1 agonist SKF38393 or the D1 antagonist SCH23390 did not change the ...

Abstract Background Chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO), also known as chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis, is a noninfectious autoinflammatory disorder that occurs primarily in children and adolescents and is characterized by episodic musculoskeletal pain with a protracted course. Main body Traditionally, the diagnosis of CNO is made by exclusion and commonly requires bone biopsy to rule out infection and malignancy. However, bone biopsy may be avoided when imaging and clinical characteristic ...

The ticks Rhipicephalus microplus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l) are of great importance to agriculture, veterinary medicine and public health. Due to a number of problems related to the use of synthetic acaricides, natural products emerge as promising substances for alternative tick control. Coffee is one of the oldest and most consumed beverages. The raw material for obtaining a good quality coffee drink is the grain. Bioactive compounds and organic acids in coffee beans are reflections of a series of attributes that, together, confer to the coffee peculiar flavor and aroma. Whole-body (WB) MRI has emerged as an attractive method for oncologic evaluation, potentially replacing conventional imaging modalities and providing a one-step wide-coverage assessment of both the skeleton and soft tissues. In addition to providing anatomic information, WB MRI may also yield a functional analysis with the inclusion of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). DWI translates microstructural changes, resulting in an excellent alternative to fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT. WB MRI (with DWI) offers ...

Abstract Osteoid osteoma is a painful, benign and common bone tumor that is prevalent in young adults. The typical clinical presentation consists of pain that becomes worse at night and is relieved by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The most common imaging finding is a lytic lesion, known as a nidus, with variable intralesional mineralization, accompanied by bone sclerosis, cortical thickening and surrounding bone marrow edema, as well as marked enhancement with intravenous contrast injection. ...

This work reports results of re-infection of BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice with different recombinant strains of Toxoplasma gondii. Mice were prime-infected with the non-virulent D8 strain and challenged with virulent strains. PCR–RFLP of cS10-A6 genetic marker of T. gondii demonstrated that BALB/c mice were re-infected with the EGS strain, while C57BL/6 mice were re-infected with the EGS and CH3 strains. Levels of IFN-γ and IL-10 after D8 prime-infection were lower in C57BL/6 than in BALB/c mice. Brain ...
