This article aims to demonstrate the importance of establishing pro-competition rules in the concession of multiple airports to private companies by describing the recent Brazilian experience. More specifically, it addresses: (i) how the economic literature deals with potential competition among different airports, and how this competition was dealt with in the concession programs of Australia, Mexico and the United Kingdom; and (ii) Brazil's recent experience with airport concessions, where international ...

This work review shows a description of non-chromatographic and chromatographic procedures proposed for speciation analysis of antimony employing hydride generation (HG) coupled to atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) in environmental matrices, including details of HG-AFS as the detection technique. Non-chromatographic procedures have been developed based on the determination of total antimony after a pre-reduction step. The main reductant agents used are discussed. Antimony(III) has been quantified ...

The American Supreme Court decision in Ohio v. American Express (AMEX) will shape the future of US antitrust enforcement on multi-sided platforms. In a controversial landmark ruling, both the Court’s majority and minority battled over definitions of relevant markets in the complex industry of electronic payments: the majority affirming that “transaction platforms” always constitute a single “two-sided relevant market” and the minority arguing that electronic payments are regular complementary goods ...

This paper examines the question of how a nation can combat corruption and collusion and prevent these practices from plaguing and undermining public procurement processes. This matter is especially important to Brazil where Operation Car Wash (Operação Lava Jato) exposed widespread corruption and collusion affecting public procurement. Although focusing on Brazil, this paper reflects an academic and policy debate as to how a nation can escape from a “high-corruption” equilibrium, especially one strengthened ...

As 2021 comes to a close, the advances in vaccination against COVID-19 allow the world to glimpse an end to the pandemic. In Brazil, the disease has cost more than 600,000 lives and affected more than 21 million people. When the second wave of COVID-19 hit in early 2021, the country saw more than 3,500 daily deaths. As Brazil started to recover from this number, the first reports of infection by the Delta (B.1.617.2) variant of concern (VoC) in the country were emerging. The first confirmed case of ...

In the present study, we provide a retrospective genomic epidemiology analysis of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We gathered publicly available data from GISAID and sequenced 1927 new genomes sampled periodically from March 2021 to June 2021 from 91 out of the 92 cities of the state. Our results showed that the pandemic was characterized by three different phases driven by a successive replacement of lineages. Interestingly, we noticed that viral supercarriers accounted ...

In this study, we report the first case of intra-host SARS-CoV-2 recombination during a coinfection by the variants of concern (VOC) AY.33 (Delta) and P.1 (Gamma) supported by sequencing reads harboring a mosaic of lineage-defining mutations. By using next-generation sequencing reads intersecting regions that simultaneously overlap lineage-defining mutations from Gamma and Delta, we were able to identify a total of six recombinant regions across the SARS-CoV-2 genome within a sample. Four of them mapped ...

This essay is about how changes in our communications environment have the potential to modify the way we produce information about the world in which we live, information that we conventionally call In a networked environment, individuals engage in the production of news, telling their own version of the facts happening in the world, attributing meaning to them and debating over their relevance. This has led to the emergence of various collaborative media communities on the Internet (e.g. and Slashdot), ...

This short paper summarizes the main findings of a comprehensive study the authors conducted on the way “vertical restraints” adopted by dominant firms (with a focus on exclusive dealing, rebates and discounts and tying) have been treated by enforcement agencies and courts in the European Union (“EU”) and in Brazil. A comparative analysis of the treatment of vertical restraints in these two jurisdictions is particularly interesting for the following reasons. First, the EU competition law system is mature, ...

This paper is concerned with the policy choices and trends related to the institutional design of competition law and regulatory enforcement. It focuses on the different architectures that seek to reconcile and bring together the tools used to regulate the behaviour of undertakings ex ante and to sanction eventual abuses ex post. These architectures are becoming ever more sophisticated, as both the language and the goals of regulation and competition law reach new levels of convergence. While the ...

Enteric disorders in pigs are related to the fimbriae F4 (K88), F5 (K99), F6 (987P), F41 and F18 of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). Immunization of sows with adhesins is important to stimulate the production of antibodies and the consequent transfer of these to the piglets via colostrum to prevent diarrhea during the neonate period and after weaning. The objective of this study was to evaluate the immune response of the sows immunized with recombinant ETEC proteins (F4, F5, F6, F18 and F41). ...
