A goal of nuclear theory is to make quantitative predictions of low-energy nuclear observables starting from accurate microscopic internucleon forces. A major element of such an effort is applying unitary transformations to soften the nuclear Hamiltonian and hence accelerate the convergence of ab initio calculations as a function of the model space size. The consistent simultaneous transformation of external operators, however, has been overlooked in applications of the theory, particularly for ...

Sum rules provide useful insights into transition strength functions and are often expressed as expectation values of an operator. In this letter I demonstrate that non-energy-weighted transition sum rules have strong secular dependences on the energy of the initial state. Such non-trivial systematics have consequences: the simplification suggested by the generalized Brink-Axel hypothesis, for example, does not hold for most cases, though it weakly holds in at least some cases for electric dipole ...

Although the modern shell-model picture of atomic nuclei is built from single-particle orbits with good total angular momentum $j$, leading to $j\ensuremath{-}j$ coupling, decades ago phenomenological models suggested that a simpler picture for $0p$-shell nuclides can be realized via coupling of the total spin $S$ and total orbital angular momentum $L$. I revisit this idea with large-basis, no-core shell-model calculations using modern ab initio two-body interactions and dissect the resulting wave functions ...

The A-X system of I2 has been recorded in absorption, under conditions of medium resolution, over the region 8000 – 13 400 Å. Bandheads in progressions based on v″ = 6 through 18 have been measured and assigned. A new vibrational numbering for the A state is proposed, which leads to more reliable values for the important constants of the A state: Te = 10 906 ± 3 cm−1, De = 1641 ± 3 cm−1, ωe = 92.5 ± 0.5 cm−1, ωexe = 1.20 ± 0.08 cm−1, ωeye = −0.062 ± 0.006 cm−1.

Circular dichroism (CD) is a special kind of electronic absorption spectroscopy that uses circularly polarized light rather than isotropic light. CD is a particularly useful technique because it is sensitive to the conformation of a molecule, and because it can be applied to randomly oriented molecules in solution and in the gas phase. For a molecule to exhibit a CD spectrum it must be asymmetric, that is, it must contain no plane or center of symmetry. Since most biological molecules are asymmetric, ...

We compute the proton-neutron entanglement entropy in the interacting nuclear shell model for a variety of nuclides and interactions. Some results make intuitive sense, for example that the shell structure, as governed by single-particle and monopole energies, strongly affects the energetically available space and thus the entanglement entropy. We also find a surprising result: that the entanglement entropy at low excitation energy tends to decrease for nuclides when $N \neq Z$. While we provide evidence ...

If a system of flavor-oscillating neutrinos is at high enough densities that neutrino-neutrino coherent forward scatterings are non-negligible, the system becomes a time-dependent many-body problem. An important and open question is whether the flavor evolution is sufficiently described by a mean-field approach or can be strongly affected by correlations arising from two-body interactions in the neutrino Hamiltonian, as measured by nontrivial quantum entanglement. Numerical computations of the time ...

There is increasing interest in quantum algorithms (QAs) that are based on the imaginary time evolution (ITE), a successful classical numerical approach to obtain ground states. However, most of the proposals so far require heavy postprocessing computational steps on a classical computer, such as solving linear equations. Here we provide an alternative approach to implement ITE. A key feature in our approach is the use of an orthogonal basis set: the propagated state is efficiently expressed in terms ...

Atomic nuclei are important laboratories for exploring and testing new insights into the universe, such as experiments to directly detect dark matter or explore properties of neutrinos. The targets of interest are often heavy, complex nuclei that challenge our ability to reliably model them (as well as quantify the uncertainty of those models) with classical computers. Hence there is great interest in applying quantum computation to nuclear structure for these applications. As an early step in this ...

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), a 40-kton underground liquid argon time projection chamber experiment, will be sensitive to the electron-neutrino flavor component of the burst of neutrinos expected from the next Galactic core-collapse supernova. Such an observation will bring unique insight into the astrophysics of core collapse as well as into the properties of neutrinos. The general capabilities of DUNE for neutrino detection in the relevant few- to few-tens-of-MeV neutrino energy ...
