The post-collisional stage of the Brasiliano/Pan-African Cycle in Southern Brazil is marked by metaluminous and peraluminous granites controlled by a transcurrent shear zone system. In southernmost Brazil, the sinistral, NE-trending Dorsal de Canguçu Transcurrent Shear Zone (DCTSZ) is the best known structure that conditioned these peraluminous granites. Despite its poorly-developed linear fabric, the emplacement of the NNW-elongate Butiá Granite (BG) northwest of the DCTSZ is interpreted to have ...

To clarify the pathogenesis of oral plague infection, we studied the susceptibility of three species of rodents to intragastric inoculation of Yersinia pestis, described the pathology and progression of infection, and measured antibody responses to fraction IA antigen of Y. pestis. The 50% lethal doses of bacteria by intragastric inoculation for Mus musculus, Zygodontomys pixuna, and Rattus rattus were log10 = 6.32, 5.46, and 9.62, respectively, which were at least 1,000-fold higher than the values ...

Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic and its association with severe neurological syndromes have raised worldwide concern. Despite the great clinical relevance of this infection, no vaccine or specific treatment is available and the search for antiviral compounds against ZIKV is extremely necessary. Several natural compounds, such as silymarin, exhibit antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and antiviral properties; however, the antiviral potential of this compound remains partially investigated. Therefore, the objective ...

Infection caused by Mayaro virus (MAYV) is responsible for causing acute nonspecific fever, in which the majority of patients develop incapacitating and persistent arthritis/arthralgia. Mayaro fever is a neglected and underreported disease without treatment or vaccine, which has gained attention in recent years after the competence of Aedes aegypti to transmit MAYV was observed in the laboratory, coupled with the fact that cases are being increasingly reported outside of endemic forest areas, calling ...

Background. The combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) increases the oxidative stress in HIV-infected people, which in turn favors the onset and aggravation of non-AIDS comorbidities, a common situation affecting these individuals. We aimed to evaluate the influence of cART initiation on oxidative stress parameters. This is a longitudinal study including 30 asymptomatic patients divided according to their CD4+ T cell count (G1: 500 cell/mL) before (M0) and after (M1) cART initiation. We analyzed ...

The palaeoecology of megamammals has been commonly accessed by stable isotope. Particularly in the Americas, this approach has been focusing efforts on the study of intertropical species, especially from a key paleozoogeographical region in the Late Quaternary of South America: the Brazilian Intertropical Region (BIR). Here we present an isotopic study (δ13C) conducted on bioapatite samples of Smilodon populator, Protocyon troglodytes and Arctotherium wingei from the BIR. We discuss their potential ...

ABSTRACT Background: Previous work has shown that Amazonian tropical forests have experienced two widespread changes in dynamics over recent decades, increases in both tree stem turnover and above-ground biomass. However, data from an Amazonian monodominant forest dominated by Peltogyne gracilipes have shown that the above-ground biomass of this forest type has declined slightly (<5%) over an 11-year period. Aims: To determine whether the tree communities in three types of forest, with or without ...

Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors are widely used to treat domestic sewage and frequently require post-treatment. Little is known about the use of high rate algal ponds (HRAP) for post-treating UASB reactors' effluent. This study aimed to evaluate a UASB reactor followed by a HRAP in terms of sewage treatment efficiency and biogas production, during one year at demonstration–scale. The UASB reactor co-treated raw sewage and the harvested microalgal biomass from the HRAP, which was recirculated ...

Sustainable sewage treatment plants (STPs) have been intensively investigated in search for low-cost, environmental-friendly options. Anaerobic-aerobic treatment solutions, as upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors followed by high rate algal ponds (HRAP) have already proved to be efficient for pollutants and micropollutants removal, as well as for energy recovery from the co-digestion of raw sewage and microalgal biomass. Since microalgae cells have complex structures that make them resistant ...

Eukaryotic DNA replication requires an ordered and regulated machinery to control G1/S transition. The formation of the pre‐replicative complex (pre‐RC) is a key step involved in licensing DNA for replication. Here, we identify all putative components of the full pre‐RC in the genome of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana . Different from the other eukaryotes, Arabidopsis houses in its genome two putative homologs of ORC1 , CDC6 and CDT1 . Two mRNA variants of AtORC4 subunit, with different temporal expression ...

Although melatonin exhibits oncostatic properties such as antiproliferative effects, the oral bioavailability of this hormone is less than 20%. Modified drug release systems have been used to improve the pharmacological efficiency of drugs. These systems can change the pharmacokinetics and biodistribution of the associated drugs. Long‐term ecological success of large‐scale restoration programs planned for the next decades will rely on genetic diversity (GD) of reintroduced or colonizing species, a limiting factor in highly fragmented landscapes. In small and isolated natural remnants or restoration areas, substantial reduction in population's size or connectivity may lead to local extinctions due to the accumulation of deleterious recessive alleles and ongoing reduction of fecundity, plant vigor, recruitment success, and ...

Seed dispersal, population structure and the mating system of plant species can have great consequences on the genetic structure of populations. Species of Stenostomum are small flatworms that live in freshwater and normally reproduce asexually by paratomy. They are basal in the phylogeny of Platyhelminthes.
