This study deals with birds and small mammals captured by the garden dormouse Eliomys quercinus in the orange groves of Sagunto (Valencia, E Spain). Samples come from exhaustive reviews of nest-boxes, but also of natural nests. Garden dormice predate on bird nests, containing eggs or nestlings, but also capture adults, even during the winter. Moreover, small mammals such as Mus and Crocidura were also captured, showing the abilities of this species to capture vertebrates

Abstract Soil moisture is one of the most important variables of the climate system as it constrains evapotranspiration, affecting the surface energy and water balance. It is of particular importance over transition regions between humid and dry climates as lower evapotranspiration rates lead to higher surface air temperatures thought strong soil moisture‐temperature coupling. A new and more extensive evaluation of the surface energy balance, for the Africa Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment, ...

Abstract The African continent faces several challenges and threats: high vulnerability to climate change, the fastest population increase, the lowest degree of electrification and the need for an energy transition towards renewable energies. Solar energy constitutes a viable option for addressing these issues. In a changing climate the efficient implementation of solar capacity should rely on comprehensive information about the solar resource. Here, the newest and highest resolution regional climate ...

Abstract Land‐atmosphere coupling plays a crucial role in determining the evolution of weather and climate. In the current study, the full ensemble of CORDEX‐Africa climate change simulations is used to understand how strong and weak coupling regions in Africa will evolve in the future. The ability of the regional climate models to capture the coupling signal relies on a reasonable representation of near surface air temperature, precipitation, surface fluxes, and soil moisture. A thorough model ...

Abstract Extreme precipitation events lead to dramatic impacts on society and the situation will worsen under climate change. Decision-makers need reliable estimates of future changes as a basis for effective adaptation strategies, but projections at local scale from regional climate models (RCMs) are highly uncertain. Here we exploit the km-scale convection-permitting multi-model (CPM) ensemble, generated within the FPS Convection project, to provide new understanding of the changes in local precipitation ...

Abstract As a result of warming and precipitation deficits, the increasing shortage of water resources, droughts have become one of the main drivers of desertification, land degradation and food insecurity with direct impacts on ecosystems and society, especially in fragile communities. Over the Iberian Peninsula, a known climate change hotspot, the occurrence of droughts varies in intensity and severity, being its assessment under present and future conditions an important tool for adaptation measures. ...

Droughts are a long-term weather-driven extreme event which occurs worldwide with great socio-economic impacts, namely in the Mediterranean and the Iberian regions. In a changing climate with rising temperatures, extreme events, such as droughts, are expected to increase in frequency and intensity, particularly in Mediterranean climates. In this context, the assessment of the evolution of drought in terms of its duration and intensity in the Iberian Peninsula (IP) is paramount, as it affects several ...

Education systems around the world, faces the major challenge of including all children in schools. Differentiated instruction (DI) is proposed as a pedagogical approach that support social, emotional and academic success for all students in the context of heterogeneous classrooms. Although, recent research draws the attention to the inconsistent definitions and practices of DI. In this context, this qualitative study aimed at exploring the Portuguese teachers self-reported typical DI practices in ...

Abstract The increase in computational resources has enabled the emergence of multi-model ensembles of convection-permitting regional climate model (CPRCM) simulations at very high horizontal resolutions. An example is the CORDEX Flagship Pilot Study on “Convective phenomena at high resolution over Europe and the Mediterranean”, a set of kilometre-scale simulations over an extended Alpine domain. This first-of-its-kind multi-model ensemble, forced by the ERA-Interim reanalysis, can be considered a ...

Abstract. In the recent past, an increase in computation resources led to the development of regional climate models with increasing domains and resolutions, spanning larger temporal periods. A good example is the World Climate Research Program – Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment for the European domain (EURO-CORDEX). This set of regional models encompasses the entire European continent for a 130-year common period until the end of the 21st century, while having a 12 km horizontal ...

Abstract. Over the years, higher-resolution regional climate model simulations have emerged owing to the large increase in computational resources. The 12 km resolution from the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment for the European domain (EURO-CORDEX) is a reference, which includes a larger multi-model ensemble at a continental scale while spanning at least a 130-year period. These simulations are computationally demanding but do not always reveal added value. In this study, a recently ...

Abstract In the context of the CORDEX project, an ensemble of regional climate simulations (RCMs) of high resolution on a 0.11° grid has been generated for Europe with the objective of improving the representation of regional to local‐scale atmospheric phenomena. However, such simulations are computationally expensive and do not always reveal added value. Here, a recently proposed metric (the distribution added value [DAV]) is used to determine the added value of all available EURO‐CORDEX high‐resolution ...
