Wave vector and frequency selective Brillouin light scattering (BLS) has been used to measure the wave vector make up for the dipole exchange spin wave (DESW) modes which are parametrically excited by propagating magnetostatic surface wave (MSSW) pulse signals in a long and narrow yttrium iron garnet film strip through three magnon splitting processes. The signal frequency ${f}_{s}$ was 2.65 GHz, the input pulse width was 100 ns, and the in-plane applied field was 340 Oe. In addition, time and space ...

Background: This study was designed to evaluate primarily the safety and also the efficacy of moxifloxacin (MXF) in children with complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAIs). Methods: In this multicenter, randomized, double-blind, controlled study, 451 pediatric patients aged 3 months to 17 years with cIAIs were treated with intravenous/oral MXF (N = 301) or comparator (COMP, intravenous ertapenem followed by oral amoxicillin/clavulanate; N = 150) for 5 to 14 days. Doses of MXF were selected based on ...

Elasmobranchs represent a distinct group of cartilaginous fishes that harbor a remarkable ability to heal wounds rapidly and without infection. To date very little work has addressed this phenomenon although it is suggested that antibiotic capabilities associated with epidermal surfaces may be a factor. The study of benefits derived from mutualistic interactions between unicellular and multicellular organisms is a rapidly growing area of research. Here we survey and identify bacterial associates ...

Stroma-free hemoglobin (Hb) solutions are being developed as blood substitutes. We previously described coronary vasoconstrictor activity of Hb solutions prepared by conventional methods. In the present study we assessed the constrictor activity of unmodified and covalently modified Hb solutions purified by ATP-agarose affinity chromatography. The starting material was a red cell lysate, partially purified by ultra-filtration. Coronary constrictor activity was measured as increased perfusion pressure ...

A coronary vasoconstrictor effect of human stroma-free hemoglobin (SFH) was identified in isolated rabbit hearts perfused with Krebs-Henseleit buffer or whole rabbit blood at a constant coronary flow rate. In buffer-perfused hearts, SFH in concentrations of 5 to 200 mg/dl produced dose-related increases of coronary perfusion pressure. At a concentration of 150 mg/dl, SFH, equilibrated with CO to form carboxyhemoglobin, caused an increase in perfusion pressure (55 +/- 7 mmHg), similar to that observed ...

"Stroma-free" hemoglobin solutions (SFH) cause hemodynamic alterations indicative of vasoconstriction. We studied vasoconstrictor activity in isolated rabbit hearts and rat kidneys of unmodified SFH and of SFH modified by pyridoxylation or glyoxylation, with or without glutaraldehyde cross-linking. The purity and chemical composition of the solutions, all prepared by other laboratories, were not characterized by us. In isolated hearts SFH prepared by conventional methods had potent vasoconstrictor ...

Alport syndrome (AS) is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive hematuric nephropathy with or without sensorineural hearing loss and ocular lesions. Previous studies on AS included mostly children. To determine the prognostic value of loss of staining for collagen type IV alpha 5 (COL4A5) and its relationship with the ultrastructural glomerular basement membrane alterations, we performed direct immunofluorescence using a mixture of fluorescein isothiocyanate-conjugated and Texas-red conjugated ...

In order to assess blood factors which might explain why some cigarette smokers develop airflow obstruction while others do not, we compared two groups of PiM phenotype volunteers matched for age, sex and total pack-years of cigarette smoking; one group had airflow obstruction and the other did not. Functional levels of alpha-2-macroglobulin (alpha-2-M) and alpha-1-protease inhibitor (alpha-1-PI) were separately assessed by a protease binding procedure. BACKGROUND Our purpose was to determine the diagnostic potential of a new, computerized method of interpreting transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) information by artificial neural network analysis (ANNA). This method was developed to resolve the current dilemma of visual differentiation between benign and malignant tissue on TRUS. To train and objectively evaluate ANNA, a new precise method of computerized virtual correlation of preoperative ultrasound findings and radical prostatectomy histopathology was ...

Storage of blood can depress erythrocyte 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (DPG) levels and thereby increase oxyhemoglobin affinity and potentially decrease capillary-to-tissue oxygen transport. We measured myocardial function and metabolism in isolated rabbit hearts with fixed coronary flow under basal conditions and during isoproterenol stress at 37 and 30 degrees C, comparing high and low oxyhemoglobin affinity (OHA) erythrocytes. The high OHA state resulted from standard storage conditions, which caused ...

The authors investigated what contractile force (CF) could be obtained from unconditioned latissimus dorsi muscle immediately after mobilization and for the 2 week vascular period of recovery. Latissimus dorsi muscle mobilization was performed on seven adult (4 experimental and 3 control) sheep leaving only the pedicle and the peripheral muscle intact. Telectronics stimulators (Myostim 7220; Teletronics Pacing Systems, Inc, Englewood, CO) were implanted. Immediately after mobilization 11-35% of the ...

There is scant literature describing the effect of glomerular disease on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The Cure Glomerulonephropathy study (CureGN) is an international longitudinal cohort study of children and adults with four primary glomerular diseases (minimal change disease, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, membranous nephropathy, and IgA nephropathy). HRQOL is systematically assessed using items from the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Informative System (PROMIS). We assessed ...

Glomerular diseases, including minimal change disease, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, membranous nephropathy, and immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy, share clinical presentations, yet result from multiple biological mechanisms. Challenges to identifying underlying mechanisms, biomarkers, and new therapies include the rarity of each diagnosis and slow progression, often requiring decades to measure the effectiveness of interventions to prevent end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) or death.Multicenter ...

In 1999, the first sprites were observed above European thunderstorms using sensitive cameras. Since then, Eurosprite campaigns have been conducted to observe sprites and other transient luminous events (TLEs), expanding into a network covering large parts of Europe and coastal areas. In 2009 through 2013, the number of optical observations of TLEs reached a peak of 2000 per year. Because of this unprecedented number of European observations, it was possible to construct a climatology of 8394 TLEs ...

The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is described. The detector operates at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It was conceived to study proton-proton (and lead-lead) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV (5.5 TeV nucleon-nucleon) and at luminosities up to 1034 cm−2 s−1 (1027 cm−2 s−1). At the core of the CMS detector sits a high-magnetic-field and large-bore superconducting solenoid surrounding an all-silicon pixel and strip tracker, a lead-tungstate scintillating-crystals electromagnetic ...

Six adult sheep and four newborn lambs (5 days old) were implanted with stimulator leads into the latissimus dorsi muscle and connected to a Myostim 7220 pacing system (Telectronics Pacing Systems, Inc., Englewood, CO). Electrical stimulation was started immediately after the operation. After 8 weeks of electrical stimulation, contractile force (CF) in adult sheep decreased to 76–81%, and to 78–82% in lambs. After 2 weeks' delay, CF in adults was 96–98%, and only 89–93% in lambs. After a 30 min intensive ...
