17-N-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin (17-AAG, tanespimycin) is an inhibitor of heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90), which has been studied in the treatment of cancer such as leukemia or solid tumors. Alternatively, 17-AAG may represent a promising therapeutic agent against leishmaniasis. However, the delivery of 17-AAG is difficult due to its poor aqueous solubility. For exploring the therapeutic value of 17-AAG, we developed solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) by double emulsion method. SLN exhibited ~100 ...

This study presents an inventory of the genera of Odonata found in streams and artificial farm ponds in a montane region, with temperate climate, in southern Brazil. Differences in richness of lotic and lentic environments were also investigated. The diversity of odonate families and genera in southernmost Brazil is lower than in warmer, either tropical or subtropical, regions of the country. Nine genera are new records for the region and six genera had their geographical ranges extended to regions ...

Maintenance of brain function depends on a constant blood supply. Deficits in cerebral blood flow are linked to cognitive decline, and they have detrimental effects on the outcome of ischemia. Hypertension causes alterations in cerebral artery structure and function that can impair blood flow, particularly during an ischemic insult or during periods of low arterial pressure. This review will focus on the historical discoveries, novel developments, and knowledge gaps in 1) hypertensive cerebral artery ...

Understanding connectivity patterns has implications for evolutionary and ecological processes, as well as for proper conservation strategies. This study examined population genetic structure and migration patterns of the coral Mussismilia hispida, one of the main reef builders in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. For this, 15 sites were sampled along its entire distributional range employing 10 microsatellite loci. M. hispida was divided into five genetically differentiated populations by Structure ...

Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have been applied as novel transport systems with the ability to facilitate the delivery of peptides, proteins, and oligonucleotides into cells. Herein, we designed different fusion proteins composed by pig odorant binding protein (OBP-I) and three CPPs, namely Tat, pVEC and Pep-1. A new methodology using liposomes as reservoirs and OBP:CPPs as carriers was developed as an advanced system to capture odorant molecules. 1-aminoanthracene (1-AMA) was used as a model molecule ...

The role of rice fields as refuges for wetland macroinvertebrates was assessed at multiple spatial scales, and macroinvertebrate diversity was compared between fields and natural wetlands. Because irrigated rice fields are highly disturbed environments, and have lower environmental complexity and heterogeneity in the irrigated phase than do wetlands, we hypothesised that the fields would sustain lower diversity than do wetlands, especially at broader spatial scales. Wetlands and rice fields from ...

The aim of this study is to determine the kinetics of the Acid Black 1 dye by oxidizing action of ozone and to evaluate the influence of chloride ion contamination on the dye degradation. Pseudo-first order kinetics was observed for both decolorization (620 nm) and aromatic structure (321 nm) degradations. A complete color removal was verified in 25 min ([dye]0 = 1.8 × 10-5 mol L-1), while aromatic structures degraded at slower rates. The presence of chloride ion, the principal impurity of the solid dye ...
