The synthesis and characterization of the complexes [PdX(PPh 3 )(4-MeT)]X (4-MeT = 4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazide; PPh 3 = triphenylphosphine; X = Cl, Br, I, SCN) have been described. The complexes were evaluated for in vitro activity as cytotoxic agents on tumor cells and also as cathepsin B and topoisomerase I and II inhibitors. • Cationic palladium compounds were prepared bearing thiosemicarbazide and triphenylphosphine. • The compounds were more cytotoxic than cisplatin against LM3 and MCF-7 tumor cells. • The ...

Abstract A trained sensory panel evaluated the 6 fig cultivars currently sold in the California dried fig market. The main flavor and aroma attributes determined by the sensory panel were “caramel,” “honey,” “raisin,” and “fig,” with additional aroma attributes: “common date,” “dried plum,” and “molasses.” Sensory differences were observed between dried fig cultivars. All figs were processed by 2 commercial handlers. Processing included potassium sorbate as a preservative and SO 2 application as an antibrowning ...

The present study examined the effects of aerobic training and energy restriction on adipokines levels in mesenteric (MEAT) and retroperitoneal (RPAT) white adipose tissue from obese rats. Male Wistar rats were fed with standard laboratory diet (Control group) or high fat diet (HFD). After 15 weeks, HFD rats were randomly assigned to the following groups: rats submitted to HFD, which were sedentary (sedentary HFD, n = 8) or trained (trained HFD, n = 8); or submitted to energy-restriction (ER), which were sedentary ( ...

Abstract By integrating the insights from social identity research on collective action, this article examines the social‐psychological mechanisms behind the emergence of the 2019–20 ‘ Chile despertó ’ social movement, a major Latin American revolt against the government's price hikes. Using survey data collected among Chilean activists ( N = 549) and non‐activists (i.e., members of broader society, N = 234), we analyse two major explanatory collective action frameworks: that is, the social identity model ...

In Italian society, known for the massive presence of so-called traditional families, different forms of it are nowadays spreading. The scientific and political debates on this issue are very intense and the common view of family is changing. Taking as a reference the theory of social representations and in particular the central nucleus theory, the present study aims to evoke the social representation (SR) of family in two different Italian groups: 220 young adults and 83 older adults. The SARS-CoV-2 delta (B.1.617.2) variant was first detected in England in March, 2021. It has since rapidly become the predominant lineage, owing to high transmissibility. It is suspected that the delta variant is associated with more severe disease than the previously dominant alpha (B.1.1.7) variant. We aimed to characterise the severity of the delta variant compared with the alpha variant by determining the relative risk of hospital attendance outcomes.

Photochemical isomerization of fac- to mer-[RuCl3(NO)(P–P)] was observed under white light in a CH2Cl2 solution and ...

Mitigation of SARS-CoV-2 transmission from international travel is a priority. We evaluated the effectiveness of travellers being required to quarantine for 14-days on return to England in Summer 2020. We identified 4,207 travel-related SARS-CoV-2 cases and their contacts, and identified 827 associated SARS-CoV-2 genomes. Overall, quarantine was associated with a lower rate of contacts, and the impact of quarantine was greatest in the 16-20 age-group. 186 SARS-CoV-2 genomes were sufficiently unique ...

Two novel sesquiterpene lactones were isolated from crude extract of the Eremanthus seidelii leaves. Reliable structural elucidations to these lactones were established by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques and high-resolution electrospray mass spectrometry data.

A novel copper(II) complex containing the peptide phe-leu has been prepared and characterized. The crystal structure of [Cu(phe-leu)] (1) was determined by X-ray diffraction. The presence of carboxylate and amido bridges allows the formation of an extended 2D arrangement. This structure is similar to those found in [Cu(gly-val)] · 1/2H2O (2), [Cu(val-gly)] (3), [Cu(val-phe)] (4), and [Cu(phe-phe)] (5). The magnetic properties of compounds 1–5 were studied and analyzed comparatively. The experimental data show ...
