The e-tutor plays a major role in supporting virtual collaborative learning, as he/she supervises learners in collaboratively solving tasks, acquiring new skills, and applying new knowledge. This study is aimed at gaining further insights into the daily support practices of e-tutors. Seventy-six e-tutors from 17 different European countries were invited to fill in an online questionnaire to evaluate collaborative activities, and to answer yes/no-questions regarding their intervention to support ...

Errors are an integral part of the learning process and an opportunity to increase skills and knowledge, but they are often discouraged, sanctioned and derided in the classroom. This study tests whether students' perceptions of being part of an error-friendly classroom context (i.e., a positive classroom error climate) is positively related to students' learning outcomes via students' adaptive reactions towards errors. A total of 563 Italian middle school students from 32 mathematics classes completed ...

The availability of new fAPAR satellite products requires simultaneous efforts in validation to provide users with a better comprehension of product performance and evaluation of uncertainties. This study aimed to validate three fAPAR satellite products, GEOV1, MODIS C5, and MODIS C6, against ground references to determine to what extent the GCOS requirements on accuracy (maximum 10% or 5%) can be met in a deciduous beech forest site in a gently and variably sloped mountain site. Three ground reference ...

Ceramic pigments based on the perovskite structure develop a promising red hue and furthermore present no environmental or health problems. Pigment colouring efficiency was tested in different ceramic applications, both in the body and in glazes. Final products, with variations in both maximum firing temperature and soaking time, were characterised by colorimetry. The investigation focused on the factors and mechanism influencing perovskite dissolution by calculating phase compositions of different ...

The role of calcium ions in the regulation of tissue transglutaminase is investigated by experimental approaches and computer modeling. A three‐dimensional model of the transglutaminase is computed by homology building on crystallized human factor XIII and is used to interpret structural and functional results. The molecule is a prolate ellipsoid (6.2 × 4.2 × 11 nm) and comprises four domains, assembled pairwise into N‐terminal and C‐terminal regions. The active site is hidden in a cleft between these ...

This study investigates the functionality of a Mediterranean-mountain beech forest in Central Italy using simultaneous determinations of optical measurements, carbon (C) fluxes, leaf eco-physiological and biochemical traits during two growing seasons (2014-2015). Meteorological variables showed significant differences between the two growing seasons, highlighting a heat stress coupled with a reduced water availability in mid-summer 2015. As a result, a different C sink capacity of the forest was observed ...

A real-time tracking algorithm for estimating the positions, motions and dimensions of unknown objects in image sequences is presented. Processing is based on the dynamic model of the motion imaging situation and on Kalman filter theory. Experimental results on synthetic and real images demonstrate the applicability of the algorithm to surveillance systems.

The mononuclear rearrangement of heterocycles, also called Boulton–Katritzky reaction, was studied in ionic liquid solution using N-(5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-3-yl)-N′-(4-nitrophenyl)-formamidine as substrate. The investigation was carried out using piperidine as basic catalyst and several ionic liquids differing in both cation and anion structure. Kinetic data collected were compared with the ones previously reported using (Z)-phenylhydrazone of 3-benzoyl-5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole to have information ...

Habitat use and diet of wolves Canis lupus were examined in a mountainous area in the northern Apennines (northern Italy) from December 1987 to March 1989. Wolf signs were looked for along 22 transects representative of the different habitat types of the study area in order to define seasonal differences in habitat use. Scats were collected and analysed to identify the main food items used by wolves in each season. Changes in range surface area were recorded in different seasons in relation to food ...

We investigated wolf feeding habits in relation to the abundance of wild and domestic ungulates to test the hypothesis that large prey are preferred and that their abundance affects the use of other food categories and diet breadth. We determined diet composition by scat analysis from December 1987 to December 1992. The research was carried out in three study areas located in northern Italy and characterised by marked differences in wild and domestic ungulate abundance. In study area A (low wild ...

Brain metastases (BMs) are common among patients affected by HER2+ metastatic breast cancer (>30%). The management of BMs is usually multimodal, including surgery, radiotherapy, systemic therapy and palliative care. Standard brain radiotherapy (RT) includes the use of stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) for limited disease and whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) for extensive disease. The latter is an effective palliative treatment but has a reduced effect on brain local control and BM overall survival, as it ...
