The aim of the present study was to determine seroprevalence for Toxoplasma gondii by meat juice ELISA and evaluate the presence of T. gondii and Sarcocystis spp. within host tissues by histology, PCR and in vitro isolation, in the indigenous Cornigliese sheep breed in northern Italy. Seventeen out of 24 (70.8%) sheeps were positive for T. gondii by meat juice ELISA. Twenty sheep (83.3%) were positive by PCR for T. gondii, while 24/24 sheep (100%) were positive by PCR for Sarcocystis spp. Tissues cysts ...

This study describes the development of a gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) library to identify optically active compounds in the flavour and fragrance field using enantioselective GC with cyclodextrin derivatives (CDs) as chiral selectors in combination with MS. The library operates on the "interactive" combination of linear retention indices (IT values) in parallel to MS spectra, so as to identify enantiomers reliably and to measure EE and/or ER unequivocally. Since MS is not a selective ...

Transmitted drug-resistance (TDR) remains a critical aspect for the management of HIV-1-infected individuals. Thus, studying the dynamics of TDR is crucial to optimize HIV care. In total, 4323 HIV-1 protease/reverse-transcriptase sequences from drug-naive individuals diagnosed in north and central Italy between 2000 and 2014 were analysed. TDR was evaluated over time. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic trees with bootstrap and Bayesian-probability supports defined transmission clusters. ...

The field of education has never been indifferent to the new technologies, and eventually to the Internet. Technology-Enhanced Learning, progressively, has grown to be the area for research and practice on the application of information and communication technologies to teaching and learning. In particular for the teaching activity, the numerous standard compliant Learning Object Repositories available via the Internet, and Open Educational Resources repositories, provide formidable support to teachers ...

Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) are a large and diverse group of rare and chronic respiratory disorders, with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) being the most common and best-studied member. Increasing interest in fibrosis as a therapeutic target and the appreciation that fibrotic mechanisms may be a treatable target of IPF prompted the development and subsequent approval of the antifibrotics, pirfenidone and nintedanib. The management of ILDs has changed considerably following an understanding ...

Identifying the pre-requisite relationships among learning objects is a crucial step for faculty and instructional designers when they try to adapt them for delivery in their general education distance courses. We propose a general-purpose content-based approach for facilitating this step by means of semantic analysis techniques: the learning objects are associated to WikiPedia pages (topics), and their dependency is obtained using the classification of those topics supported by Wikipedia Miner.

When teachers are surfing the Web to search suitable learning material for their courses it would be very important that web resources were characterized to restrict the scope of the search. Hence, it arises the need of finding characterizing properties for learning materials. This paper proposes an initial reflection on this issue. We exploit the huge potential of the MOOC, in particular Coursera, to discover new educational information that might characterize material of MOOCs. This goal is achieved ...

In this work we address the problem of automatically finding prerequisite relations among learning materials in order to help instructional designers to speed up the course building process. Ours is a data-driven approach, where a (machine) learner is trained to classify predecessor/successor relationships, given two didactic materials in a textual form. As the training set we use the learning materials extracted from Coursera. A first evaluation shows promising results.

Abstract Background Renal denervation (RDN) reduces the sympathetic overdrive and can optimize blood pressure control in patients with difficult-to-treat hypertension (DTH). However, a substantial proportion of patients undergoing RDN do not show a clinical response to the procedure, making it critical to identify novel and more accurate predictors. The metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy allows non-invasive assessment of sympathetic nerve activity. Yet, studies evaluating the heart and kidney ...

Objective: Renal denervation (RDN) attenuates the sympathetic nervous system overactivity that characterizes patients with elevated blood pressure (BP). Given that accurate predictors of BP response to RDN remain to be identified and that metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy allows non-invasive assessment of sympathetic nerve activity, we explored if the kidney, heart and lung MIBG uptake predict BP response to RDN. Design and method: Thirteen patients with difficult-to-treat hypertension underwent ...

The process of carefully choosing and sequencing a set of Learning Objects (LOs) to build a course may reveal to be quite a challenging task. In this work we focus on an aspect of such challenge, related to the verification and respect of the relationships of pedagogical dependence that holds between two LOs added to a course (meaning that if a given LO has another one as "pre-requisite", then any sequencing of the LOs in the course will need to have the latter LO taken by the learners before of the ...

Ruth Loos and colleagues report results of a large genome-wide association study for body mass index. They identify 18 new loci associated with this trait, some of which map near key hypothalamic regulators of energy balance. Obesity is globally prevalent and highly heritable, but its underlying genetic factors remain largely elusive. To identify genetic loci for obesity susceptibility, we examined associations between body mass index and ∼2.8 million SNPs in up to 123,865 individuals with targeted ...

The QuantiFERON CMV (QCMV) test evaluates specific adaptive immune system activity against CMV by measuring IFN-γ released by activated CD8+ T lymphocytes. We aimed to evaluate the QCMV test as a predictive tool for CMV manifestations and acute or chronic lung allograft rejection (AR and CLAD) in lung transplant (LTx) patients. A total of 73 patients were divided into four groups based on donor and recipient (D/R) serology for CMV and QCMV assay: group A low-risk for CMV infection and disease (D-/R-); ...
