David Martín Alonso, Jesse Q. Bond, Juan Carlos Serrano‐Ruiz, James A. Dumesic,

A process is described to produce renewable liquid fuels, similar to existing petroleum-derived transportation fuels, through the oligomerization over solid acid catalysts of C9-alkenes derived from γ-valerolactone (GVL). Larger, non-terminal alkenes are shown to be less reactive than short chain α-alkenes for oligomerization over solid acid sites, and Amberlyst-70 has been identified to be an active and stable catalyst with sufficient acidity to couple C9-alkenes. The inhibiting effect of water ...

We describe the cryogenic half-wave plate rotation mechanisms built for and used in Spider, a polarization-sensitive balloon-borne telescope array that observed the cosmic microwave background at 95 GHz and 150 GHz during a stratospheric balloon flight from Antarctica in January 2015. The mechanisms operate at liquid helium temperature in flight. A three-point contact design keeps the mechanical bearings relatively small but allows for a large (305 mm) diameter clear aperture. James L. Bond, Zakary A. Knutson, Andrew B. Ebert, Carlos A. Guanche,

The 23-point arthroscopic examination of the hip has been used for more than 400 arthroscopic hip procedures. It ensures that all components of the hip are carefully inspected and allows for proper documentation. It is vital that a precise knowledge of hip anatomy and common portal placement is coupled with proper patient selection, sound preoperative planning, and a consistent arthroscopic technique in order to maximize clinical outcomes. The 23-point arthroscopic examination of the hip uses 3 ...

We discuss the nature of the possible high-l excess in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy power spectrum observed by the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI). We probe the angular structure of the excess in the CBI deep fields and investigate whether it could be due to the scattering of CMB photons by hot electrons within clusters, the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. We estimate the density fluctuation parameters for amplitude, sigma_8, and shape, Gamma, from CMB primary anisotropy data and ...

Abstract We study the interaction between tax advantages for municipal bonds and the market structure of auctions for these bonds. We show that this interaction can limit a bidder’s ability to extract information rents and is a crucial determinant of state and local governments’ borrowing costs. Reduced-form estimates show that increasing the tax advantage by 3 pp lowers mean borrowing costs by 9–10$\%$. We estimate a structural auction model to measure markups and to illustrate and quantify how ...

The application of cavity‐ionizaion chambers to the standadization of 60 Co γ‐ray beams, in terms of exposure, requires that the specific ionization of air J g , be corrected for the attenuation and scatter of the incident rays by the wall, central electrode, and suporting stem of the chamber. A Monte Carlo photon–electron transport code has been developed for the purpose of calculating this correction for spherical and cylindrical chambers. The code has been applied to a spherical graphite chamber ...

Spider is a balloon-borne array of six telescopes that will observe the Cosmic Microwave Background. The 2624 antenna-coupled bolometers in the instrument will make a polarization map of the CMB with approximately one-half degree resolution at 145 GHz. Polarization modulation is achieved via a cryogenic sapphire half-wave plate (HWP) skyward of the primary optic. We have measured millimeter-wave transmission spectra of the sapphire at room and cryogenic temperatures. The spectra are consistent with ...

Chandana Ghosh, Da‐Jiang Liu, Kyle J. Schnitzenbaumer, C. J. Jenks, P. A. Thiel, James W. Evans,

Scanning tunneling microscopy experiments have previously revealed the formation of pseudomorphic starfish-shaped islands during the initial stages of Al deposition on 5-fold icosohedral Al–Cu–Fe quasicrystal surfaces. To simulate this process, we first identify appropriate 5-fold surface terminations of Al–Cu–Fe from a model for bulk structure, and construct associated potential energy surfaces for the binding of Al adatoms on these terminations. We then identify a ‘disordered-bond-network’ (DBN) ...

We report studies testing the importance of Watson–Crick hydrogen bonding, base-pair geometry, and steric effects during DNA replication in living bacterial cells. Nonpolar DNA base shape mimics of thymine and adenine (abbreviated F and Q, respectively) were introduced into Escherichia coli by insertion into a phage genome followed by transfection of the vector into bacteria. Genetic assays showed that these two base mimics were bypassed with moderate to high efficiency in the cells and with very ...

NiAl-based bond coatings for thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems containing varying amounts of Ru and Pt have been investigated. The addition of Ru to bulk NiAl has shown substantial increases in the creep strength of these aluminide materials, while Pt-modifications are known to improve the oxidation resistance of NiAl. The oxidation and interdiffusion behavior of these hybrid Ru/Pt bond coat systems are compared to conventional Pt-modified aluminide bond coats. The Ru/Pt-modified aluminide bond ...

Abstract CMB-S4—the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment—is set to significantly advance the sensitivity of CMB measurements and enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the universe. Among the science cases pursued with CMB-S4, the quest for detecting primordial gravitational waves is a central driver of the experimental design. This work details the development of a forecasting framework that includes a power-spectrum-based semianalytic projection ...
