Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a frequent neoplasm, which is usually aggressive and has unpredictable biological behavior and unfavorable prognosis. The comprehension of the molecular basis of this variability should lead to the development of targeted therapies as well as to improvements in specificity and sensitivity of diagnosis. Samples of primary OSCCs and their corresponding surgical margins were obtained from male patients during surgery and their gene expression profiles were screened ...

Abstract The binding protein (BiP) is an important component of endoplasmic reticulum stress response of cells. Despite extensive studies in cultured cells, a protective function of BiP against stress has not yet been demonstrated in whole multicellular organisms. Here, we have obtained transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv Havana) plants constitutively expressing elevated levels of BiP or its antisense cDNA to analyze the protective role of this endoplasmic reticulum lumenal stress protein ...

Dengue is a mild flu-like arboviral illness caused by dengue virus (DENV) that occurs in tropical and subtropical countries. An increasing number of reports have been indicating that dengue is also associated to neurological manifestations, however, little is known regarding the neuropathogenesis of the disease. Here, using BALB/c mice intravenously infected with DENV-2 strain 66985, we demonstrated that the virus is capable of invading and damaging the host's central nervous system (CNS). Brain and ...

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and hepatic steatosis are intertwined with insulin resistance. PPARs are at the crossroads of these pathways. This study aimed to investigate the effects of GW0742 (PPAR-beta agonist) on hepatic energy metabolism and ER stress in a murine diet-induced obesity model. HF diet caused overweight, hyperinsulinemia, hepatic inflammation (increased NF-kB, TNF-alpha, and IL-6 protein expression) and favored hepatic lipogenesis, leading to ER stress, with ultrastructural and ...

Introduction: The simultaneous presence of multiple chronic diseases in the same individual is recognized as an important public health problem. Patients with multimorbidity have greater healthcare needs, which represents a higher burden on health services. Although there is no consensual definition of this concept, multimorbidity is usually defined as the presence of two or more chronic diseases in the same patient. The existence of evidence regarding multimorbidity will lead to more efficient ...

Understanding human mobility plays a vital role in urban and environmental planning as cities continue to grow. Ubiquitous geo-location, localization technology, and availability of big-data-ready computing infrastructure have enabled the development of more sophisticated models to characterize human mobility in urban areas. In this work, our main goal is to extract spatio-temporal features that characterize user mobility and, based on the similarity of these features, identify user communities . ...

Increased worldwide travel and immigration have led to an increase in the incidence of hepatic hydatid disease outside of endemic areas. In nonendemic areas lack of familiarity with the disease may lead to a delay in diagnosis with increased risk for development of complicated disease. Complicated disease is defined as: infected cysts, cysts with a hyperechoic solid pattern or calcified walls, or cysts with biliary rupture. Over a 6-month period six patients with complicated hydatid disease were ...

Brequinar sodium (BQR) is a new immunosuppressive drug that is highly effective in preventing graft rejection in several different experimental settings, including primary allografts and xenografts. A short course of BQR treatment during the onset of allograft rejection can induce the permanent survival of liver and kidney allografts in rats. To study the molecular basis of BQR-induced prolongation of allograft survival, we analyzed the intragraft pattern of IL-1 alpha, IL-2, IL-2R, IL-4, IL-6, IL- ...

Lipid peroxidation may play a major role in the loss of liver graft viability after prolonged cold ischemia and reperfusion injury. The lazaroid compound U74006F is a potent inhibitor of lipid peroxidation, and this study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of this compound in preventing cold ischemia–reperfusion damage in three different models: pig endothelial cells in culture, ex vivo isolated pig liver perfusion and orthotopic transplantation of syngeneic rat livers. The addition of U74006F ...

A groundwater vulnerability and risk mapping assessment, based on a source–pathway–receptor approach, is presented for an urban coastal aquifer in northeastern Brazil. A modified version of the DRASTIC methodology was used to map the intrinsic and specific groundwater vulnerability of a 292 km2 study area. A fuzzy hierarchy methodology was adopted to evaluate the potential contaminant source index, including diffuse and point sources. Numerical modeling was performed for delineation of well capture ...

We have examined the nature of the binding of human xenoantibodies to pig liver and kidney vascular endothelium. Our results demonstrate that human serum contains IgM and IgG xenoantibodies that bind to pig vascular endothelium, and that the pattern of antibody binding is similar for both livers and kidneys. Immunohistochemical analysis of pig kidneys after perfusion with human blood demonstrated the binding of both IgM and IgG xenoantibodies, complement (C3), and fibrinogen to the vascular and glomerular ...

Human-to-pig xenoantibodies may constitute a major obstacle to the successful use of pigs as xenograft donors for human transplantation. Our studies demonstrate that normal human serum contains antibodies, primarily IgM, that are cytotoxic for pig aortic endothelial cells (PAECs). These antibodies bind to several antigens isolated from PAECs, lymphocytes, platelets, red blood cells, and the kidney. Absorption of human serum with pig lymphocytes removes the cytotoxic activity to PAECs and some, but ...

Abstract Culture is a complex concept and this paper is devoted to improving the safety culture in safe-critical organizations. The culture of any organization in the international nuclear industry is centered on safety. This reflects human awareness and the recognition that strict attention to safety is essential if the benefits of this form of power are to be realized. For a nuclear organization safety culture is the dominant aspect of the organizational culture. Assessing the safety culture of ...

Cytokines are thought to play an important role in the inflammatory and immune responses of allograft rejection. We evaluated the pattern of cytokine gene expression in 36 liver biopsy specimens obtained from 20 recipients of primary orthotopic liver allografts. Specific mRNA expression was identified by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using oligonucleotide primers specific for human interleukin (IL)-1 beta, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 Interferon (IFN) gamma, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and beta- ...

In this communication a bi-criterion approach for the nominal Airlines Crew Rostering Problem is developed. The nominal Crew Rostering Problem considers the assignment of the crew staff to a set of pairings covering all the scheduled flights so that operations costs are minimized while its solution must meet hard constraints resulting from the safety regulations of Civil Aviation as well as from the airlines internal agreements. Another goal is of the highest interest for airlines: since the overall ...

Biliopancreatic gallstone disorders (BPD) manifesting during pregnancy are relatively rare. The management of these conditions remains controversial. Although perioperative problems and fetal loss have been reported, recent publications have advocated an early surgical approach.Thirty-two pregnant women underwent operation for BPD between January 1993 and December 1997. The mean age was 29 years and ranged from 18 to 41 years.Twelve patients underwent a laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC), and 20 open ...
