The solubility of NaCl in water is evaluated by using three force field models: Joung-Cheatham for NaCl dissolved in two different water models (SPC/E and TIP4P/2005) and Smith Dang NaCl model in SPC/E water. The methodology based on free-energy calculations [E. Sanz and C. Vega, J. Chem. Phys. 126, 014507 (2007)] and [J. L. Aragones et al., J. Chem. Phys. 136, 244508 (2012)] has been used, except, that all calculations for the NaCl in solution were obtained by using molecular dynamics simulations with ...

Abstract Background Fatty acid synthase (FASN) is an enzyme synthesized by the liver and plays an important role in lipogenesis. The present study aimed to investigate whether serum FASN concentration may provide a direct link between HIV and/or HCV viral infections and lipid metabolic disorders commonly observed in HIV/HCV-infected patients. Methods We evaluated serum FASN concentration in 191 consecutive HIV-infected patients in the absence or presence of HCV co-infection. For comparison, 102 uninfected ...

The so-called thermodynamic anomalies of water form an integral part of the peculiar behaviour of this both important and ubiquitous molecule. In this paper our aim is to establish whether the recently proposed TIP4P/2005 model is capable of reproducing a number of these anomalies. Using molecular dynamics simulations we investigate both the maximum in density and the minimum in the isothermal compressibility along a number of isobars. It is shown that the model correctly describes the decrease ...

We report the appearance of two plastic crystal phases of water at high pressure and temperature using computer simulations. In one of them the oxygen atoms form a body centered cubic structure (bcc) and in the other they form a face centered cubic structure (fcc). In both cases the water molecules were able to rotate almost freely. We have found that the bcc plastic crystal transformed into a fcc plastic crystal via a Martensitic phase transition when heated at constant pressure. We have performed ...

A relatively simple equation of state is proposed for several forms of ice, whose parameters have been fitted to the results of extensive computer simulations using the TIP4P/Ice and TIP4P/2005 models of water. Comparison with available experimental data for ice Ih shows that both models reproduce the experimental density and isothermal compressibility to good accuracy over the entire range of thermodynamic stability except at low temperatures. The predictions for the thermal expansion coefficient ...

In Cuba, antiretroviral therapy rollout started in 2001 and antiretroviral therapy coverage has reached almost 40% since then. The objectives of this study were therefore to analyze subtype distribution, and level and patterns of drug resistance in therapy-naive HIV-1 patients. Four hundred and one plasma samples were collected from HIV-1 therapy-naive patients in 2003 and in 2007–2011. HIV-1 drug resistance genotyping was performed in the pol gene and drug resistance was interpreted according to ...

BG intersubtype recombinants represented 11.6% of HIV-1 isolates in a recent survey in Cuba based on pol sequences, most of them forming a single clade further subdivided into 3 subclades. Here, we analyze 8 near full-length genomes and 1 gag-pol sequence from epidemiologically unlinked Cuban BG recombinants from these 3 subclades (3 from each). Near full-length sequences were also obtained from 3 subtype G and 2 subtype B Cuban viruses. Phylogenetic relationships were estimated via maximum likelihood, ...

INTRODUCTION Cuba has an HIV prevalence of 0.1% in the population aged 15 to 49 years, very low despite increased incidence in recent years. In 2001, domestically-produced generic antiretroviral therapy was introduced and there has been complete coverage since 2003. In 2006, 1986 people with HIV/AIDS were receiving ART; by 2009, that figure reached 5034. Adherence to antiretroviral therapy is fundamental: nonadherence leads to treatment failure, development of resistance, progression to AIDS, and ...

Aqueous solutions of LiCl have recently received much attention in connection with the study of the anomalies of supercooled water and its polyamorphism. From the point of view of computer simulation, there is need for a force field that can reproduce the structural and dynamical properties of this solution, and more importantly it is also simple enough to use in large scale simulations of supercooled states. We study by molecular dynamics the structure of the LiCl-water solutions with the force ...

In this paper, the solubility of NaCl in water is evaluated by using computer simulations for three different force fields. The condition of chemical equilibrium (i.e., equal chemical potential of the salt in the solid and in the solution) is obtained at room temperature and pressure to determine the solubility of the salt. We used the same methodology that was described in our previous work [E. Sanz and C. Vega, J. Chem. Phys. 126, 014507 (2007)]10.1063/1.2397683 although several modifications were ...

The free energy is evaluated through the Einstein crystal/molecule methodologies using the Molecular Dynamics programs: GROMACS and LAMMPS. We describe the effect of MCP-1 deficiency in mice rendered hyperlipemic by the concomitant ablation of the LDL receptor. The MCP-1(-/-)LDLr(-/-) mice in comparison with LDLr(-/-) mice showed a decreased lipoprotein clearance, derangements in free fatty acids delivery and less glucose tolerance when fed a regular chow, and they showed a partial resistance to alterations in glucose and lipid metabolism induced by dietary fat and cholesterol. They also were less prone to the development of diet-induced ...

We tested the security and efficacy of ezetimibe in the treatment of HIV-associated dyslipemia. Twenty HIV-infected patients were randomly assigned to receive ezetimibe 10 mg/day or fluvastatin 80 mg/day. Patients receiving ezetimibe experienced a statistically significant (P = 0.003) 20% reduction in the concentration of LDL-cholesterol, similar to that observed with fluvastatin (24%, P between groups 0.70). We concluded that ezetimibe monotherapy effectively decreases LDL-cholesterol in HIV-infected ...

In recent years, the hybrid silicon-molecular electronics technology has been gaining significant attention for applications in sensors, photovoltaics, power generation, and molecular electronics devices. However, Si-H surfaces, which are the platforms on which these devices are formed, are prone to oxidation, compromising the mechanical and electronic stability of the devices. Here, we show that when hydrogen is replaced by deuterium, the Si-D surface becomes significantly more resistant to oxidation ...
