To assess helical computed tomography (CT) with contrast material administered intravenously, orally, and rectally (triple contrast helical CT)) in the prospective evaluation of stable patients with abdominal gunshot wounds in whom there is no clinical indication for immediate exploratory laparotomy. The study was conducted for 19 months. All patients met the following inclusion criteria: age of 16 years or older, hemodynamic stability, no clinical signs of peritoneal irritation, and signed consent ...

To present our experience with helical computed tomographic (CT) arteriography as the initial diagnostic examination in patients suspected to have focal arterial injuries of the proximal extremities.During 19 months, 142 arterial segments in the proximal portions of the extremities of 139 patients with trauma were evaluated with helical CT arteriography. CT arteriograms were interpreted on site by the radiologist in charge of emergency procedures and retrospectively with consensus interpretation ...

Colloid transport through porous media can be influenced by the presence of biofilms. Sterile and non-sterile sand columns were investigated using Laponite RD as model colloid and a highly mucoid strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa as model biofilm former. Laponite RD was marked specifically by fluorescent complexes with rhodamine 6G. Breakthrough curves (BTCs) were used as parameters for determination of colloid transport characteristics. In the sterile columns, the colloid was mobile (collision efficiencies ...

Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) are of fundamental importance for attachment to metal sulfides, biofilm formation and leaching efficiency of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. In this work we have visualized the capsular polysaccharides (CPS) of A. ferrooxidans ATCC 23270 using the fluorescently-labeled lectin Concanavalin A (ConA) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Ferrous iron-grown cells exhibited low amounts of CPS. A strong induction of CPS production was observed for planktonic ...

Methods The MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL databases were searched from January 1, 2010, through July 31, 2017, for studies that met the following criteria: (1) prospective studies conducted in adults, (2) with outcome data on CVD incidence and (3) a measure of ideal CVH metrics. Results Twelve ...

In this work, we show a simple way to functionalize tungsten oxide nanowires (WO3-NWs) using a saturated palladium chloride (PdCl2) solution deposited by a drop-casting method. WO3-NWs were synthesized by close-spaced chemical vapor deposition (CSVT). The morphological and structural characterizations showed that the diameters of WO3-NWs are in the range from 50 to 200 nm with lengths above 10 μm, and correspond to the orthorhombic phase of WO3, respectively. The sensor was fabricated using the WO3- ...

Abalone (Haliotis spp.) is a highly demanded product due to its quality. Although abalone production volume is not as high relative to other seafood products, it is highly valued; it amounted to nearly 2.6 billion dollars in 2017. Previously, global abalone production depended primarily on fisheries, but now days it relies mostly on aquaculture; today, over 95% of abalone production comes from aquaculture. Several factors govern the price of abalone in the international market, including production ...

First, we show protocols to produce colloidal suspensions of assembled polymer nanocomplexes by simultaneously mixing equimolar amounts of the oppositely charged polysaccharides, preventing macroprecipitation. The colloidal suspensions were then freeze-dried to form the active aerogels. Apparent density in the ...

Biomass burning emissions have a substantial impact on regional air quality and climate. The region of Amazonia in South America has long been identified as one of the largest contributors to short lived pollutants globally. However, massive natural wildfires and agricultural burns also occur every year in the grassland plains of Northern South America during the dry season (November to April). The regional-scale air quality impact of these biomass burning emissions has not been studied in depth ...

Abstract Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed neoplasm in women worldwide with a well-recognized heterogeneous pathology, classified into four molecular subtypes: Luminal A, Luminal B, HER2-enriched and Basal-like, each one with different biological and clinical characteristics. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) represent 33% of the human transcriptome and play critical roles in breast carcinogenesis, but most of their functions are still unknown. Therefore, cancer research could benefit from ...

Endocrine gland-derived vascular endothelial growth factor (EG-VEGF) was recently identified as the first tissue-specific angiogenic molecule. EG-VEGF (the gene product of PROK-1) appears to be expressed exclusively in steroid-producing organs such as the ovary, testis, adrenals and placenta. Since the human pancreatic cells retain steroidogenic activity, in the present study we ascertained whether this angiogenic factor is expressed in normal pancreas and pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Tissue samples ...

Small-scale dairy systems face reduced availability of water for irrigation of pastures and disruption in the amount or pattern of rains due to climate change, so research on alternative short-cycle rain-fed forages is needed. Abstract The phytohormone jasmonoyl-isoleucine (JA-Ile) regulates fundamental plant processes as developmental and defense responses. JA-Ile mediates the interaction between the F-box protein COI1 (part of the SCF COI1 E3 ubiquitin ligase) and a JAZ repressor leading to early jasmonate responses. The Arabidopsis JAZ1 protein contains the canonical LPIARR degron sequence, which is responsible for the stabilization of the AtCOI1-JA-Ile-AtJAZ1 complex. In strawberry ( Fragaria × ananassa ) JAZ family was described ...

Background This double-blind, randomized trial compared dural puncture epidural analgesia (DPEA) for labor using 25-gauge and 27-gauge pencil point spinal needles. We hypothesized that both needle sizes would result in similar onset time (equivalence margin=2.5 min) and therefore designed the study as an equivalence trial. Methods One hundred and forty patients undergoing labor were randomized to DPEA with 25-gauge (n=70) or 27-gauge (n=70) pencil point spinal needles. After the placement of the epidural ...

Alteration in the buffering capacity of the proteostasis network is an emerging feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), highlighting the occurrence of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. The unfolded protein response (UPR) is the main adaptive pathway to cope with protein folding stress at the ER. Skeletal muscle is a tissue that shows the most plasticity in the body; it can change in response to physiological and pathological stimuli. Among the diseases that affect skeletal muscle are myopathy-associated fibrosis, insulin resistance, and muscle atrophy. A common factor in these pathologies is the participation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). This system can be functionally separated into the classical and nonclassical RAS axis. The main components of the classical RAS pathway are angiotensin- ...
