The aim of this study is to describe the sedimentary evolution occurred during the last 200-years in the middle Capibaribe Estuary by mean of the sedimentary analysis (magnetic susceptibility, grain size, calcium carbonate, total organic matter—TOM) and geochemical parameters (sedimentation rates, heavy metal concentrations, enrichment and contamination factor) along a core. The core recorded four units and the measured sedimentation rate was 0.52 cm cm·y﹣1. The first unit, dating before 1812, showed ...

An integrated approach focused on sedimentology, geochemistry, palynology, C and N isotopes and radiocarbon dating of a sediment core from an herbaceous plain not flooded by tides of the Amapá littoral, near the Amazon River mouth, allowed identification of two phases with marine and terrestrial influences. Mangroves occurred over tidal mud flats with marine influence between > 5610–5470 and 470–310 cal yr BP. The absence of mangrove vegetation since 470–310 cal yr was followed by the transition of ...

Abstract Projections of the impacts of modern Relative Sea Level (RSL) rise on estuarine mangroves should be supported by coastal topographic data and records of mangrove dynamics under past RSL change. This work identified inland and seaward mangrove migrations along the Jucuruçu River (Bahia, Northeastern Brazil), during the Holocene based on sedimentary features, palynological and geochemical (δ 13 C, δ 15 N, C/N) data integrated with digital elevation models. During the Middle Holocene, in response ...

Abstract It is possible that climate changes and sea level fluctuations (allogenic processes) are and will cause major changes in mangrove dynamics. However, other driving forces may be significantly affecting this system. Distinguishing allogenic and autogenic influence on mangroves is a challenging question, because mechanisms related to the natural dynamics of depositional environments (autogenic processes) have strong influences on the establishment and degradation of mangroves. Thus, impacts ...

Abstract Generally, palaeoenvironmental interpretations consider only allogenic processes, when autogenic factors may have a strong influence on proxies of stratigraphic sequences. For instance, the Holocene history of the vegetation along the southern littoral of the State of Bahia in north‐eastern Brazil is characterized by mangrove dynamics controlled by allogenic processes. However, over smaller timescales (~700 years), autogenic processes may have controlled vegetation dynamics and hence observed ...

Abstract The aim of this paper is to evaluate the compatibility between the Holocene relative sea-level (RSL) curves proposed for the Brazilian littoral and mangrove dynamics along a fluvial valley in the state of southern Bahia. This was done integrating geomorphological, sedimentological, palynological, and stable isotopic data from two cores collected at the mouth of the Jucuruçu River and at a site 23 km inland, near the city of Prado, northeastern Brazil. Core PR07, sampled from a fluvial plain ...

Population dynamics and structure of young individuals of the tree Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. (Caesalpiniaceae) were studied in the gallery forest of the Panga Ecological Station, Uberlândia, MG, Brazil. Three distinct habitats were recognized in this forest, Dike, Middle and Edge zone. Four annual surveys of plant height, diameter at plant base and density were made between 1993 and 1996. The species showed an aggregated distribution in all three habitats. Population structure in all four surveys ...

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is associated with serious gynaecologic and obstetric complications. The hallmark of BV is the presence of a polymicrobial biofilm on the vaginal epithelium, but BV aetiology is still a matter of debate. We have previously developed an in vitro biofilm model that included three BV-associated species, but, up to now, no studies are available whereby more bacterial species are grown together to better mimic the in vivo situation. Herein, we characterized the first polymicrobial ...

Solar water splitting is a promising solution for the renewable production of hydrogen as an energy vector. To date, complex or patterned photoelectrodes have shown the highest water splitting efficiencies, but lack scalable routes for commercial scale-up. In this article, we report a direct and scalable chemical vapor deposition (CVD) route at atmospheric pressure, for a single step fabrication of complex nanoneedle structured WO3 photoanodes. Using a systematic approach, the nanostructure was engineered ...

Rocio virus (ROCV) caused an outbreak of human encephalitis during the 1970s in Brazil and its immunopathogenesis remains poorly understood. CC-chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) is a chemokine receptor that binds to macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP-1 α). Both molecules are associated with inflammatory cells migration during infections. In this study, we demonstrated the importance of the CCR5 and MIP-1 α, in the outcome of viral encephalitis of ROCV-infected mice. CCR5 and MIP-1 α knockout mice survived ...

A fundamental problem of analog quadrature sampling circuits is the in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) mismatch, which adversely affects their image rejection performance. This brief proposes two new quadrature sampling circuits for the sampling of complex intermediate frequency signals with high image rejection performance. The first circuit reduces the I/Q mismatches by time-sharing of the sampling capacitors and by employing a special clocking scheme. The second circuit integrates a first-order complex ...
