The extraction and preconcentration capabilities of a new extraction technique, stir bar sorptive extraction, were combined with the separation power of capillary gas chromatography (CGC) and the low limits of detection (LODs) of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) for the determination of the organotin compounds tributyltin (TBuT) and triphenyltin (TPhT) in aqueous standard solutions, harbor water, and mussels (after digestion with tetramethylammonium hydroxide). Throughout, tripropyltin ...

As mediators of intercellular communication, extracellular vesicles containing molecular cargo, such as microRNAs, are secreted by cells and taken up by recipient cells to influence their cellular phenotype and function. Here we report that cardiac stress-induced differential microRNA content, with miR-200c-3p being one of the most enriched, in cardiomyocyte-derived extracellular vesicles mediates functional cross-talk with endothelial cells. Silencing of miR-200c-3p in mice subjected to chronic ...

This paper is a research on recent studies on the importance of global supply chains from the perspective of farmers and suppliers. For the specific case of coffee in Peru, a survey model was used for assessing integration levels at the cooperatives in Quillabamba, Cusco, which revealed that the lack of alliances between first-level suppliers and farmers/cooperatives significantly affects sustainability in supply chain management. Therefore, this study proposes a strategic sourcing model where an ...

The blazar J1924-2914 is a primary Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) calibrator for the Galactic Center's black hole Sagittarius A*. Here we present the first total and linearly polarized intensity images of this source obtained with the unprecedented 20 $\mu$as resolution of the EHT. J1924-2914 is a very compact flat-spectrum radio source with strong optical variability and polarization. In April 2017 the source was observed quasi-simultaneously with the EHT (April 5-11), the Global Millimeter VLBI Array ( ...

A bstract We investigate neutrinoless double beta (0 νββ ) decay rates in minimal left-right symmetric models in presence of relatively light right-handed neutrinos. By use of an effective field theory approach, we systematically include all contributions in the model as well as the dependence of the decay amplitude on the masses of right-handed neutrinos. In type-I and type-II seesaw scenarios, we analyze the impact of right-handed neutrinos heavier than about 10 MeV, showing that this effect can ...

AmpC-β-lactamase production is an under-recognized antibiotic resistance mechanism that renders Gram-negative bacteria resistant to common β-lactam antibiotics, similar to the well-known ESBLs. For infection control purposes, it is important to be able to discriminate between plasmid-mediated AmpC (pAmpC) production and chromosomal-mediated AmpC (cAmpC) hyperproduction in Gram-negative bacteria as pAmpC requires isolation precautions to minimize the risk of horizontal gene transmission. Detecting ...

Interpretation of resolved polarized images of black holes by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) requires predictions of the polarized emission observable by an Earth-based instrument for a particular model of the black hole accretion system. Such predictions are generated by general relativistic radiative transfer (GRRT) codes, which integrate the equations of polarized radiative transfer in curved spacetime. A selection of ray-tracing GRRT codes used within the EHT collaboration is evaluated for ...

This article presents general remarks on concrete bridge inspection, taking Brazilian examples to illustrate the concepts and ideas shown in this work. Brazilian bridges have a special role in the country's viary system, permitting the circulation of products and people. Despite its importance, many Brazilian bridges are not treated correctly when affected by corrosive processes. Many of these structures are built in reinforced concrete, although steel and wood bridges are also found. This work ...

Previous epidemiological studies on health effects of radiation exposure from mobile phones have produced inconsistent results. Social hierarchies are ubiquitous in social groups such as human societies and social insect colonies; however, the factors that maintain these hierarchies are less clear. Motivated by the shared reproductive hierarchy of the ant species Harpegnathos saltator, we have developed simple compartmental nonlinear differential equations to explore how key life-history and metabolic rate parameters may impact and determine its colony size and the length of its shared hierarchy. The shape and energy of the resulting spectrum depend on the shape of the underlying electron distribution function (DF). When surrounded by a transparent emission region, black holes are expected to reveal a dark shadow caused by gravitational light bending and photon capture at the event horizon. To image and study this phenomenon, we have assembled the Event Horizon Telescope, a global very long baseline interferometry array observing at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. This allows us to reconstruct event-horizon-scale images of the supermassive black hole candidate in the center of the giant elliptical galaxy M87. We have ...

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) array that comprises millimeter- and submillimeter-wavelength telescopes separated by distances comparable to the diameter of the Earth. At a nominal operating wavelength of ~1.3 mm, EHT angular resolution (lambda/D) is ~25 micro-as, which is sufficient to resolve nearby supermassive black hole candidates on spatial and temporal scales that correspond to their event horizons. With this capability, the EHT scientific goals ...
