Breast cancer treatments can induce important cardiovascular complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate cardiac alterations after irradiation and chemotherapy in an animal model.Wistar rats were divided into three groups: Control, TC+ IR (received chemotherapy and irradiation) and IR (received only irradiation). After 5 months, echocardiography was performed, the animals were euthanized, and the left ventricle was analyzed using light microscopy techniques and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). ...

Abstract In the present study an attempt has been made to calculate the mass transfers of suspended particulate matter and associated heavy metal within the lower portion of the Paraíba do Sul River drainage basin and the contribution of its tributaries. The highest metal loads were related with the highest water flows and, consequently, with the highest suspended particulate matter loads, which increased both by surface runoff and sediment resuspension. The highest flow month for the total transported ...

This study presents heavy metal concentrations and distributions in a mangrove forest in Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro. Sediments are the main reservoir of the total metal contained in mangrove studied: 99 percent for Mn; 100 percent for Fe; 100 percent for Zn; 99 percent for Cu; 100 percent for Cr and 100 percent for Pb and Cd. Rhizophora mangle biomass contained less than 1 percent of reservoir. Within the biotic compartment, perennial tissues accounted for almost all of the metals present in biomass. ...

Sediments are important for the study of heavy metal contamination in aquatic environments, and generally reflect the overall quality of ecosystems in terms of metal pollution. It is also possible to derive information on the historical contamination of a system from the analysis of sediment cores. In the case of mercury, this technique has been successfully used in various coastal and lake areas (e.g. see Baldi & DAmato, 1986: Lacerda el al., 1991 ). Riverine inputs can affect the spatial distribution ...

Salinity is one of the most devastating abiotic stresses that limit plant growth and yield, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of foliar application of salicylic acid in mitigating the effects of salt stress on okra cultivation in a hydroponic system. The study was conducted in a greenhouse, consisting of two experiments. A completely randomized design was adopted in a split-plot scheme, with four levels of electrical conductivity of ...

Abstract Mortality from collision with vehicles is the most visible impact of road traffic on wildlife. Mortality due to roads (hereafter road‐kill) can affect the dynamic of populations of many species and can, therefore, increase the risk of local decline or extinction. This is especially true in Brazil, where plans for road network upgrading and expansion overlaps biodiversity hotspot areas, which are of high importance for global conservation. Researchers, conservationists and road planners face ...

Mercury (Hg) is a highly toxic pollutant that poses in risk several marine animals, including green turtles (Chelonia mydas). Green turtles are globally endangered sea turtle species that occurs in Brazilian coastal waters as a number of life stage classes (i.e., foraging juveniles and nesting adults). Apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA-1) is considered to be a major candidate antigen for a malaria vaccine. Previous immunoepidemiological studies of naturally acquired immunity to Plasmodium vivax AMA-1 (PvAMA-1) have shown a higher prevalence of specific antibodies to domain II (DII) of AMA-1. In the present study, we confirmed that specific antibody responses from naturally infected individuals were highly reactive to both full-length AMA-1 and DII. Also, we demonstrated a strong association between ...

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a serious public health problem, since 80% to 85% of HCV carriers develop a persistent infection that can progress into liver cirrhosis and hepatocarcinoma.
