The tachykinins substance P, neurokinin A and neurokinin B are implicated in different diseases and play an important role in neuroimmunomodulation. These peptides interact with three distinct types of tachykinin receptors termed NK1, NK2 and NK3. While most mammalian genes encoding G protein-coupling cell membrane receptors are intron-less, the three tachykinin receptors contain introns in their genomic structures. In the present study, we have identified a splice variant of the tachykinin NK2 ...

The South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens) is widely distributed along the southern Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America with a history of significant commercial exploitation. We aimed to evaluate the population genetic structure and the evolutionary history of South American sea lion along its distribution by analyses of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and 10 nuclear microsatellites loci. We analyzed 147 sequences of mtDNA control region and genotyped 111 individuals of South American sea ...

Cellular transformation and cancer progression is accompanied by changes in the metabolic landscape. Master co-regulators of metabolism orchestrate the modulation of multiple metabolic pathways through transcriptional programs, and hence constitute a probabilistically parsimonious mechanism for general metabolic rewiring. Here we show that the transcriptional co-activator peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma co-activator 1α (PGC1α) suppresses prostate cancer progression and metastasis. ...

Objetive One of the main objectives in our effort to achieve a better diagnosis of the affected population is the early identification of a subject in a cardiovascular risk situation, by managing the cardiovascular risk factors. It is also taken into account that cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of death in the developed countries. The objective of this study is to assess the control of the Cardiovascular Risk Factors in our population. Methods A descriptive transversal study was conducted ...

Objective: Cardiovascular diseases constitute the first cause of death in the majority of the developed countries. In the Basque Country, they are the first cause of death among women and the second in men, after tumours, which represents almost the 32% of deaths in 2001. Hence, the intervention in this problem being one of the priority points of our heath Plan. The aim of this study is to know the control of the Cardiovascular Risk Factors in our population. Method: A descriptive transversal study ...

Assays were performed to determine bactericidal activity as a function of time (1, 3, 5, and 7 hours) and of the concentration (1, 2, 4, and 8 MIC) of antibiotics for 2 penicillin-sensitive strains ofStreptococcus pneumoniae (MIC<0.06 mg/L), 2 strains with moderate penicillin sensitivity (MIC=0.125 mg/L) and 2 penicillin-resistant strains (MIC-2 mg/L). The beta-lactam antibiotics studied were penicillin, amoxicillin, cefotaxime, imipenem and cefpirome. Imipenem was the antibiotic with the greatest antibacterial ...

mTOR complex 1 signalling regulates polyamine metabolism and thereby promotes tumorigenesis, through regulation of the stability of a key enzyme, AMD1. The mTOR pathway regulates multiple metabolic pathways in cancers but knowledge of how oncogenic signals regulate polyamine production, which is important in spreading cancer cells, is limited. Arkaitz Carracedo and colleagues add to the existing knowledge. Using a mixture of metabolic analysis techniques, they show that mTOR signalling regulates ...

Prostate cancer is among the most frequent cancers in men, and despite its high rate of cure, the high number of cases results in an elevated mortality worldwide. Importantly, prostate cancer incidence is dramatically increasing in western societies in the past decades, suggesting that this type of tumor is exquisitely sensitive to lifestyle changes. Prostate cancer frequently exhibits alterations in the PTEN gene (inactivating mutations or gene deletions) or at the protein level (reduced protein ...

Three out of six Poloidal Field Coils (PFC) are already delivered to the ITER Organization. The PF Coils are built winding, impregnating, and vertically stacking double pancakes (DPs) of NbTi Cable-in-Conduit conductors into a Winding Pack (WP). Later, the Winding Pack (WP) is impregnated for ground insulation and clamping devices are installed for structural support and interface with the rest of the ITER machine. One of the main parameters characterizing the PFCs is the Current Centre Line (CCL), defined ...

'Rewilding' is a nature conservation strategy gaining prominence worldwide. Established in the Northern Hemisphere, rewilding initiatives have increasingly been proposed in Argentina, but their relative merits, feasibility of implementation and accountability have lacked adequate analysis and discussion. Recently, 125 scientists and practitioners wrote an article to assess the justification and methods of current rewilding initiatives in Argentina. Rather than engaging in a constructive debate with ...

Commerson’s dolphins ( Cephalorhynchus commersonii ) are separated into the subspecies C. c. commersonii , found along southern South America (SA) and the Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas (FI/IM), and C. c. kerguelenensis , restricted to the subantarctic Kerguelen Islands (KI). Following the dispersal model proposed for the genus, the latter is thought to have originated from SA after a long-distance dispersal event. To evaluate this biogeographic scenario, a distribution-wide, balanced sampling of mitochondrial ...
