Non-melanoma skin cancers have the highest incidence of all malignancies worldwide. However, cancer registries rarely include data on non-melanoma skin cancers because they tend to be under-reported. To determine incidence rates and changes over time for non-melanoma skin cancers in a mid-sized Brazilian population. We calculated age-standardized rates, adjusted to the world population using the direct method, from 1996-2012 in the Aracaju Cancer Registry and then calculated incidence trends using ...

Abstract Aim There is little consensus on which environmental variables are best at predicting multiple dimensions of diversity. We ask whether there are common environmental correlates of diversity, despite ecological differences, across nine clades of plants and animals distributed along a single rainforest domain. For that, we compare the environmental correlates of species richness, phylogenetic diversity, and phylogenetic endemism. Location Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Taxon: Five clades of plants ( ...

This paper deals with problems on non-oriented edge-colored graphs. The aim is to find a route between two given vertices s and t. This route can be a walk, a trail or a path. Each time a vertex is crossed by a walk there is an associated non-negative reload cost ri,j, where i and j denote, respectively, the colors of successive edges in this walk. The goal is to find a route whose total reload cost is minimum. Polynomial algorithms and proofs of NP-hardness are given for particular cases: when ...

Latin America faces unique challenges in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The Asociación Latinoamericana de Diabetes (Latin American Diabetes Association, ALAD) brought together medical associations in 17 countries in Latin America to produce a consensus statement regarding the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The goal of the document is to provide practical recommendations that will guide clinicians through a simple decision-making process for managing patients. The cornerstone elements for ...

We deal with different algorithmic questions regarding properly arc-colored s–t trails, paths and circuits in arc-colored digraphs. Given an arc-colored digraph Dc with c≥2 colors, we show that the problem of determining the maximum number of arc disjoint properly arc-colored s–t trails can be solved in polynomial time. Surprisingly, we prove that the determination of a properly arc-colored s–t path is NP-complete even for planar digraphs containing no properly arc-colored circuits and c=Ω(n), where ...

The coupling between different types of surface (tropical forest or grass) and the Convective Boundary Layer (CBL) has been investigated using observational (rawinsoundings) data collected over Rondônia in southwest Amazonia. The data reported here support the notion that deforestation may modify the dynamics of the boundary layer, in particular during the dry season. In this period the sensible heat fluxes are very high over pasture, creating a CBL around 550 m deeper compared to that over the forest. ...

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with low bone mineral density (BMD). In this study, the association between disease severity and BMD in patients with IBD was evaluated. Associations between BMD and the Montreal classification, disease activity and drug therapy were also tested. A cross-sectional prevalence study with a comparison group was conducted. One hundred and twenty-eight patients were evaluated: 68 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), and 60 with Crohn's disease (CD). The control ...

The molecular bases for the symbiosis of the amphibian skin microbiome with its host are poorly understood. Here, we used the odor-producer Pseudomonas sp. MPFS and the treefrog Boana prasina as a model to explore bacterial genome determinants and the resulting mechanisms facilitating symbiosis. Pseudomonas sp. MPFS and its closest relatives, within a new clade of the P. fluoresens Group, have large genomes and were isolated from fishes and plants, suggesting environmental plasticity. We annotated ...

Species in the genus Gracilaria that display conspicuously flattened vegetative morphologies are a taxonomically challenging group of marine benthic red algae. This is a result of their species richness, morphological similarity, and broad phenotypic plasticity. Within this group, the Gracilaria domingensis complex is one of the most common, conspicuous, and morphologically variable species along the tropical western Atlantic Ocean. Previous research has identified that members of this complex belong ...

Green tree frogs of the genus Aplastodiscus occur in the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes of South America. The genus comprises 15 medium-sized species placed in three species groups diagnosed mainly by cloacal morphology. A phylogenetic analysis was conducted to: (1) test the monophyly of these species groups; (2) explore the phylogenetic relationships among putative species; and (3) investigate species boundaries. The dataset included eight mitochondrial and nuclear gene fragments for up to 6642 ...

Janzen's hypothesis (JH) posits that low thermal variation selects for narrow physiological tolerances, and thus small species distributional ranges and high species turnover along tropical elevational gradients. Although this hypothesis has been intensely revisited, it does not explain how many tropical species may exhibit broad distributions, encompassing altitudinal gradients. Moreover, the physiological responses of tropical species remain largely unknown, limiting our understanding on how they ...

Abstract There is growing interest in understanding human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and related disease among men. To date there have been numerous studies reporting HPV DNA prevalence among men from several different countries, however, few have incorporated multivariable analyses to determine factors independently associated with male HPV detection. The purpose of this study was to assess the factors independently associated with HPV detection in men ages 18–70 years residing in Brazil (n = 343), ...

Unfortunately, little is known regarding male HPV type distribution by age and across countries. In samples combined from the coronal sulcus, glans penis, shaft, and scrotum of 1,160 men from Brazil, Mexico, and the United States, overall HPV prevalence was 65.2%, with 12.0% oncogenic types only, 20.7% nononcogenic types only, 17. ...

Mycetoma is a chronic, subcutaneous infection caused by traumatic inoculation through the skin of some types of filamentous aerobic bacteria (actinomycetoma) and true fungi (eumycetoma) (1, 2). It is considered a neglected disease with high morbidity and major effects on the patient’s quality of life (1–3). Few published cases have examined mycetoma during pregnancy (4–7). We report here a case of a patient with eumycetoma on her foot that exhibited significant clinical worsening during pregnancy, which ...

As a result of increasing use of bone marrow transplantation and new cytotoxic chemotherapy, more patients have become susceptible to sinus disease caused by unusual organisms. Sinusitis caused by fungi and gram-negative bacteria can be difficult to treat, may lead to severe complications, and should be managed promptly in the bone marrow transplant patient. Here we present the results of 41 cultures of the paranasal sinuses obtained from 18 bone marrow transplant patients in whom sinusitis developed. ...
