In the Amazon region of northern Brazil, Panicum maximum cultivars Mombaça, Tanzânia, and Massai cause severe colic and death in horses and mules. The disease occurs in the rainy season, when sprouting pastures are grazed by equidae. In the 8 separate disease outbreaks studied, a total of 52 out of 153 equidae were affected, including 19 that died (10 mules and 9 horses). Clinical signs were colic and abdominal dilatation, with a clinical manifestation period of 12 hr to 4 days. Serum activities ...

Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy is based on the use of specific light parameters to promote tissue repair. Although demonstrated in different cell models and tissues, the mechanism by which photobiomodulation operates is not well understood. Previous studies suggested that the cell proliferation enhancement triggered by red and near-infrared PBM involves the activation of the mitochondrial respiratory chain enzyme cytochrome c oxidase (CCO). It was suggested that light in this range would displace ...

Measuring skin temperature (TSK) provides important information about the complex thermal control system and could be interesting when carrying out studies about thermoregulation. The most common method to record TSK involves thermocouples at specific locations; however, the use of infrared thermal imaging (IRT) has increased. The two methods use different physical processes to measure TSK, and each has advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare the mean skin ...

The use of multiphase machines has become a suitable choice in high-performance industry applications through advantages such as lesser torque ripple, enhanced current distribution per phase, and fault-tolerance capability. Among different control approaches for the regulation of multiphase drives, model-based predictive current control (MPCC) is one of the most analyzed strategies due to its adaptability and good dynamic response. However, this approach presents some disadvantages, e.g., high $x- ...

Public health policies to contain the spread of COVID-19 rely mainly on non-pharmacological measures. Those measures, especially social distancing, are a challenge for developing countries, such as Brazil. In São Paulo, the most populous state in Brazil (45 million inhabitants), most COVID-19 cases up to April 18th were reported in the Capital and metropolitan area. However, the inner municipalities, where 20 million people live, are also at risk. As governmental authorities discuss the loosening ...
