A novel technique for implementing the dynamically vari- able delay system, required for electronic sector scanning in ultrasound phased-array imaging equipments, has been recently introduced. The technique is based on separate and independent processing of the car- rier and of the envelope of the echo pulses. Carrier phasing is accom- plished by electronic phase-shifters, while envelope delay is varied by delay lines. This latter function, however, can be performed using dw Crete delays in increments ...

Abstract Broadleaved forest is one of the most severely exploited and threatened ecosystems worldwide such that many authors have highlighted the scarcity of undisturbed old‐growth broadleaved forests, especially in southern Europe. From an ecological perspective, old‐growth forests are considered to be significant for their structural diversity and complex ecological relationships among species. In this paper, we compare ground measurements of leaf area index (LAI) and the remotely sensed normalized ...

The plasma membrane must be rigid to form a barrier between the cell interior and the extracellular milieu, while remaining sufficiently flexible to enable rapid changes in cell shape. The concept of the plasma membrane as a mosaic of microdomains can help to understand this combination of properties. A recent report shows that the polarization of cholesterol-enriched domains changes the viscoelastic properties of the membrane at the front of moving cells, permitting efficient formation of the actin ...

A broad array of biological responses, including cell polarization, movement, immune and inflammatory responses, and prevention of HIV-1 infection, are triggered by the chemokines, a family of structurally related chemoattractant proteins that bind to specific seven-transmembrane receptors linked to G proteins. Here we discuss one of the early signaling pathways activated by chemokines, the JAK/STAT pathway. Through this pathway, and possibly in conjunction with other signaling pathways, the chemokines ...

Redistribution of specialized molecules in migrating cells develops asymmetry between two opposite cell poles, the leading edge and the uropod. We show that acquisition of a motile phenotype in T lymphocytes results in the asymmetric redistribution of ganglioside GM3- and GM1-enriched raft domains to the leading edge and to the uropod, respectively. This segregation to each cell pole parallels the specific redistribution of membrane proteins associated to each raft subfraction. Our data suggest ...

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a rare and severe condition that follows benign COVID-19. We report autosomal recessive deficiencies of OAS1 , OAS2 , or RNASEL in five unrelated children with MIS-C. The cytosolic double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)–sensing OAS1 and OAS2 generate 2′-5′-linked oligoadenylates (2-5A) that activate the single-stranded RNA–degrading ribonuclease L (RNase L). Monocytic cell lines and primary myeloid cells with OAS1, OAS2, or RNase L deficiencies produce excessive ...

The regulation of nutrient homeostasis, i.e., the ability to transition between fasted and fed states, is fundamental in maintaining health. Since food is typically consumed over limited (anabolic) periods, dietary components must be processed and stored to counterbalance the catabolic stress that occurs between meals. Herein, we contrast tissue- and pathway-specific metabolic activity in fasted and fed states. We demonstrate that knowledge of biochemical kinetics that is obtained from opposite ends ...

A general nonaqueous route has been applied for the preparation of lanthanide ordered nanocrystalline hybrid structures. In a simple one-pot reaction process, Ln(III) isopropoxides (Ln = Gd, Sm, Nd) were dissolved in benzyl alcohol and reacted in an autoclave between 250 and 300 °C. This approach leads to crystalline lanthanide oxide layers regularly separated from each other by organic layers of intercalated benzoate molecules. They display good thermal stability for temperature up to 400 °C. The gadolinium- ...

Throughout evolution, organisms have developed immune-surveillance networks to protect themselves from potential pathogens. At the cellular level, the signalling events that regulate these defensive responses take place in membrane rafts — dynamic microdomains that are enriched in cholesterol and glycosphingolipids — that facilitate many protein–protein and lipid–protein interactions at the cell surface. Pathogens have evolved many strategies to ensure their own survival and to evade the host immune ...

A new analogue frequency synthesiser is introduced and experimentally demonstrated. It is based on a tapped delay line driven by a sinusoidal waveform, which provides analogue sinusoidal samples permanently stored at the output of the individual taps, thus operating as an analogue r.o.m. Frequency synthesis is accomplished by selectively reading-out these sinusoidal samples at a fixed clock rate through an analogue multiplexer. This system represents the analogue counterpart of a digital frequency ...

A nonlinear acoustic tapped delay line is shown to be capable of providing signal processing at baseband data format via a classical amplitude-modulation/demodulation process; compatibility with baseband-operating analogue/digital arithmetic units is simply and directly achieved, thus resulting in a potentially attractive alternative to existing techniques for programmable transversal filtering implementation.

Human amygdalar activation has been reported during facial emotion recognition (FER) studies, mostly using fast temporal resolution techniques (fMRI, H215O PET or MEG). The 18FDG PET technique has never been previously applied to FER studies. We decided to test whether amygdala response during FER tasks could be assessed with this technique. The study was conducted in 10 healthy right-handed volunteers who underwent two scans on different days in random order. Content of the tasks was either emotional ( ...

Failure criteria based on ductility associated with triaxiality are often used to define the strength of metal alloys as a function of the load modalities. However a discussion of the results with regards to the microstructural evolution and the behavior of the different phases is still not investigated, especially in multi-phase alloys. In this paper a ductile failure criterion was calibrated on α/β titanium alloy (Ti–6Al–4V). The applied approach is based on different experimental tests supported ...

MCF-7 cells migrate through vitronectin-coated filters in response to insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I); migration is inhibited by the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitor BB-94, but not by the serine proteinase inhibitor aprotinin. MMP-9 was identified in the conditioned medium of MCF-7 cells; in addition, fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis revealed its presence on the cell surface, where MMP-9 activity was also found using a specific fluorogenic peptide. Furthermore, the messenger ...
