Plant distribution among substrates and its reproductive correlates are examined for Viola cazorlensis, a reputedly chasmophilous species, in two populations of the Sierra de Cazorla (Jaen province, southeastern Spain). The species was not confined to rocky substrates. For the two populations combined, 40% of the plants were rooted in the ground (sandy soils), 39% in large, nearly horizontal rocks, and 21 % in cliffs. All reproductive aspects examined exhibited significant differences between substrates. ...

Information Retrieval Systems (IRSs) based on an ordinal fuzzy linguistic approach present some problems of loss of information and lack of precision when working with discrete linguistic expression domains or when applying approximation operations in the symbolic aggregation methods. In this paper, we present a new IRS model based on the 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic approach, which allows us to overcome the problems of ordinal fuzzy linguistic IRSs and improve their performance.

The forkhead box (Fox) genes encode transcription factors that control several key aspects of development. Present in the ancestor of all eukaryotes, Fox genes underwent several duplications followed by loss and diversification events that gave rise to the current 25 families. However, few Fox members have been identified from the Lophotrochozoa clade, and specifically from planarians, which are a unique model for understanding development, due to the striking plasticity of the adult. The aim of ...

Environmental heterogeneity has been often suggested as a major driving force preserving genetic variation in clonal microorganisms. This study examines this hypothesis for the specialized nectar-dwelling, clonal yeast Metschnikowia reukaufii (Ascomycota,Saccharomycetales). We examined whether M. reukaufii subpopulations associated with flowers of different host plant species, and different individuals of the same host species, differed in genetic characteristics. Amplified fragment length polymorphisms ( ...

Through their effects on physicochemical features of floral nectar, nectar-dwelling yeasts can alter pollinator behavior, but the effect of such changes on pollination success and plant reproduction is unknown. We present results of experiments testing the effects of nectar yeasts on foraging patterns of captive and free-ranging bumble bees, and also on pollination success and fecundity of the early-blooming, bumble bee-pollinated Helleborus foetidus (Ranunculaceae). Under controlled experimental ...

Abstract In addition to genetic differences between individuals as a result of nucleotide sequence variation, epigenetic changes that occur as a result of DNA methylation may also contribute to population niche width by enhancing phenotypic plasticity, although this intriguing possibility remains essentially untested. Using the nectar‐living yeast Metschnikowia reukaufii as study subject, we examine the hypothesis that changes in genome‐wide DNA methylation patterns underlie the ability of this ...

Vast amounts of effort have been devoted to investigate patterns of genetic diversity and structuring in plants and animals, but similar information is scarce for organisms of other kingdoms. The study of the genetic structure of natural populations of wild yeasts can provide insights into the ecological and genetic correlates of clonality, and into the generality of recent hypotheses postulating that microbial populations lack the potential for genetic divergence and allopatric speciation. Ninety- ...

Yeasts are ubiquitous in terrestrial and aquatic microbiota, yet their ecological functionality remains relatively unexplored in comparison with other micro-organisms. This paper formulates and tests the novel hypothesis that heat produced by the sugar catabolism of yeast populations inhabiting floral nectar can increase the temperature of floral nectar and, more generally, modify the within-flower thermal microenvironment. Two field experiments were designed to test this hypothesis for the winter- ...

Worm meal obtained from worms (Eisenia fetida) raised on waste materials was evaluated for Rainbow trout as a replacement for fish meal at dietary concentrations of 250, 500 and 1 000 g replaced per kg. During the study period none of the diets was detrimental to fish health. The dietary concentrations of 250 and 500 g/kg replacement gave higher growth rates than that of the control group (0 g/kg replacement), the former having consumed less food. The biological parameters of food conversion efficiency ...

Abstract A new family of naphthalimide‐fused thienopyrazine derivatives for ambipolar charge transport in organic field‐effect transistors is presented. Their electronic and molecular structures were elucidated through optical and vibrational spectroscopy aided by DFT calculations. The results indicate that these compounds have completely planar molecular skeletons which promote good film crystallinity and low reorganization energies for both electron and hole transport. Their performance in organic ...
