This study evaluated, in vivo, the efficacy of a denture glazing material (Palaseal) in modifying plaque colonization of dentures. Ten subjects were selected and received maxillary temporary partial removable dentures, with complete acrylic palatal coverage. The right half of the fitting surface of the denture bases were glazed with Palaseal, whereas the other half was not glazed. One month after insertion, two fragments of the resin base of all dentures were removed (one from the glazed side and ...

The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of the 4 gene transcripts, steroidogenic factors 1 (SF-1) and 2 (SF-2), steroidogenic acute regulatory (StAR), and cytochrome P450 11A1, involved in the synthesis of steroid hormones in normal human pancreas.Total RNA was extracted from normal male (n = 5) and female (n = 5) samples, obtained from the organ donor program. The expression levels of SF-1, SF-2, StAR protein, and P450scc were assessed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and ...

This study aimed to investigate the performance on pair-matching tasks in children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type I (SMA-I) and the relationship between this performance and motor function, functional independence and quality of life. SMA-I (n = 12; 6.0 ± 2.3 yrs; 9 boys, 3 girls) and control sex-, age-matched children (n = 12; 6.2 ± 2.6 yrs) performed four pair-matching figure, number and letter tasks. The eye tracker detected eye movements. SMA-I children were assessed with CHOP INTEND, Pediatric Evaluation ...

This paper presents a review of eye gaze tracking technology and focuses on recent advancements that might facilitate its use in general computer applications. Early eye gaze tracking devices were appropriate for scientific exploration in controlled environments. Although it has been thought for long that they have the potential to become important computer input devices as well, the technology still lacks important usability requirements that hinders its applicability. We present a detailed description ...

Image stabilization can be used as front-end system for many tasks that require dynamic image analysis, such as navigation and tracking of independently moving objects from a moving platform. We present a fast and robust electronic digital image stabilization system that can handle large image displacements based on a two-dimensional feature-based multi-resolution motion estimation technique. The method tracks a small set of features and estimates the movement of the camera between consecutive frames. ...

This study evaluated the fracture strength of teeth restored with bonded ceramic inlays and overlays compared to sound teeth. Thirty sound human maxillary premolars were assigned to 3 groups: 1- sound/unprepared (control); 2- inlays and 3- overlays. The inlay cavity design was Class II MOD preparation with an occlusal width of 1/2 of the intercuspal distance. The overlay cavity design was similar to that of the inlay group, except for buccal and palatal cusp coverage The inlay and overlay groups ...

Automated virtual camera control has been widely used in animation and interactive virtual environments. We have developed a multiple sparse camera based free view video system prototype that allows users to control the position and orientation of a virtual camera, enabling the observation of a real scene in three dimensions (3D) from any desired viewpoint. Automatic camera control can be activated to follow selected objects by the user. Our method combines a simple geometric model of the scene composed ...

Identifying all analytes in a natural product is a daunting challenge, even if fractionated by volatility. In this study, comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC×GC-MS) was used to investigate relative distribution of volatiles in green, pu-erh tea from leaves collected at two different elevations (1162 m and 1651 m). A total of 317 high and 280 low elevation compounds were detected, many of them known to have sensory and health beneficial properties. The samples were ...

Abstract Every year individuals experience symptoms that remain undiagnosed by healthcare providers. In the United States, these rare diseases are defined as a condition that affects fewer than 200,000 individuals. However, there are an estimated 7000 rare diseases, and there are an estimated 25–30 million Americans in total (7.6–9.2% of the population as of 2018) affected by such disorders. The NIH Common Fund Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN) seeks to provide diagnoses for individuals with undiagnosed ...

The simultaneous classification of the three most basic eye-movement patterns is known as the ternary eye-movement classification problem (3EMCP). Dynamic, interactive real-time applications that must instantly adjust or respond to certain eye behaviors would highly benefit from accurate, robust, fast, and low-latency classification methods. Recent developments based on 1D-CNN-BiLSTM and TCN architectures have demonstrated to be more accurate and robust than previous solutions, but solely considering ...

Recently, deep learning approaches have been proposed to detect eye movements such as fixations, saccades, and smooth pursuits from eye tracking data. These are end-to-end methods that have shown to surpass traditional ones, requiring no ad hoc parameters. In this work we propose the use of temporal convolutional networks (TCNs) for automated eye movement classification and investigate the influence of feature space, scale, and context window sizes on the classification results. We evaluated the ...

Macro-electrophoretic applications of the cellular neurotoxin ibotenic acid into the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMH) resulted in hyperphagia and obesity in male rats. Histological examination showed a reduction in the number of neuronal VMH cell bodies with glial proliferation without evidence of non-specific damage. This supports the hypothesis that hyperphagia and obesity after VMH lesions are related to destruction of neurons intrinsic to the VMH.

Climate variability and change are some of the most pressing environmental challenges in semi-arid Kenya and Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) and are associated with persistent droughts, dry spells and erratic rains. The present study aimed at determining exposure and adaptation mechanisms among selected small-scale farmers cultivating drought tolerant crops in Wote, Makueni County, Eastern Kenya in the period 2003 to 2013. Second order polynomials are commonly used for estimating the point-of-gaze in head-mounted eye trackers. Studies in remote (desktop) eye trackers show that although some non-standard 3rd order polynomial models could provide better accuracy, high-order polynomials do not necessarily provide better results. Different than remote setups though, where gaze is estimated over a relatively narrow field-of-view surface (e.g. less than 30x20 degrees on typical computer displays), head-mounted gaze trackers ( ...

Neodymium is a particularly important mineral among rare earth elements (REE) and is used in NdFeB magnets in many motors and electronic devices. In recent years, by the extremely rapid growth in the demand for neodymium, many substance flow analysis (SFA) studies have been conducted to evaluate the global flow and stock of neodymium and to analyze its recycling potential. However, illegal mining, unknown trading and end-of-life (EOL) based recycle of mineral resources such as REE cannot be quantitatively ...

Visualization of quantum interference patterns has been obtained within a quantum point contact using scanning gate microscopy.
