The incidence and prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) are increasing worldwide, and the resulting cardiac complications are the leading cause of death. Among these complications is diabetes-induced cardiomyopathy (DCM), which is the consequence of a pro-inflammatory condition, oxidative stress and fibrosis caused by hyperglycemia. Cardiac remodeling will lead to an imbalance in cell survival and death, which can promote cardiac dysfunction. Since the conventional treatment of DM generally does not ...

The effects of the Plectranthus barbatus essential oil (PBEO) at concentrations ranging form 1 to 300 microg/mL and some major constituents, i. e., alpha-pinene, myrcene and caryophyllene in the ratio and amount found in the oil, were studied on the contractility of the guinea-pig ileum. PBEO decreased the basal tonus of the ileum with a maximal response (R (max); % of K (+)-contraction) of 62.7 +/- 3.8 % compared with 36.6 +/- 4.5 % inhibition achieved with alpha-pinene and 68 +/- 2.6 % with papaverine. Sixty-three Escherichia coli strains isolated from broilers with respiratory problems were examined for virulence factors, hemolysin synthesis ability, motility, hemagglutination capacity, operon pap presence, colicin production, and serum resistance. The capacity to hemagglutinate guinea pig erythrocytes was found in 53 (84.1%) of the samples, but only 30 (47.6%) agglutinated chicken erythrocytes. D-mannose-sensitive hemagglutination against guinea pig erythrocytes was found in 19 (30.2%) samples ...

In this paper, a new hysteresis model based on the limiting loop proximity (L2P) approach is proposed to describe this phenomenon in the strain (ε)–temperature (T) characteristics of shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators including major and minor loops. In order to validate the proposed model, an experimental set-up was especially designed and implemented aim at to determine the ε–T behavior of Ni-Ti SMA wire actuators under constant loads. The obtained results for ε–T loops are presented together with ...

Middle to Late Holocene barriers are conspicuous landforms in southeastern and southern Brazilian regions. The barriers in the coastal zones of northern Santa Catarina, Paraná and São Paulo states (27°19′–24°00′S) are formed mainly by beach ridge alignments and many barriers present foredune and blowout alignments in their seaward portion. The development of these eolian landforms appears to record a regional shift in coastal dynamics and barrier building. In this context, the Ilha Comprida barrier ...
