Glioblastoma is a lethal brain tumor that exhibits heterogeneity and resistance to therapy. Our understanding of tumor homeostasis is limited by a lack of genetic tools to selectively identify tumor states and fate transitions. Here, we use glioblastoma subtype signatures to construct synthetic genetic tracing cassettes and investigate tumor heterogeneity at cellular and molecular levels,

A heterogeneous group of 159 tumours was studied for the presence of S-100 protein by the immunoperoxidase technique in order to determine whether this marker may be of value in facilitating immunocytochemical diagnosis. Among cases of melanocytic and pigmented lesions, S-100 was widely distributed and demonstrated the strongest degrees of reactivity. S-100 protein was identified in virtually all nerve sheath tumours such as schwannomas, neurofibromas, myxoid sheath nerve tumour and also in some ...

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of allelic loss in chromosomal regions previously described as exhibiting loss of heterozigosity (LOH) during breast carcinogenesis, in pleural effusions of breast cancer patients. LOH was analyzed in three loci (1p32, 7q31, and 17q21). We studied 41 samples of pleural effusions from breast cancer patients (24 positive for neoplastic cells, 14 suspected, and 3 negative cases) and breast tissues from the patients (primary tumors and nonneoplastic ...

Abstract In tropical montane forests, soil properties change with increasing altitude, and tree‐growth decreases. In a tropical montane forest in Ecuador, we determined soil and tree properties along an altitudinal transect between 1960 and 2450 m asl. In different vegetation units, all horizons of three replicate profiles at each of eight sites were sampled and height, basal area, and diameter growth of trees were recorded. We determined pH and total concentrations of Al, C, Ca, K, Mg, Mn, N, Na, ...

In the literature, it is well documented that there are systematic changes in soil properties and thus in soil fertility along altitudinal gradients in tropical mountains (e.g., Marrs et al. 1988; Grieve et al. 1990; Schrumpf et al. 2001). Grieve et al. (1990) reported increasing soil organic matter concentrations along an altitudinal transect from 100 m to 2600 m a.s.l. in Costa Rica. Furthermore, it has been reported for several forests that C/N ratios increase with increasing altitude (Edwards and ...

Several insect taxa have evolved symbioses with actinobacteria that protect the host or its nutritional resources against pathogens. Digger wasps of the genus Philanthus ('beewolves'; Hymenoptera, Crabronidae) cultivate 'Candidatus Streptomyces philanthi' (Ca. S. philanthi) in specialized antennal glands and transfer them to subterranean brood cells, where the symbionts provide protection for the beewolf larva against pathogens by producing a cocktail of antibiotic substances. Abstract Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is an inherited disorder caused by a deficiency of the branched‐chain α‐keto acid dehydrogenase complex activity. In the present study we evaluated selenium levels in plasma from MSUD patients at diagnosis and under treatment and the activities of glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase in erythrocytes from treated patients. We verified that MSUD patients present a significant selenium deficiency at diagnosis, which becomes more pronounced ...

Abstract Tectonic reconstructions made across the southern South Atlantic Ocean indicate a diversity of rift and drift basin characteristics on the conjugate margins that define them as different stratigraphic and structural entities. In terms of petroleum systems, the basins are not as unlike as some characteristics suggest. Photophysical and photochemical properties of the dye resazurin were measured. The quantum yields of fluorescence and triplet formation were determined to be 0.10±0.01 and 0.2, respectively. The lifetimes of the singlet and triplet states are 1.2 ns and 30 μs. In the presence of aliphatic amines, resazurin is readily photoreduced to resorufin. This reaction proceeds through the triplet state and is inhibited by the presence of oxygen.

The mouse is integral to our understanding of hematopoietic biology. Serving as a mammalian model system, the mouse has allowed for the discovery of self-renewing multipotent stem cells, provided functional assays to establish hematopoietic stem cell identity and function, and has become a tool for understanding the differentiation capacity of early hematopoietic progenitors. The advent of genetic technology has strengthened the use of mouse models for identifying critical pathways in hematopoiesis. ...

We propose a classification scheme for the instabilities that might arise in sheared complex fluids. A central role is played by the coupling between the flow and the solute concentration, which is a combination of the parameters describing (a) the tendency of solute molecules to migrate to regions of small or high shear rates and (b) the variation of the viscosity with concentration. Using a mean field approach, we show that the nature and the geometry of the instability can be predicted from the ...

The lichenicolous lifestyle originated independently three times in lichenized ancestors within Parmeliaceae, and a new generic ...

Abstract Dissemination of primary tumor cells depends on migratory and invasive attributes. Here, we identify Navigator‐3 ( NAV 3 ), a gene frequently mutated or deleted in human tumors, as a regulator of epithelial migration and invasion. Following induction by growth factors, NAV 3 localizes to the plus ends of microtubules and enhances their polarized growth. Accordingly, NAV 3 depletion trimmed microtubule growth, prolonged growth factor signaling, prevented apoptosis and enhanced random cell migration. ...

Agricultural woody residues are available in massive quantities and provide a considerable potential for energy production. However, to encourage environmentally sustainable bioenergy strategies, it is necessary to assess the environmental performance of each specific bioenergy chain. The application of LCA to bioenergy from agricultural residues requires practitioners ...

The thymus provides a unique environment for the development of T lymphocytes from bone marrow-derived progenitor cells. Several environmental factors have been identified that influence the development of T cells in the thymus. In particular, the Notch pathway has emerged as critical for the induction of T-lineage commitment and differentiation. Until recently, however, the precise nature of the thymus-derived signals that drive T-cell development were unclear, and the only reliable in vitro culture ...

The basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors HEB and E2A are critical mediators of gene regulation during lymphocyte development. We have cloned a new transcription factor, called HEBAlt, from a pro-T cell cDNA library. HEBAlt is generated by alternative transcriptional initiation and splicing from the HEB gene locus, which also encodes the previously characterized E box protein HEBCan. HEBAlt contains a unique N-terminal coding exon (the Alt domain) that replaces the first transactivation ...
