Herein we report the experimental and theoretical study of the temperature dependence of a thiacarbocyanine dye in its monomer, H- and J-aggregates states. We demonstrate the ability to control the ratio of monomer, H- and/or J-aggregates with heat. We link such a control to the conformation dependence of the molecule. An alternative way to gain access to the dominating species without changing the concentration as a complete switching mechanism between all the present species is proposed. The results ...

Puberty involves a series of morphological, physiological and behavioural changes during the last part of the juvenile period that culminates in the attainment of fertility. The activation of the pituitary‐gonadal axis by increased hypothalamic secretion of gonadotrophin‐releasing hormone (Gn RH ) is an essential step in the process. The current hypothesis postulates that a loss of transsynaptic inhibition and a rise in excitatory inputs are responsible for the activation of Gn RH release. Similarly, ...

Quantum chemical calculations were carried out to explain the observed shifts in the absorption spectrum of different azo-aromatic compounds due to changes in the dihedral angle of the azo-group. Our results reveal that the π−π∗ transition presents a hypsochromic shift and an oscillator strength drop upon increase of the dihedral angle. Nevertheless, the n−π∗ transition exhibits the opposite behavior. This effect is attributed to the reduction in the π−electron conjugation length of the molecule. ...

Worldwide, acute gastroenteritis causes substantial morbidity and mortality in children less than five years of age. In Bolivia, which has one of the lower GDPs in South America, 16% of child deaths can be attributed to diarrhea, and the costs associated with diarrhea can weigh heavily on patient families. To address this need, the study goal was to identify predictors of cost burden (diarrhea-related costs incurred as a percentage of annual income) and catastrophic cost (cost burden ≥ 1% of annual ...

Twenty generations of divergent selection for abdominal bristle number were carried out starting from a completely homozygous population of Drosophila melanogaster. All lines were selected with the same proportion (20%) but at two different numbers of selected parents of each sex (5 or 25). A significant response to selection was detected in eight lines (out of 40) and, in most cases, it could be wholly attributed to a single mutation of relatively large effect (0.5-2 phenotypic standard deviations). ...

Starting from a completely homozygous population of Drosophila melanogaster, two groups of 100 inbred lines each were established and maintained for 46 generations, by a single brother-sister mating and two double first cousin matings, respectively. Sternopleural bristle number, wing length and wing width were simultaneously scored in all lines every 4-5 generations. The means of four lines in each group departed significantly from the overall mean and, in each case, this was attributed to a single ...

The hypothesis that an effective protection of progeny chickens against inclusion body hepatitis/hydropericardium syndrome (IBH/HP) can be achieved by dual vaccination of breeders with fowl adenovirus (FAV) serotype 4 and chicken anemia virus (CAV) was tested. Recent expert reviews recommend a conservative surgical strategy – debridement and irrigation, antibiotics and implant retention (DAIR) – for most early post-surgical prosthetic joint infections (PJI). However, differences exist in published series regarding success rates with DAIR, and the size of most series is small. In this prospective multicenter cohort study of early PJI managed by DAIR, factors associated with failure of the DAIR were analyzed. Out of 139 early PJI, 117 cases managed with DAIR ...

In this paper we propose an inversion strategy for the analysis of spectropolarimetric measurements taken by {\em Hinode} in the quiet Sun. The spectropolarimeter of the Solar Optical Telescope aboard {\em Hinode} records the Stokes spectra of the \ion{Fe}{i} line pair at 630.2 nm with unprecendented angular resolution, high spectral resolution, and high sensitivity. We discuss the need to consider a {\em local} stray-light contamination to account for the effects of telescope diffraction. The strategy ...

Perfusion scintigraphy is the most frequently used method for the regional assessment of pulmonary function in candidates for pulmonary resection with borderline respiratory function. As single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) provides tomographic imaging, this ...
