Within this project, this study aimed to generate background incidence rates of 41 adverse events of special interest (AESI) to contextualize potential safety signals detected following administration of COVID-19 vaccines. A dynamic cohort study was conducted using a distributed data network of 10 healthcare databases from 7 European countries (Italy, Spain, ...

Large uncertainties still dominate the hypothesis of an abrupt large-scale shift of the Amazon forest caused by climate change [Amazonian forest dieback (AFD)] even though observational evidence shows the forest and regional climate changing. Here, we assess whether mitigation or adaptation action should be taken now, later, or not at all in light of such uncertainties. No action/later action would result in major social impacts that may influence migration to large Amazonian cities through a causal ...

Daniel Vergara Lope from Mexico and Carlos Monge Medrano from Peru were brilliant scientists in their own countries. Both scientists studied high altitude physiology and defined the physiological and anatomical mechanisms of adaptation to high elevations. The Mexican physiologist proposed his ideas 40 years before his Peruvian counterpart. This paper studies the contribution of Vergara Lope and Monge Medrano to the understanding of high altitude medicine and proposes explanations of why history has given priority to Monge, ...

The tuberculin skin test (TST) quantifies cell-mediated immunity to tuberculosis antigens. Helminths suppress cell-mediated immunity, so we studied the effect of helminth infection and deworming on the TST in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in an indigenous Amazon community ( N = 195). Stool microscopy diagnosed helminths in 98% and co-infection with multiple species in 24% of study subjects. The TST was positive (≥ 10 mm) for 49%, and responses increased with age ( P < 0.001), Bacille ...

CKD (chronic kidney disease) has become a public health problem. The therapeutic approaches have been able to reduce proteinuria, but have not been successful in limiting disease progression. In this setting, cell therapies associated with regenerative effects are attracting increasing interest. Evidence from clinical studies has proposed that children born from preeclamptic women have a higher risk of suffering neurological, psychological or behavioral alterations. However, to date, the mechanisms behind these outcomes are poorly understood. Here we speculate that the neurodevelopmental alterations in the children of preeclamptic pregnancies result from impaired angiogenesis. Abstract Distinguishing between natural forests from exotic tree plantations is essential to get an accurate picture of the world’s state of forests. Most exotic tree plantations support lower levels of biodiversity and have less potential for ecosystem services supply than natural forests, and differencing them is still a challenge using standard tools.
