ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of onion cultivars as a function of the spacing between plants. The experimental design was a complete randomized block in a 3 x 4 factorial scheme, with four replicates. The treatments were composed of the combination between three onion cultivars (Vale Ouro IPA 11, Serena and Rio das Antas) and four plant spacings (3, 6, 8 and 10 cm). The evaluated characteristics were total, marketable and unmarketable yield of bulbs, percentages ...

Background Artistic Gymnastics is a sport where athletes are frequently fatigued. One element that might influence this aspect is carbohydrate, an important energy substrate for the muscles and the CNS. Our goal was to investigate the influence of fatigue over artistic gymnastics athlete’s performance and the effects of a carbohydrate supplementation on their performance. Methods We evaluated 15 athletes divided in 2 groups (control and fatigue) from 12 to 14 years old in two different experimental ...

Abstract We evaluated the effect of temperature regimes (six constant and four alternating temperatures), light qualities (five red : far red ratios) and water potentials (ΨW; seven NaCl and polyethylene glycol 6000 [PEG] solutions) on the percentage and germination rate, as well as the post‐seminal development morphology, that allow Pilosocereus arrabidae seeds to germinate in a hot semiarid climate on the south‐eastern Brazilian coast. The results showed that seeds germinated similarly between constant ...

The archaeological dose (AD) was measured in three tooth samples of giant mammals that belonged to Brazilian megafauna using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy at X-band (nu approximately 9.5 GHz) and K-band (nu approximately 24 GHz). Samples were collected in Lagoa de Dentro, Puxinanã city in Paraiba, a northeast state in Brazil and were identified as Haplomastodon waringi (Holland) (two teeth) and one tooth sample of Xenorhinotherium bahiense (Cartele and Lessa). The average AD led to an age ...

Abstract The effects on acetylcholine release from the guinea-pig colon of the N-type calcium channel blocker ω-conotoxin GVIA (ω-conotoxin), the L-type calcium channel blocker nifedipine and the putative blocker of T-type channels, flunarizine, have been investigated. Endogenous basal acetylcholine release and electrically (1 Hz, 1 ms, 450 mA)-evoked overflow in the presence of cholinesterase inhibitor were studied. ω-Conotoxin (1–10 nM) and nifedipine (0·03–3 μm) dose-dependently inhibited basal and ...

Background and objective: Hyperinflation with a decrease in inspiratory capacity (IC) is a common presentation for both unstable and stable COPD patients. As CPAP can reduce inspiratory load, possibly secondary to a reduction in hyperinflation, this study examined whether CPAP would increase IC in stable COPD patients. Methods: Twenty‐one stable COPD patients (nine emphysema, 12 chronic bronchitis) received a trial of CPAP for 5 min at 4, 7 and 11 cmH 2 O. Fast and slow VC (SVC) were measured before ...

Microtubule-targeting agents (MTAs) remain a gold standard for the treatment of several cancer types. By interfering with microtubules dynamic, MTAs induce a mitotic arrest followed by cell death. This antimitotic activity of MTAs is dependent on the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC), which monitors the integrity of the mitotic spindle and proper chromosome attachments to microtubules in order to ensure accurate chromosome segregation and timely anaphase onset. However, the cytotoxic activity of MTAs ...

The impacts of the SAMARCO iron tailing spill along more than 650 km, between the dam and the plume of the Doce River in the Atlantic, were assessed by the determination of toxic metals. The tailing spill caused a substantial increase in suspended sediment loads (up to 33,000 mg L-1), in addition to large depositions of waste along the Doce basin. The highest estimated transport of dissolved metals was observed for Fe (58.8 μg s-1), Ba (37.9 μg s-1) and Al (25.0 μg s-1). Sediments reached the highest ...

In dry regions such as the Brazilian semiarid region, the scarcity of water resources in relation to the demand for water is one of the biggest challenges to be faced by authorities and management bodies. The maintenance of up-to-date hydrographic data, in turn, can be an instrument to support water management actions, especially in dry periods. Thus, the objective of this work is to update the hydrographic data of a sector of the Northeastern semiarid region, corresponding to Code SC.24-X-A-IV ( ...

Interactions between plants and herbivores are central in most ecosystems, but their strength is highly variable. The amount of variability within a system is thought to influence most aspects of plant-herbivore biology, from ecological stability to plant defense evolution. Our understanding of what influences variability, however, is limited by sparse data. We collected standardized surveys of herbivory for 503 plant species at 790 sites across 116° of latitude. With these data, we show that within- ...
