Background: Some studies have addressed the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in head and neck cancer in South America; however, no studies have systematically gathered prevalence and conducted a meta-analysis. Aim: This study aims to estimate the prevalence of HPV in oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas in South America. Methods: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis using the following databases: PubMed, Embase, Lilacs, Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science. Data were ...

Abstract The aim of the study was to evaluate the possible relationships between stress tolerance, training load, banal infections and salivary parameters during 4 weeks of regular training in fifteen basketball players. The Daily Analysis of Life Demands for Athletes' questionnaire (sources and symptoms of stress) and the Wisconsin Upper Respiratory Symptom Survey were used on a weekly basis. Salivary cortisol and salivary immunoglobulin A (SIgA) were collected at the beginning (before) and after ...

This study compared in vivo the performances of commercially pure titanium (cp Ti) screw dental implants either uncoated or coated with synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA) by electrophoresis. The HA coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Well-adhered carbonated-hydroxyapatite layers (4- to-8-µm-thick) were obtained. In vivo tests were carried out by insertion of both uncoated and HA-coated implants ...

Neurologic complications are being recognized as important outcomes of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Pathogenesis is varied and incompletely understood, and may include neuroinvasion, indirect post-infectious neuroinflammation, and cerebrovascular pathologies. We present a case of COVID-19-related encephalomyeloradiculitis with clinical and magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders that was associated with anti-aquaporin-4 antibodies. Our case suggests ...

The anti‐ Candida activity of essential oil from Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume, as well as its effect on the roughness and hardness of the acrylic resin used in dental prostheses, was assessed. The safety and tolerability of the test product were assessed through a phase I clinical trial involving users of removable dentures. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFC) were determined against twelve Candida strains. Acrylic resin specimens were exposed to artificial ...

Abstract This study aimed to compare the chemistry of plant volatile compounds (VCs) of the unripe and ripe fruit of Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The yield, density, qualitative and quantitative composition, chemical diversity and equitability of the samples were compared. Both essential oils had residual traces of sesquiterpenoids and are mainly composed of monoterpenes which represent 80.65% of the total compounds identified for unripe fruits oil ...

To develop and compare the predictive performance of machine-learning algorithms to estimate the risk of quality-adjusted life year (QALY) lower than or equal to 30 days (30-day QALY). Six machine-learning algorithms were applied to predict 30-day QALY for 777 patients admitted in a prospective cohort study conducted in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of two public Brazilian hospitals specialized in cancer care. The predictors were 37 characteristics collected at ICU admission. Discrimination was evaluated ...

Calcium phosphates have a wide range of pH stability, depending on their Ca/P ratio. Under physiological conditions (pH ≈7), the most stable calcium phosphate is hydroxyapatite, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2. Acidic calcium phosphates, like dicalcium phosphate, CaHPO4 (monetite) and dicalcium phosphate dihydrate, CaHPO4·2H2O (brushite), are thermodynamically unstable under pH values greater than 6–7 and undergo transformation into more stable calcium phosphates. It means that, when placed in vivo (pH ≈7), acidic calcium ...

It has been demonstrated that rat litter size affects the immune cell response, but it is not known whether the long-term effects aggravate age-related memory impairments or microglial-associated changes. To that end, we raised sedentary Wistar rats that were first suckled in small or large litters (6 or 12 pups/dam, respectively), then separated into groups of 2–3 rats from the 21st post-natal day to study end. At 4 months (young adult) or 23 months (aged), all individual rats were submitted to spatial ...

Wistar rats (n = 58) were injected subcutaneously during the lactation period with fluoxetine (5, 10, 20 or 40 mg/kg/day) and cortical spreading depression (SD) was recorded immediately after weaning (25–30 days of life). An additional group (10 mg/kg; n = 8) was SD-recorded at 60–70 days. As compared to the saline-injected (n = 24) or "ingenuous" (n = 16) controls, fluoxetine dose-dependently reduced (P < 0.05) SD-velocities in the young rats by 4, 6, 16 and 15%, respectively, and in adult rats by 13%. Abstract Objectives A novel technique based on plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) is presented to modify titanium implant surfaces. Materials and methods Initially, the implants are cleaned with argon to remove contaminants and the nanostructures are created by the bombardment of the surface with a mix of noble gases. Desired crystal structure of the titanium is obtained by the implantation of oxygen on the contaminant‐free surface with particular nanostructures. Results In this study, turned ...
