Factors associated with clinical complications of snake bite and antivenom therapy were studied in 310 hospital patients admitted with snake bite over 6 years to a tertiary referral hospital in Belo Horizonte, southeast Brazil. Overall, 17.4% had early clinical complications including tissue loss associated with abscess and necrosis, acute renal failure, shock, acute lung oedema and intracranial haemorrhage. 3% had permanent sequelae, caused by muscle contractures and amputations, chronic renal ...

Epidemiologic and clinical aspects of 310 hospitalized snakebite patients and 310 matched controls were described, over a seven years period, from an emergency hospital in Belo Horizonte, Southeast Brazil. The diagnosis was based upon clinical picture or actual snake identification. Fifty six percent of victims were bitten by the snakes of genus Bothrops, 32.0% by Crotalus, 1.0% by Lachesis and 10.0% undetermined. During the study period, stable number of cases and marked seasonal variation were ...

Nickel–titanium shape memory alloys (NiTi SMA) working in superelastic regime have been applied in several fields, such as health (medicine and dentistry) and engineering, in a static or dynamic way. The aim of this paper is to study the behavior of these smart metals when subjected to dynamic mechanical stresses (fatigue). Cyclic stress-controlled tensile tests were performed to evaluate the functional and structural superelastic fatigue properties of NiTi SMA wires. The functional parameters were ...

This study assessed the influence of temperature on gonadal tissue maturation in the mangrove oyster Crassostrea gasar in the laboratory. The oysters were held at three water temperatures (18°C, 22°C, and 26°C), and the control oysters were maintained under cultivation in the environment. Every 10 days, 10 oysters from each treatment were examined for condition index and 10 for histological analysis. In the 22°C, 26°C, and field treatments, gonadal tissue maturation was observed, with no significant ...

Although there are many continuous distributions in the literature, only a handful take advantage of the modeling power provided by trigonometric functions. To our knowledge, none of them are based on the so-called secant function, defined as the reciprocal of the cosine function. The secant function can go to large values whenever the cosine function goes to small values. The idea is to profit from this trigonometric property to modify well-known distribution tails and overall skewness features. ...

Triatomines are hematophagous arthropods that transmit Trypanosoma cruzi and Trypanosoma rangeli. Feeding behavior and pathogen transmission is known to vary between the different species, and this characteristic is directly or indirectly dependent on the bioactive molecules of the saliva that facilitate the vector–host–parasite interaction. Here, we identify, characterize and compare the sialoproteomic (from the Greek sialo: saliva) repertoire of important species of the main triatomine genera in ...

The processing of coffee beans generates large amounts of solid and liquid residues. The solid residues (pulp, husk and parchment) represent a serious environmental problem and do not have an adequate disposal mechanism. In this work, activated carbons (ACs) for adsorption of organic compounds were prepared from coffee pulp by controlled temperature at different pulp/Na2HPO4 ratios (4:1, 2:1, 5:4 and 1:1). The N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms showed ACs with high quantities of mesopores and micropores ...

In this study are proposed two different procedures for health monitoring of composite materials from the strain and the acoustic emission measurement. Two systems based on optic fibre sensors were developed based on a fibre Bragg grating and a Fabry–Pérot interferometer for strain and acoustic emission sensing. The sensors were embedded in the composite material providing real-time information about the host integrity.

Abstract The protection of intellectual property rights (IPR) has been a contentious issue for more than 20 years. Industrialized nations have moved to knowledge‐based economies, and simultaneously, trade barriers have fallen, making intellectual property (IP) vulnerable. Adding to this vulnerability are conflicting international institutional environments, belief systems, and economic realities. The debate over IPR protection has become a significant global trade issue pitting the net‐technology ...

Male breast cancer (MBC) is an uncommon disease that has been the focus of limited research. It is estimated that approximately 10% of men with breast cancer have a genetic predisposition, with BRCA2 being the most prevalent genetic mutation. Here we describe the case of MBC in a 64-year-old man who presented on physical examination a nodule in his left breast and declared to have an extensive family history of cancer. The patient was firstly diagnosed with an invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) with ...
