The aim of this study was to develop a sensitive lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for the rapid detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7, a pathogen contributor to diseases and fatalities worldwide. Au nanoparticles with high stability, uniform size, and shape were synthesized and coated with heterobifunctional PEG polymer with carboxyl groups, and they were bioconjugated to be used as label in sandwich-LFIA. Then, a silver enhancement strategy was developed as an accessible, rapid, and cost- ...

Foodborne allergies and illnesses represent a major global health concern. In particular, fish can trigger life-threatening food allergic reactions and poisoning effects, mainly caused by the ingestion of parvalbumin toxin. Additionally, preformed histamine in less-than-fresh fish serves as a toxicological alert. Consequently, the analytical assessment of parvalbumin and histamine levels in fish becomes a critical public health safety measure. The multiplex detection of both analytes has emerged ...

Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) and enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) strains are food-borne pathogens associated with acute diarrhea. Haemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) is often a complication of STEC infection. In order to examine the occurrence, serotypes, virulence and antimicrobial-resistance profiles of STEC and EPEC in wildlife, 326 faecal E. coli strains from 304 clinically healthy animals were analyzed. For this approach stx1, stx2 and eae genes, as well as accessory virulence determinants ( ...

Significance So far, no targeted therapy has been approved for KRAS mutant tumors. We report that combined genetic inactivation of CDK4 and RAF1 in advanced KRAS/p53 mutant lung tumors leads to effective tumor regression without inducing significant toxicities. In spite of this therapeutic response, CDK4/RAF1-resistant cells appeared. We have identified and pharmacologically validated two independent resistance mechanisms involving hypermethylation of tumor-suppressor genes and activation of the ...

The aim of this work was to prepare size-tuned nanovesicles using a modified ethanol injection method (EIM) by applying factorial experimental design. Stable size-tuned nanovesicles (liposomes and niosomes) with controlled sizes and high EE values for hydrophobic compounds (Sudan Red 7B and vitamin D3) were achieved. Equations that were able to predict the mean particle sizes, in the ranges of 55–156 nm for liposomes and 224–362 nm for niosomes with PDI values between 0.032 and 0.378, were obtained. ...

The prevalence of smoking in Spain is high in both men and women. The aim of our study was to evaluate the role of gender in the effectiveness of a specific smoking cessation intervention conducted in Spain. Cigarette smoking is associated with increased risk for all histologic types of lung cancer, but why the strength of this association is stronger for squamous cell carcinoma than adenocarcinoma of the lung (SQC-L, ADC-L) is not fully understood. Because nicotine and tobacco-specific nitrosamines contribute to carcinogenesis by activating nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) on lung tumors and epithelial cells, we investigated whether differential expression of nAChR subtypes in these tumors ...

Social interaction, emotional and cognitive behavioral aspects were also analyzed, and real‐time polymerase chain reaction ( PCR ) experiments were performed to study gene expression changes in the mesocorticolimbic and hypothalamus‐hypophysis‐adrenal ( HHA ) axis. Abstract Low atomicity clusters present properties dependent on the size, due to the quantum confinement, with well‐defined electronic structures and high stability. Here it is shown that Ag 5 clusters catalyze the complete oxidation of sulfur to S +6 . Ag 5 catalytic activity increases with different oxidant species in the order O 2 ≪ H 2 O 2 < OH•. Selective oxidation of thiols on the cysteine residues of glutathione and thioredoxin is the primary mechanism human cells have to maintain redox homeostasis. ...

Aim of study: The globally invasive gall wasp, Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu, 1951 (Cynipidae: Cynipini), reached Spain seven years ago and is already regarded as an important pest of chestnuts (Castanea spp.) in this country as well as worldwide. Plant responses triggered upon detection of an invading pathogen include the generation of a number of mobile signals that travel to distant tissues and determine an increased resistance in distal, uninfected tissues, a defense response known as systemic acquired resistance (SAR). The more direct means of measuring activation of SAR by a primary local infection is the quantification of pathogen multiplication in distal, systemic sites of secondary infection. However, while such assay provides a biologically ...

In order to promote sustainable fishing practices within European fishing fleets and to avoid the large waste of valuable fish biomass through the practice of fish discarding, the new reform of the common fisheries policy includes the obligation of landing all species under total allowable catch (TAC) regulations. Prevalence and molecular epidemiology studies for hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) virus are scarce in Warao Amerindians from Venezuela, where an epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) has recently been documented. To carry out a molecular epidemiology analysis of hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) virus in Warao individuals from the Delta Amacuro State of Venezuela. A total of 548 sera were tested for serological and molecular markers for HBV and HCV. The prevalence of active infection (presence ...

The age of a relatively old document is one of the pending issues to be resolved in the field of forensic documentary examination. Although nowadays there are a variety of analytical methodologies focused in the analysis of inks for dating documents, the paper analysis has attained little attention. This work aims to develop two complementary approaches for estimating the age of documents based on paper analysis employing the pyrolysis technique coupled to gas chromatography with detection by mass ...

To study the structural requirements that a cyclooligosaccharide-based nanoparticle must fulfill to be an efficient siRNA transfection vector.siRNA protection from degradation by RNAses, transfection efficiency and the thermodynamic parameters of the nanoparticle/siRNA interactions were studied on pairs of amphiphilic molecules using biochemical techniques and molecular dynamics. The lower the siRNA solvent accessible surface area in the presence of the nanoparticle, higher the protection from RNAse- ...
