The impact of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was evaluated on the functionality of jackfruit leaf protein hydrolysates. Leaf protein concentrate was obtained by ultrasound (LPCU) and conventional extractions by maceration (LPCM). LPCM and LPCU were hydrolyzed with pancreatin (180 min), and hydrolysates by maceration (HM) and ultrasound (HU) were obtained. The composition of amino acids, techno-functional (solubility, foaming, and emulsifying properties), and antioxidant properties of the hydrolysates ...

Macroalgae are promising ingredients for aquafeeds, but their recalcitrant polysaccharide structure limits their wide use. To disrupt this structure, different physical (ultra-sounds, autoclave, microwaves), chemical (acid, alkaline), and biotechnological (solid-state fermentation, SSF; SSF followed by sequential hydrolysis, SSF-SH) treatments were carried out in Ulva rigida. The chemical composition, morphological microstructure, release of reducing sugars, soluble protein, and phenolic compounds ...

Up until the recent past, zoos served limited function, primarily existing for entertainment value. Today’s zoos, however, are serving many roles, chief among them: species conservation of captive animals. The biggest zoo in Brazil, S?o Paulo Zoological Park Foundation, has among its 2000 animals and many species of wild cats. The presence of domestic cats living freely in zoos is common and can be a source of spreading disease. The aim of this study was to verify the variety and prevalence of parasites ...

A domestic cat dwelling in a dairy cattle farm with haematuria was referred for a physical examination. The examination showed no abnormalities therefore complementary exams were performed. Leukocytosis with neutrophilia, monocytosis and hyperproteinaemia were detected. The urine analysis showed a bacterial infection without ultrasound findings. Serological titers to Leptospira interrogans serovar Pomona and Autumnalis were detected. Molecular analysis demonstrated the presence of Leptospira spp. ...

Abstract Cognitive assessment in schizophrenia has traditionally used batteries that are long and complex or differ widely in their content. The Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS) has been developed to cover the main cognitive deficits of schizophrenia as well as to be easily and briefly administered, portable, sensitive and reliable. Objectives: To investigate the applicability and sensitivity of the Brazilian Version of the BACS (Brazilian-BACS). Methods: Performance of 20 stable ...

Abstract The most used mathematical models with a phenomenological basis for simulating chromatographic curves of proteins in size exclusion chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, affinity chromatography, and hydrophobic interaction chromatography are reviewed. The plate model (PM) and the general rate model (GRM) are briefly described, followed by various applications of these models to the different chromatographic strategies. Based on these examples it is concluded that the GRM is the most ...

The presence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in surface water is well known, whereas their natural occurrence in biota is much less explored. The aim of this work was to evaluate the bioaccumulation of PhACs in adult toads of the neotropical species Rhinella arenarum. Three sites were selected in Buenos Aires (Argentina): a reference site (Site 1), a site with direct discharge from a secondary wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) (Site 2) and a site 300 m downstream of the WWTP discharge (Site ...

Objective: Despite intensive campaigns initiated in the 1990s, leprosy remains endemic in Brazil. It is essential that simple and efficient methods of assessing the extent of disease-related disabilities be established so that appropriate treatment and rehabilitation can be provided to patients in order to break the disease transmission chain. Method: The socioeconomic, clinical, and physical/psychosocial disabilities of 56 new leprosy patients admitted to a referral hospital in Belo Horizonte, ...

We investigated if Pinus ponderosa plantations in Patagonia are able to produce viable mycorrhizal inocula towards adjacent grasslands, which only harbor endomycorrhizal vegetation. We hypothesized that these inocula have the potential to contribute to the establishment of naturally disseminated seedlings. Also, we determined the main fungal taxa involved in this process. Seven plantations in the onset of their reproductive phase and located in the Patagonian native forest/steppe ecotone (Argentina) ...

The present study aimed to produce thermoplastic starch films with different concentrations of thermoplastic pectin and the addition of 4% lignin microparticles as a reinforcing and active agent. The pectin improved the modulus of elasticity, and decreased the elongation at break. In addition, it improved the UV light protection to 100% at 320 nm and 95.9% at 400 nm. The incorporation of lignin microparticles improved the thermal stability of the blends made with 25% and 50% thermoplastic pectin ...

To develop biodegradable food packaging, different biopolymer blend ratios of cassava starch (S) and soy protein isolate (P) (S100, S85P15, S70P30, S55P45, S40P60, and P100) were prepared by the extrusion method and then characterized. Before their application in foods, these blends must be characterized to enable the selection of the optimum materials for different packaging applications. For this purpose, the thermal and structural properties of the blends and possible interactions between the polymers ...

Societal Impact Statement Tropical dry forests (TDF) underpin the wellbeing of millions, mostly rural populations; yet have suffered from severe clearing in Colombia, triggering cascading effects such as desertification. By engaging scientists, society, and institutions in the establishment of platforms for monitoring biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, crucial knowledge gaps will be bridged, helping to find a path toward sustainable development. Abstract Lignin is a source of phenolic compounds. It can be an excellent raw material for the production of films with whey protein isolate (WPI). The present study investigates WPI films with lignin microparticles (LMP). The structural, morphological, physical (thermal and mechanical analysis, water vapor barrier, color parameters, and transparency) properties, and the antioxidant properties were determined. The concentration of LMP were 0, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75% (w/w). Structural analysis showed the ...

Abstract: Studies have been made to explore the utilization of pea proteins in terms of edible film and coating materials. The reinforcement of biopolymer films with plant-based nanocrystals has been applied in order to improve their performance properties. The objective was to evaluate the effect of the incorporation of corn starch nanocrystals (SN) (0-15%) in pea protein isolate films. Thermal analysis showed that the addition of up to 5% starch nanocrystals increased thermal stability. A 22.3% ...

P2X3 receptors are involved with several pain conditions. Muscle pain induced by static contraction has an important socioeconomic impact. Here, we evaluated the involvement of P2X3 receptors on mechanical muscle hyperalgesia and neutrophil migration induced by static contraction in rats. Also, we evaluated whether static contraction would be able to increase muscle levels of TNF-α and IL-1β. Male Wistar rats were pretreated with the selective P2X3 receptor antagonist, A-317491, by intramuscular ...

The aim of this paper was to investigate antioxidant properties of thyme essential oil (TEO) and whey protein isolate (WPI)/cellulose nanofiber (CNF), nanobiopolymers films containing TEO (20%, 30%, and 40% w/w), applied on ground beef. The antioxidant activity of nanobiopolymers was performed by 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl activity and β-carotene. The use of subtle features as species diagnostic traits in taxa with high morphological similarity sometimes fails in discriminating intraspecific variation from interspecific differences, leading to an incorrect species delimitation. A clear assessment of species boundaries is particularly relevant in disease vector organisms in order to understand epidemiological and evolutionary processes that affect transmission capacity. Here, we assess the validity of the recently described Rhodnius taquarussuensis ( ...
