A device for the measuring of the complex permittivity in the 0.1 MHz-300 MHz range is presented. It is a resonant system on which we can easily fit the measurement cells of the laboratory used in the 1 Hz-4 GHz range. This device allows us to measure the loss angle of materials down to 0.4*10-3. After the description of the mechanical and electronic parts of the device, the authors give the calibration method used to obtain the real and imaginary components of the electric permittivity. Finally, ...

PCBs, Lindane, Pb, Zn and Cr were analysed at the outfall of a catchment served by a separate sewer system. Mean concentrations in the stormwater runoff were respectively 130 ng.1−1, 75 ng.1−1, 140 μg.1−1, 730 μg.1−1, 15 μg.1−1. The importance of atmospheric input is discussed, as well as the relative importance of runoff pollution as regards wastewater.

we have previously pointed out the existence of correlated movements for the cations in X-type zeolites. In this paper, we intend to show from the analysis of the dielectric relaxation spectra that the correlation is limited to the cations present in a microscopic sphere (cluster) of radius "δ" .The value of "δ" is found to be at least 8Å for X-type zeolites containing essentially monovalent cations. As a consequence, dielectric relaxation, if performed in a sufficiently wide frequency range, can give ...

We sought to determine whether taurine could specifically protect against coronary artery disease during an atherogenic diet and whether taurine affects the lipid profile, metabolites of methionine, and endothelial atherogenic systems. Rabbits were fed one of the following diets for 4 weeks: (1) control diet; (2) 0.5% cholesterol+1.0% methionine; or (3) 0.5% cholesterol+1.0% methionine+2.5% taurine. Endothelial function was examined, and the left main coronary artery atherosclerosis was quantified ...

This study aimed to test the feasibility of a programme of semen collection and cryopreservation in Griffon vultures. Four wild-caught individuals kept in captivity because of unrecoverable traumas were used. Semen collection attempts were made twice a week during three consecutive reproductive seasons (December - March) using the abdominal massage method. Ejaculation was successfully induced between late January and late February. Semen collection efficiency was rather low (27.9%) and it did not vary ...

Aim: We evaluated the effect of buckypaper (BP) on cancer and primary cell lines in vitro and in vivo in laboratory rats. BP is an innovative material with interesting physical/chemical properties that has possible pharmacological and prosthetic employment. Given that precautions need to be taken where carbon nanotubes are injected into human body for drug delivery, as contrast agent-carrying entities for MRI or as the material of a new prosthesis generation, we assessed the toxicity of BP carbon ...

In recent years elevated homocysteine (Hcy) levels have been widely recognized as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and a connection between hyperhomocysteinemia and lipid metabolism has been suggested to have a possible role in endothelial vascular damage as lipoprotein fractions contain higher Hcy levels in hypercholesterolemia, compared to normolipidemic individuals. However, the biochemical events underlying the interaction between Hcy and LDL are still poorly understood.Herein ...

We describe a new method for the quantification of low molecular weight thiols, as homocysteine, cysteine, cysteinylglycine, glutamylcysteine and glutathione bound to human plasma albumin. After albumin isolation and purification by SDS-PAGE, thiols were freed from protein with tri-n-butylphosphine and successively derivatized with 5-iodoacetamidofluorescein. Samples were then injected and quantified in about 18 min by CE with laser induced fluorescence detection. Precision tests indicate a good ...

Background Autosomal recessive hypercholesterolaemia (ARH) is caused by mutations in a putative adaptor protein called ARH. This recessive disorder, characterised by severe hypercholesterolaemia, xanthomatosis, and premature coronary artery disease, is rare except on the island of Sardinia, Italy. Our aim was to ascertain why ARH is more common on Sardinia than elsewhere. Methods We obtained detailed medical histories, did physical examinations, measured concentrations of lipoproteins, and harvested ...

ABSTRACT Genetic hemochromatosis is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by iron overload and a variety of clinical manifestations such as liver cirrhosis and arthropathy. It is the most common genetic disease of northern European populations. The principal gene responsible for hereditary hemochromatosis, designated HFE, is located on chromosome 6 in the HLA region. The single point mutation 845A, changing cysteine at position 282 to tyrosine (C282Y), in this gene has been identified as ...

Meniere’s disease (MD) is a chronic condition affecting the inner ear whose precise etiology is currently unknown. We propose the hypothesis that MD is a migraine-related phenomenon which may have implications for future treatment options for both diseases. The association between MD and migraine is both an epidemiological and a mechanistic one, with up to 51% of individuals with MD experiencing migraine compared to 12% in the general population. The presence of endolymphatic hydrops in those with ...

We describe a very rapid high-performance capillary electrophoresis method for the separation and quantification of reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione in red blood cells. Two procedures for sample preparation have been compared, Microcon-10 membrane filtration and acid precipitation. The separation is obtained in an uncoated capillary using a high ionic strength borate buffer at pH 7.8. The intra-assay coefficients of variation (CVs%) are 1.53 and 1.66 for GSH and GSSG, respectively. The ...

We report on the deposition of Ba 0.7 Sr 0.3 TiO 3 thin films, BST (70/30), by a sol-gel process. After deposition by spin coating, the film is annealed at 750°C, one hour in air. BST films have been deposited on (111) silicon substrates (bare and platinum coated) and on (0001) sapphire. X-Ray diffration patterns show that the films are polycristalline with perovskite structure and free of secondary phase. From SEM images, we infer that the film surface is smooth, the grain size is about 50 nm and the ...

Hereditary hemochromatosis is an HLA-linked inherited disease characterised by inappropriately high absorption of iron by the gastrointestinal mucosa. The cysteine-to-tyrosine substitution at codon 282 of the HFE encoding gene sequence is responsible for the disease, although other variants, as H63D and S65C, may modify the affinity of the protein for transferrin receptors. We have recently reported that C282Y mutation is significantly increased in very old (>90 years) Sicilian women, suggesting a ...

Abstract We describe an ultrarapid capillary electrophoresis with laser‐induced fluorescence (CE‐LIF) method for total plasma thiols measurement. Reduced thiols by 10% tri‐ n ‐butylphosphine (TBP) were derivatized in 10 min at room temperature with 5‐iodoacetamidofluorescein (5‐IAF) as fluorescent reagent. We show that CE‐LIF allows a baseline separation of total plasma cysteinylglycine, homocysteine, cysteine, and glutathione in less than 5 min when N ‐methyl‐ D ‐glucamine in run buffer was added. CE ...

Several factors can influence the analytical efficiency and rapidity of the quantitative determination of erythrocyte glutathione by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). We optimized the time, efficiency and resolution of the electrophoretic separation of reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione by studying the influence of the most important factors affecting the separation, i.e. the pH and ionic strength of the electrolyte solution, the capillary length and temperature. Best results in the ...

Human longevity may be correlated with optimal functioning of the immune system, suggesting that genetic determinants of longevity also resides in those polymorphisms for the immune system genes that regulate immune responses as histocompatibility (HLA) antigens. However, conflicting results have been obtained. Some well planned and designed association studies performed in Caucasians suggest that longevity is associated with positive selection of alleles (i.e. HLA-DR11) or haplotypes (i.e. HLA-B8, ...
