Polycyathus chaishanensis is a symbiotic caryophyllid coral described from a single population in a tidal pool off Chaishan, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Due to its rarity, P. chaishanensis was declared a critically-endangered species under the Taiwan Wildlife Protection Act. In May 2017, a P. chaishanensis colony was discovered in the intertidal area of the Datan Algal Reef, Taoyuan, Taiwan. To determine whether this is a stable population in the algal reef, a demographic census-including data on occurrence, ...

There is current interest in managing and manipulating 137Cs transfer from soil to plants. We hypothesized that N source might affect Cs uptake by plants and report experiments that confirm this. Uptake experiments using hydroponics with a variety of species in the Poaceae, Asteraceae and Caryophyllid clade grown in a variety of N regimes with excess N and then acutely exposed to Cs showed that N nutrition could affect Cs uptake rates, total amounts of Cs taken up and root:shoot ratios of Cs. Abstract. The host‐parasite interface of Caryophyllaeus laticeps has been investigated in naturally infected bream, Abramis brama (L.), chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L.), and roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), by light and electron microscopy. The fish were caught in the Ruhr‐lake near Bochum. Bream showed the highest rate of infection and also harboured the largest worms compared to the two other host species. In all three cyprinids, the worms’ scolices caused local compression of the host's intestinal epithelium. ...

In the long-standing controversy over the Centrospermae (i.e., Caryophyllales) and putatively related orders, comparative sequencing of the chloroplast gene, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase, large subunit (rbcL), shows that the Polygonales and Plumbaginales are not closely related to the Caryophyllales as has been hypothesized, nor are they related to members of the Dilleniidae. The sequence data supports the assignment of independent superorder status to the Caryophyllales and the Polygonales ...
