Castañar de Ibor (Caceres, Spain) is a low energy cave showing very high micro-environmental stability throughout the annual cycle and minimum rates of energy exchange with the atmosphere. The radon (222Rn) levels monitored inside Castañar cave reached 50,462 Bq m−3 in April 2005 and had an annual average of 32, ...

Abstract Variations of carbon dioxide and radon content of cave air are presented as key parameters to assess the outgassing and isolation processes of a subterranean atmosphere. An exhaustive monitoring in the Castañar cave determined the temporal evolution of CO 2 and 222 Rn levels over a 12‐month period, in order to characterise the mechanisms of these microclimatic processes. Concentrations of both gases show both seasonal variations and short‐term fluctuations depending on several climatic ...

In Castañar cave the surface of most of the speleothems present dissolution and corrosion features. In touristic caves, this process has usually been related to the acidification of the atmospheric moisture caused by CO2 from the breath of visitors. However, in Castañar cave the process of corrosion has been also observed in rooms that are not visited by tourists. Petrological studies were carried out in the speleothems affected by surface corrosion in Castañar cave. The results indicate that this ...

The Castanar the Ibor Cave formed by dissolution of the Precambrian dolostone beds of the Ibor Group. The cave contains a variety of calcitic and aragonitic speleothems, and also moon-milk deposits composed of huntite, dolomite and minor hydromagnesite. Both huntite and dolomite tend to form spheroidal structures. Huntite formation occurred mostly on microbial films that in part corrode the speleothems. Spherulites of dolomite could form later on by transformation of the previously formed huntite, ...
